Post"I’d better black me face" - VOICE OF CRICKET Geoffrey Boycott puts his foot in it
by KK » Tue Aug 22, 2017 12:02 am

The Mirror wrote:Geoffrey Boycott has been branded a “dinosaur” after saying he would stand a better chance of getting knighted if he “blacked up”.

The England cricket legend, 76, made the comment to VIP guests at the day-night Test against the West Indies.

At a Q&A session during a break in play at Edgbaston on Saturday, the BBC Test Match Special commentator said knighthoods were handed out like “confetti” to West Indies greats.

He told Sky Sports presenter Gary Newbon, hosting the session: “Mine’s been turned down twice. I’d better black me face.”

It was met by an uneasy silence at the Birmingham venue where diners, including several black guests, had paid nearly £300 each for a luxury hospitality package.

A source said: “It was a crass comment. It was intended to get a laugh but it went down like a lead balloon. People were offended.”

The source said: “Is Boycott suggesting these great West Indians got knighthoods merely because of the colour of their skin? Birmingham is celebrated for its ethnic diversity and racial tolerance.

“We can do without dinosaurs like him spouting rubbish.”

Desmond Jaddoo, an activist in the city, said Boycott’s comments were “like something from the dark ages”.

He added: “They were ill-advised and ill-conceived.

“The West Indian cricketers received knighthoods because they excelled on the cricket field.

“He should take a long, hard look at why he doesn’t have a knighthood rather than offending those who do have one.”

People always seem to make similar "errors of judgement" at these private function-type speaking events. If you want a look at what they're probably saying at home, pay for one of these do's.

Well, he's certainly not getting a knighthood now.

I dunno, apparently Theresa May is a huge fan. He was also Pro-Brexit. Maybe before May leaves she can make a few suggestions...

How the strawberry float a knight is relevant in this day and age I'll never know. Who cares.

They should send knights of the realm to the frontline of ours wars, just like the good old days.

Surely Sir Lenny Henry would be leading? After all he has the black face and that's the only type of knight we have nowadays.

What a stupid man Boycott is, I don’t know enough about him (he’s was a cricketer, beats women and is outspoken is all I know) to know if he is at all racist, but he is a complete dumbass.

Sir Lenny is busy leading our mounted cavalry against the rebellious natives down in Rhodesia.

I think you can guarantee that pretty much anyone who is white, British and over seventy is at least a little bit racist.

As opposed to those under 70 who you can pretty much guarantee are at least a little bit ageist?

I don't like Boycott, he has always come across as an odious man but seems to get away with it as he played a gentleman's game and has a quaint accent.

BBC should have put him out to pasture years ago.

I think he's widely regarded as "the voice of cricket" (I know him more from playing Brian Lara on the PS1) which is why he's still around, though "Blowers" Henry Blofeld could happily replace him. I mean everyone sits there thinking the sound of someone's voice on commentary is irreplaceable (John Motson, Barry Davies, Andy Gray...) but after a while someone always comes along and takes their place.

Luckily cricket is boring as strawberry float and so I've never had the pleasure of enjoying his commentary.

Hardly, he does a bit of colour commentary for TMS and Channel 5, he's certainly not the voice of cricket, and Blowers is retiring anyway

He's a bit like Aliss for the golf. From a different time in their sport where celebrities were allowed to be racist. Or prey on children.
