President Blairs!

In a recent thread we discussed how Tony Blair had said in an interview he felt he prematurely left his post as PM and would like a second crack of the whip (You can read it here). How we joked and thought it was just a off-hand comment... but the world of politics is a shrewd game. Guess what?

Meet the new Labour adviser: Tony Blair

Tony Blair is to take his most active part in the Labour party since retiring from frontline politics, contributing ideas and experience to Ed Miliband's policy review. Blair, who stepped down as prime minister five years ago, will be giving advice on the Olympic legacy and in particular how to "maximise both its economic and its sporting legacies", Miliband said last night.

The role reflects Blair's part in the successful 2005 bid to host the Games and his sporting foundation, one of the key charitable causes in his retirement. Blair will be reunited with leftwinger Jon Cruddas, a former aide, who was brought in by Miliband to head the policy review. Cruddas spoke recently of "reforming the band" – bringing together leading lights of New Labour – in support of Miliband.

The controversial move – perhaps especially within the Labour party – was announced at a fundraising event when Miliband and Blair symbolically shared a platform to make speeches. Miliband, who was more closely allied to Gordon Brown during the 13 years of Labour government, declared that Blair's help for the party marked a "coming together of the Labour tribe".

With much of his own party – and the country – still angry about the legacy of Blair's decision to take Britain into the Iraq war, and Labour's clear departure from socialism under his reign, Miliband will be aware that Blair's new role will not be universally welcomed. Last night aides played down Blair's policy position, saying it should not be "over-interpreted".

Now this is interesting because the current Labour leader Ed Miliband has to weigh up the benefits and risks with such a move. Benefits are that Blair is a charismatic leader who appeals to many of the faithful Labour party supports, risks are that Blair, because of the Iraq War, for some is a pariah. Even more risky is that what if Blair allows himself to get a little too cosy in the Labour offices. Then we might see a Labour party face-off.

This is his first step towards getting back in charge of the Labour party so he can strawberry float the country over again.

but, questionable war aside, he didn't? the problems that arose came about after he left. is he to blame for a banking collapse that happened later?

i'm not too keen but i can't see how he's to blame for that.

It's not like he could do any worse than the current lot. Hell, those strawberry floaters can't even agree amongst themselves!

Because it was the policies instated under his government that left us unable to cope when harder times hit. He had a strong economy with growth and over-spent, while the collapse may not be his fault the problems after can be partly blamed on his government.

well that's true, there wasn't enough prudence but the current gov had the same plans at the time so we were suffering from a genral delusion that things would keep growing, he wan't alone in fairness to him. Idiotic though that belief was.

Doesn't every leader 'strawberry float' the country up. Is anybody liked after their period as PM? Churchill doesn't count.

Maybe, we will never know now but I don't think the size of the spending would have been matched epecially not in terms of long-term costs. Plus we wouldn't have had Mandleson and Campbell in such prominant roles either.

The war aside things were better, the collapse wasn't his fault and any government would have done the exact same thing, the collapse made us realise we need to monitor things more, so everyone would have done the same.

If Labour doesn't win the next election then the party will quickly eject Miliband. Blair's Olympics advisory role is for a limited time. But if over the next 3 years Labour keep Blair around then 2015 would be the time to put his name forward (if not earlier). I'm not a Blair, or anybody supporter, but a British PM returning to Number 10 would be sensational and the press would love it.

Remember, the Labour party were not happy with Miliband and there was chatter about replacing him. But what with the press hacking scandal and banking problems, Cameron and the Conservative party have, PR wise, had a terrible six months allowing Miliband to go unchallenged.

Well, there are two great reasons for re-electing a certified war criminal who led this country into at least one illegal war (at unimaginable cost to human life), birthed 'The War On Terror' (newsflash: war is terror) and presided over an administration when last in power that proved itself entirely unfit for purpose; in the pocket of media moguls and criminal fat cat City bankers alike. I'll say it again: since leaving Downing Street Blair has toured the world entertaining dictators and other unsavoury types, served completely ineffectually as Official Envoy of the 'Quartet on the Middle East', had a (thankfully) unsuccesful run at getting himself elected EU President, all whilst relentlessly enriching himself. Did you know that he and his wife now own a property portfolio worth at least £14million - at the last count?

Yeah Blair - the fairweather 'socialist' - really cares about the average voter. When he's not busy caring about himself and his bank balance.
