I personally think they have a point, but they do (as does a lot of the PC world) come across as very harsh and not really very willing to explain their point. Also I get the impression that a lot of people in those groups, don't really seem to understand the arguments they're trying to put across.

Obviously some of those posts are way overboard -- I particularly liked the person who took the excuse to get really angry about "public urination" (the most serious of crimes, hang them!), and moreover seems to think it's something only men do (just an anecdote but the most prolific alley-pisser in my group of mates at Uni was a girl...).

And yeah, I agree, it's a just dumb t-shirt, who cares?

But...

I can see their point that society accepting boys "will be" badly behaved and young men "will be" dickheads, as if that's something intrinsic to being a boy, is pretty crappy. I remember a teacher literally telling my parents "boys will be boys" when I was being bullied at school, and I have heard "boys will be boys" or variations on that used to excuse or explain away other things I thought were pretty bad, like fighting in bars or smashing up restaurants or getting gropey in clubs or whatever.

So I would agree that they have a point about the phrase and the idea it puts forward. I don't think it's society's biggest problem but I think we could do without it, I might even live up to my stereotype as a joyless SJW (I should just go ahead and own it at this point, right?) and describe it as... (dramatic background music) p r o b l e m a t i c.

I can get the point that it shouldn't be a phrase that's applied to adults. But this was a shirt aimed at 6 year olds.

Maybe they should change it to "I'm a little gooseberry fool head because mommy doesn't care" to make it more accurate?

The controversy of "boys will be boys" came up as a discussion at work a while back and I found it hard to engage with the conversation at first because as some others have said in my experience the phrase was only ever used for minor/innocent scenarios, e.g. young boys being too full of energy and doing stupid, but not malicious or aggressive things. I've never experienced it being used as an excuse to wave away either young boys or adult men being dicks.

However as that is obviously how the phrase has come to be commonly used then I don't have a problem with people challenges its use in this case.

A secretary from another company that I dated back in the day for a bit constantly got felt up and patted on the ass at work do's, even about the office and she honestly didn't mind at all. I never got too serious with her so it didn't bother me either but yeah, 50-60 year old fat men would feel her up all the time and she laughed it off as 'boys will be boys' and told me stories all the time to me about "Mr X was very 'handsy' with me this morning, horny old bastard". She enjoyed all the attention though and she didn't change my view that being like that towards women is abhorrent

Absolutely that kind of behaviour is abhorrent, no two ways about it. It's just personally I have had no experience of the phrase "boys will be boys" being used to describe or excuse that kind of behaviour which is why initially there was a disconnect in my head around the issue.

My experience of that phrase was for example if I had been fighting with my brother when we were both young, or if climbing a tree I had fallen and hurt myself - in those instances my parents or some other adult would have exclaimed "boys will be boys!"

Like I say it's obvious that the phrase has a much broader and more troubling usage beyond my own experience so I totally get why there is an issue with it!

One of my old colleagues used to long for the days when she'd be felt up by male colleagues. She said she enjoyed it and loved the attention. Was quite bizarre.

Anyway, I associate 'boys will be boys' with boys playing and getting muddy, grazed knees, etc. Can't say I've heard it used to excuse rape...I feel like if that's happened it would be a very rare occurrence. For a t-shirt that's clearly aimed at children, and clearly pertaining to the idea of little boys messing around and being boisterous, seems heavy-handed to ban it. Not all that surprising though, sadly.

I know it's really a Cameron reference but I couldn't resist bringing Theresa in to the mix. :P

It’s not a Cameron or May reference, it’s a reference to a fictional PM in a TV show.

Fair do's, I thought it was a pig-gate reference!

Cameron willingly but his private member in a swine so it's not rape, allegedly.
