Here's some site news.

Moderation
NeoGAF moderation has been restructured from the ground up. Moderators will now have a more active, transparent presence in guiding discussions, and will no longer be high profile "personalities" from the community. Moderators will just moderate; personal agendas, inappropriate biases, and egos will be left at the door.

Off-Topic
The Off-Topic thread archive will be restored this week, since internet petitions are always super effective.

Instead of restricting the discussion of controversial issues or divisive politics in Off-Topic, we're just going to be insisting extra firmly that you get along with each other no matter the subject, and we'll be more proactive to that end. We won't be tolerating self-righteous screaming matches or hostile, polarized sensationalism disproportionately centered around US politics. Relax and get along, and act as you would in a diverse social setting face-to-face in real life (...pretend you're well-adjusted).

Platform Update
We've been working on migration to a more modern forum platform throughout the year, and while we won't quite be hitting that Q1 2017 target as originally announced, we expect to go live with it this month. Look for HTTPS, improved search, updated design, additional account registration/approval pathways, and many general quality of life improvements.

They seem to be totally ignoring any of the real issues that are destroying their site.

The community has moved, he's too late with these changes.

He sat on making any changes and enjoyed the monies for years, these u-turns just look desperate.

Clearly gotten to over the large amount of users lost, so making it quicker and easier to get new members :lol:

He's been lazy and arrogant as admin and left GAF to basically run itself over the years while enjoying the cash and occasionally popping on to be a dick to members, and only now that the community has had enough and largely moved on, his desperation is making him actually bother to do something. SAD!

... I thought I was bad. How archaic is GAF? I've never really paid attention to its features. I can't really get my head around the difference between the community and forum tabs either. I guess one does allow megathreads whereas the other does not. Which is good I guess as I thought GAF was anti megathread.

People have been asking for Tweet embedding for ages as well. The response was always "Just screenshot it"

It's literally a strawberry floating off-site javascript, is it because vBulletin or Invision or whatever they're on make it difficult to create codes? I don't believe that.

There are major changes and layout things and projects that have never gotten of the ground here largely due to people stepping in and out of passion projects and joint availability / organisation on things (myself especially) but I had no idea the largest gaming forum on the Internet (for now) had such trouble implementing basic requests like that. Especially considering you could easily pay virtually anyone to implement it in a few hours or even minutes if the backend is there.

Literally the only meaningful thing there they've added since I got my account approved in 2009 was adding the spoiler tags. They've removed stuff like "who quoted me" because apparently it was too much of a load on their servers, and banned animated avatars for the same reason. The forum has I think had one redesign since then to make it more "modern". Any time someone asks about various forms of media embedding it was always met with some snarky reply. Evilore literally didn't give a strawberry float.

Pretty sure it uses vBulletin.

Yeah I recognise the editor. I've always liked how phpBB has shied away from using rich text, because it's buggy as strawberry float and slows gooseberry fool down - it's nice when implemented well, but it's REALLY hard to have them work well cross-browser and requires regular maintenance and updates as standards change. Not even gooseberry fool like Gmail works all the time. Just use standard elements, nice CSS and let the OS/browser / parser (PHP) do the formatting work. If you can't figure out BBCode you probably shouldn't be on a forum [/elitism]. It also tends to generate insane HTML that craps out a page with redundant code everywhere.

Anyways, that's pretty dire. I can understand bandwidth problems from "video GIFs" (which are a big problem, so we have webm here to the extent it can be supported) as avatars but simple ones like mine are literally 10KB. Load of crap, just doesn't want to pay for that much more bandwidth - no reason why not to restrict avatar size to a few KB to avoid that.

I sometimes get the impression GAF is like, 1. leave big ass forum 2. install vBulletin 3. *absorb gigantic ego complex*

It's just not what it's about. I'm playing close attention to its demise because it's becoming textbook for how to strawberry float this stuff up.

We've had embeds (and spoiler tags) since launching in 2008. Almost a decade ago now!

Did Gamesradar not have any for some reason?

It was pretty young then it started in 05.

I thought we didn't get YouTube embedding until after 2010. I'm sure I remember it being announced as a new thing well after I joined.
Or was that just the [YouTube] Switch?

We had at least YouTube, GameTrailers and GameVideos embedding (yep, using BBCode) in 2008 because I can still see where I tested them in the early days of the staff room :wub:

The code behind YouTube embedding changed a couple of items since then too I believe.

I feel the lack of XHamster embedding has really hampered our success.
