What on earth can counter terrorist units do? Preventing something that requires almost no planning must be impossible.

The only thing they can do is put up more barriers to stop cars.

It's all well and good that you've got barriers protecting parliament itself, but we need things long the pavements all over major cities to prevent this. By barriers I mean more like the poles/blocks rather than walls.

Then they'll use motorbikes.

Unfortunately, it's not really feasible for them to put up barrier devices on a lot of roads. I would cost too much money as well.

In which case they can attack people on pavements in areas of the cities without the barriers. Or in smaller towns. Or at a village fete.

It just isn't feasible to stop these sort of attacks. Remember Derrick Bird? He drove around rural areas and small towns in Cumbria killing lots of people. If somebody wants to kill lots of other people, it is almost impossible to stop them unless the police or intelligence agencies get wind of it before the attack happens.

I see from Neogaf that the hate and scapegoating brigade have already started their crusade against 'moslims'.

On the other side of the coin, I have Muslims on Facebook who are promoting the idea that the murderer was trained by our government and sent on this rampage in order to distract us from 'something'.

If he passed his driving test in the UK, in a way he was "trained" by the government. It doesn't take an awful lot of training to drive a car into people.

People don't like the idea that a random nobody can just kill innocent people or shape world events. It is a lot more comforting if you tell yourself a government or some evil mastermind is behind it.
Or in this case, it is due to the fact he is Muslim (I only heard he was Asian) etc. So as long as you ship out all the Muslims, you will be safe.

The truth is of course that you will never be safe, and anyone could be that random killer. But people don't like to think that. I think it is inherit to human nature, or at least culture.
So I wouldn't say they were fuckwits, just misguided.

I'm sure you have had similar thoughts, even if you don't want to admit it "he was just depressed or mentally ill" "he was just a psychopath" "I would definitely recognize a psychopath" etc etc. No Moggy, just pray murder statistics are on your side.

For Manny that's a pretty good post.

I don’t think I have ever thought that I would recognise a psychopath as I am well aware they don’t have two heads.

In some cases though murders are caused by mental illness. I grew up with a lad who had a mental illness an ended up being murdered in a care home by a paranoid schizophrenic who thought my friend was “reading his mind and repeating his thoughts in a mocking manner”. He then got hold of a sword and killed him.

I don’t look at the above and think “the government did it!” or “it must have been part of a sinister conspiracy!”. Random gooseberry fool happens, random people die and mental illness causes horrible events to occur.

Sadiq Khan is right when he says terrorism is inevitable in large cities. People forget that before it was the muslims, it was the Irish (funny how people forget that, and even get upset when one of the chief architects dies) . And once the muslim threat disappears, another will take its place.

Aagghhhh the Scots are coming, the Scots are coming!!!

In all seriousness I don't expect Islamic terrorism to disappear in my life time.

Made the mistake of looking at the BBC News homepage today

"[Video] Woman filmed falling off bridge"

Sensitive and tactful as always. Hey you know that tragic attack that happened yesterday? Why not watch a video of one of the victims as it happened! Won't that be entertaining.

It's not news, it's not informative, it's just morbid curiosity and rubber necking. People should be above seeking out content like that and the media should be above promoting it for clicks.

It's also something that Khan said last year, not in response to this incident.

Can't believe BBC posted that video. First time I've seen anything like that from them.

Before that there was also Jewish terrorism which people conveniently forget when talking about Zionism. It was mainly directed at the British Mandate of Palestine and a lot of innocent people were killed. Also until very recently figureheads from those terrorist organisations were still very active in government and people wonder why war has always been on the agenda for Israel.

The BBC are pretty bad when it comes to breaking news coverage from what I've seen. My housemate had news 24 on last night when I got home, it was all live helicopter feeds and constant jumping on and speculating about the smallest details.

24 hour news is fine as an idea of letting people see the news whenever they have time, but the way it's done is terrible

Yeah that's the problem they are always scrabbling around to keep the viewers watching. It's all about ratings for them. What you actually want from 24 hours news is to find out what's going on at anytime.

Not sure what's happened to the BBC in the past 12 months but the website has completely fallen to bits. It's full of click-bait and scare stories now alongside the occasional link such as the above which really should not be there. It's vile. BBC has traditionally been my main source of news but have started migrating to others recently.
