For all the bad there were still plenty of decent folk there.

If this really is it for Gaf I can't honestly see another single site gaining that sort of membership and presence in the gaming industry ever again. If it doesn't come back soon the community is going to end up too fractured to come back together the way it was.

Considering it's just a forum it seems to have very little tolerance for anyone unless they followed an arcane and arbitrary set of rules.

I prefer how we do it which is pretty much "be nice and try not to call each other banana splits" with only obviously antisocial stuff like racism being banworthy. Why did people stay on a site where a ban is never more than an unguarded comment away?

Regarding the damage to Neogaf from this incident, we suffered irrecoverable member haemorrhage when we were DDOS'd for a few days, myself personally fighting the LOIC with just a firewall. There's no way GAF isn't going to suffer from a few days outrage alongside a scandal like this.

I presume he's speaking to his lawyer on what he can and can't say. If he admits to it then that's practically a guaranteed payday for her if she wants one. And then others could come forward. He'll be living out of a cardboard box.

His best option would be to say nothing on the matter and sell it. But as a brand name I think it's Jimmy Savilled personally. And who would want to be seen giving him money. It's now birthed a nonce and an alleged sex pest, is sans a mod team (though depending on who purchased it that could be done in-house), and has a user base now widely regarded as a bit...off (ala 4ch*n).

If he stubbornly wants to keep it open though it's going to be a constant battle trying to suppress the sheer hatred people have for him. It can no longer function as it once did. It's impossible.

Can anyone explain why gaf was such a big deal? I appreciate it rose from the ashes of some other forum, but so did we.

I understand it was the biggest gaming forum on the internet, but I'm curious as to why and how this came to be.

My understanding was that gaf was a "Phoenix" forum, started when another forum closed, run privately by an individual.
If I'm right - it's not dissimilar to GR.

So why and how are they the biggest on the internet and we're relatively niche, considering our place is... well, just plain nicer?
