This for me is the biggest appeal of VR. I'm really not arsed about games that are basically the same as what I've been playing since day one, but just with shinier graphics. I feel like graphically there's no longer going to be that generational leap that we've seen when moving through previous console generations, so the only other innovation can be in the way the games are experienced. VR answers that call perfectly.

The massive downside for me is the risk of motion sickness. I get car sick and can't handle sitting the wrong way on a train, so I don't think VR motion sickness is something I'll ever get properly acclimatised to, sadly :(

I'm desperate to try it though, but I'm yet to find a store that has a demo unit set up in my area.

I don't think regular motion sickness and VR motion sickness are necessarily related. I've read quite a few reports of people who experience motion sickness in real life, but are fine with motion in VR.

I was really impressed with the short time I spent using a friends PSVR, but it is out of my price range due to other financial commitments. That said I hope VR continues to grow as it is something I'd like to invest in in the future. A PS5 PSVR bundle would very tempting.

I have started to feel my stomach flip when I take a big fall in a game (ie from a viewpoint on Assassin's Creed  ) so I also think I might struggle :fp:

The nausea aspect of VR is the tech's largest hurdle and it really isn't as bad as people think before they try it and there are many ways including things like having stepped turning movement as opposed to total free movement and for those with really low tolerance teleporting to locations and then static body with just free head and hand movement.

I think you'll be much more comfortable than you expect Poser but I can completely understand why you don't want to buy into such an expensive bit of kit before being able to judge for yourself just how you react.

* Every PS4 unit sold makes a profit for Sony.
* PS4 is comfortably the best selling console of the generation.
* Third party games sell more on PS4 then any other platform - generating even more revenue from its leading marketshare and PS Plus subscriptions.
-From a business perspective Sony have hit the sweet spot and it's one they're not in a rush to give up.

Sony will declare the next-generation with the PS5 and they will only do this when market conditions dictate this, eg games look dated or PC games look noticeably better, Xbox have an alternative console.
PS4 Pro launched at the end of 2016, they won't launch another home console platform without giving a 3 year gap, 2019. So realistically expect an announcement in 2020 at the earliest.

PSVR gen 2 is not likely to launch with the PS5. Whilst Sony have repeatedly hinted at its development it wouldn't make sense to launch a premium priced peripheral before establishing a userbase. The only exception to this is if PSVR2 is so powerful, works so brilliantly and has such a brilliant killer application that it sells the PS5.

And for the VR naysayers... your concerns are all valid! But they are overcome by the experience of being transported into another world via virtual reality. VR Gen 1 is a working proof of concept but it's going to be improved and get so much better. Whether you enjoyed your first experience with it or not, VR will be a big part of the future of gaming.

Venom's post absolutely nails it.

Sony expect 2018 to be PS4's peak year in term of sales.

They won't be releasing PS5 before 2020 if that's the case.

I hope this prediction comes through to fruition, Venom - personally I am in no rush for PS5 to arrive. Although I got a PS4 at launch just over four years ago, it still feels like a pretty new console to me and I'm very happy with the games and features.

I think a 2020 announcement with a 2021 release sounds about right. The PS4 is still selling well, Sony have no need to rush a replacement out.

I'm also in no big rush for PS5/XB2. Give me another 3 years please.

I must admit my new TV has given me a fresh perspective as the jump to UHD is huge and seeing HDR in action on GT Sport, Forza 7 and Assassins Creed has been a real eye opener and feels like a generational leap anyway.
If games like Days Gone can look anywhere near as good as they do in the trailers (I know we've been here before and been disappointed but I always have hope) I think the console refreshes will be able to create some pretty awesome games in the next few years.
Maybe I can wait until Christmas 2020.
