First Look at Our Third Game: Pyre

We're incredibly excited to announce Pyre, a new party-based role-playing game we're making here at Supergiant.

About the Game: In Pyre, you lead a band of exiles through an ancient competition spread across a vast, mystical purgatory.

Pyre once again showcases our team's commitment to rich atmospheric presentation and storytelling, along with a distinctive gameplay blend that combines expressive decision-making on the world map with fast, action-packed confrontations against rival groups of exiles whose own freedom is at stake. We want to create a large cast of characters you can grow close to as you travel together across a strange and wondrous land.

The Story So Far: At the beginning of the game, your luck has almost run out when several masked wanderers find you and revive you from the brink. With your help, they seek to learn the truth about the Rites, a secretive competition through which the worthiest exiles can return home, absolved of their transgressions. As you journey across the Downside in the wanderers' custom blackwagon, you'll meet a variety of characters of all shapes and sizes, and learn what's in store for each of them should they prevail in the Rites. Your actions will determine who returns to glory, and who remains in exile to the end of their days.

Platforms and Availability: Pyre will be available in 2017. Like Transistor, it will launch simultaneously on Steam and the PlayStation 4.

I loved Bastion but the whole turn based thing in Transistor put me of until it came out on Plus. Turns out it was better than Bastion, which was a pretty basic game when it came down to it.

Will be picking this up day one.

Yup. Don't wanna bad mouth Bastion, which I played for the first time on PS4 and a while after Transistor, but compared to their second game, Bastion was indeed pretty basic.

Not the first time I've heard someone say the turn-based aspect of Transistor put them off. I thought it worked really well and got on with the game from the off.

Wasn't too sure what to think after the reveal trailer but this sold me.

Wow. Wasn't expecting it to be so sporty! Colour me intrigued. I was a *teeny* bit disappointed when their game description read team based RPG, but the gameplay puts a totally different spin on it. Looking forward to learning more about it.

They talked about it on the Bombcast this week. Gerstmann seemed impressed.

I went into this blind. Didn't keep close tabs on it and intentionally didn't read any reviews. I expected that, for me, the highlight would be my interacting with the world and its characters, and the fantasy sport element would be of secondary concern, if that. Things are turning out different and not necessarily in a positive way. The sport element is the most fun part but not in a must experience kind of way, and the interactions with all the other characters are... linear, limited and so far not in the least bit satisfying. If it carries on like this then Pyre is going to be a long way behind Bastion (which I found to be so so) never mind Transistor, a game which I consider to be one of the best of this gen. I still don't regret buying this on launch as I bought Transistor on a sale and got Bastion via PS+, so I wanted buy one of their games on day one and to pay full price for once.

I'm only an hour in but I've enjoyed every part of it. There's a lot more writing than I was expecting and considering how that's always been a strength of the studio, that's a big plus. Coupled with the stellar audiovisual presentation, it sets up a really cool world I'm eager to experience more of.

They're not linear though? I've already had several instances of making a decision and then for a character to comment or follow up on it later.

Linear in the sense that they're the only person I can interact with at that time. And even that wouldn't be all that bad but when those moments have happened they've been and gone in a flash without anything really stemming from them.

True it seems you can only talk to one at a time but that hasn't bothered me. I feel like the conversations have resulted in meaningful exchanges, in terms of learning about the greater context of the world or characters' back stories. And the prose itself is disciplined enough to convey what it needs to quickly without feeling sparse.

I had one conversation where I had multiple choices (like, 5 of them) and I started at the bottom of the list (it was with the guy who makes the effort to rescue you at the beginning) and I can't even remember what the hell he said. Had I known it would be my only pick I'd have gone with one of the more interesting looking choices  :fp: And many of the other Please join me outside conversations have been much shallower interactions than that one.
I think part of the malaise I'm feeling is because the journey just seems to be meandering along from one rite to the next, I think once *something* happens things will pick up and I'll be hooked. I hope.

That Eurogamer review is awful - the quality over there's really gone down since Tom left. Anyway, this looks pretty intriguing, shame there's no PC demo (that I can see, anyway) as it sounds like the kinda game I'd want to try before buying.

I'm highly intrigued by this too. But it'll have to wait as I've got to many games on the go at the moment.

Wah! Just lost my first match! And a final rite at that! It was intentional :P Thought I'd do Pam a favour. Though I did make it *extra hard* on myself by somehow managing to go into it with TWO active Titan Stars  :fp: Totally not a humble brag as it took me many, many attempts to beat them just once, which I then had to reset because spoiler^.

Cannot believe I'm saying this, but... it's better than Transistor!

No doubt Transistor offers more gameplay, but everything else I liked about it is present within Pyre and many times over than in Supergiant's second.
I'm still not completely done as I'm going through what happened to everyone, but the campaign is over and it was a *fantastic* experience.

Worth mentioning: some of the Rites toward the end suffer from pretty bad frame drops. No idea why as they can occur on stages you play early on in game and they're fine then. But toward the end it can get really bad. Weird.
The game was played on a practically brand new PS4 Slim.

2nd playthrough complete. I may do a third where I save nothing but adversaries. All except that one jerk.

Some of my favourite tracks:

Full OST (uploaded by Supergiant themselves )
