On the new design, just wow, so many critical mistakes
The browsing experience on desktop is particularly sleek as buttons vanish and reappear when you mouse over them.
Yeah congratulations, that is a cardinal sin of usability.
This is why people who design things to be pretty and supposedly volunteer to do these things because they "love you" aren't or shouldn't be working in the field. These guys are so far up their own arse.
This also suggests once again that nerds just can't work with colour, ever. Some people especially programmers seem incapable of selecting any colour apart from black or grey that is pleasing to the eyes.
You might notice that there are no gradients in our design because they are, well, old and serve no purpose other than a cheap graphical effect. There are still random instances of gradients with dark pixel borders around elements in their site that hark back to software from 10+ years ago, I don't get why not focus in cohesion and basic issues like colour before completely reskinning the site with useless features like disappearing buttons.
They seem to have stripped away as much information and functionality as possible to make it a spotty collection of nebulous icons and empty grey space. So much grey and that one purple. Not great.
Edit: this is so over engineered and fixing problems that don't exist I have to stop reading that thread, removing breadcrumbs that are "crude", sure, but they've existed for some 30 years and are an established way to traverse hierarchies and help search engines understand them at the same time. But sure lets nix those entirely to save one line of text on a page.
Why not just reformat the entire page to a list of avatars and one giant article with no other elements, and when you move your mouse all the other navigation fades into place! It'll be just like reading a book! You'd never know you're on a video games forum, you're just reading some dialogue from your favourite fan fic! If you want to comment simply start typing followed by hitting the enter key and you'll automagically be blended into to the text. To get the strawberry float out of this gooseberry fool, simply hit Esc.
The best interface is no interface at all.
