What game should I play on the 18th of November? - Puzzle Week

You may have heard of this game before, but you most likely won't have played it in it's true form. Released on the Super Famicom in 1995. The objective of the game is to match 3 in a line be it vertical or horizontal. How this differs from other puzzlers of it's type though is you can only rotate blocks in one direction and the screen slowly moves up revealing more tiles. The main character is a fairy called Lip Stick and the game is really fun, if not hard to get lots of combos.

Super Puyo Puyo Tsuu


This is a follow up to Super Puyo Puyo, which was ported and changed in various ways to various different other franchises (Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine and Kirby's Avalanche for example). Puyo's fall from the top as usual, but there's some additional rules that were added to this release like Sosai which means you can counter garbage blocks being sent at you using chains of your own and also send them back the other way (known as Garbage Overflow). There's multiple types of garbage blocks in this release and it's known as one of the pinnacles of the series.

Umihara Kawase


Released in 1994 for the Super Famicom, Umihara Kawase follows the adventure of Kawase Umihara a schoolgirl who finds herself transported and stuck in a world full of monsters. The name is a pun based on an old Japanese idiom and it was later re-released for the Playstation and now 3DS in Japan. Using a grappling hook Kawase must traverse the levels and make it past the boss stages. It's a puzzle platformer at it's purest form.

I think I'd like to see Umihara Kawase.

With incredible timing, one of the games in the current vote - Umihara Kawase - has a feature in the latest issue of Retro Gamer magazine! I haven't read through it yet but it appears to be pretty cool.

I'm uploading the youtube video at the moment. I finished the game (although I had to use save states and it's not the best stream, I'll improve it for next week) and we recorded the podcast over the top of it all.
