Post"Renowned" Travel Guide names Scotland as Most Beautiful Country In The World

Evening Standard wrote:Scotland has been voted the most beautiful country in the world by a renowned travel guide.

A poll conducted by the Rough Guide found readers believe Scotland to be “the most beautiful country in the world”, beating Canada to the number one spot.

The guide concluded the “wild beaches, deep lochs and craggy castles” of the Scottish highlands were among the world’s most beautiful spectacles.

England was voted the seventh most beautiful place, while Wales placed tenth in the rankings.

Malcolm Roughead, chief executive of VisitScotland, said the title would attract more visitors to Scotland.

He said: "We are delighted that Scotland has received this remarkable accolade from Rough Guide readers, but of course it will not be a surprise to anyone who has encountered our wonderful country.

"From our awe-inspiring landscapes to our remarkable historic attractions, to our bustling but beautiful urban centres, Scotland takes people's breaths away.”

The UK countries beat off stiff competition from picturesque tourist favourites such as Switzerland Norway and Vietnam, which all placed in the Top 20.

Finishing the list, Rough Guide said: “And finally, the world’s most beautiful country is revealed: Scotland.

“Who can deny that these wild beaches, deep lochs and craggy castles are some of the most wonderful and beautiful sights in the world?”

Scotland has some outstandingly beautiful scenery so it doesn’t seem that out of place on the list. The state of the locals should have disqualified it though. :shifty:

I feel like the only thing wrong with that list is that Norway should replace, maybe, South Africa. I don't know much of South Africa though so perhaps not. Norway is too far down the list though, no question of that.

It's certainly up there by my tastes, but you'd think places like China and the USA would win out purely from their size and variation.

American and Chinese tourists seem to love visiting Scotland. When I'm up in Edinburgh I hear American and Chinese accents more than Scottish half the time.

Scotland would be the best place ever if the weather was better and the central belt wasn't so gooseberry fool. I love Glasgow, I would live here over any other city in the UK, but there's so much that brings the rest of the area down. Crap towns, gooseberry fool industrial wastelands, scum. And street after street of ugly, ugly people. I've always thought so, but after being in Italy in the summer it was such a stark contrast when I returned.

The north of Scotland is so bloody great. Looks amazing, hardly any people. I would love to live there when I'm older if I get the chance. Just a bit of terraforming to stop it raining so much and it'd be perfect.

Anyone who thinks this probably hasn't been outside of the big cities for a meaningful amount of time. Edinburgh is genuinely beautiful in places and having a castle smack bang in the middle of the city above everything else, but there's so much countryside to see. (Glasgow is a dreary place full of dreadful accents)

Glen Coe and the Isle of Skye. My sister got married at Eilean Donan Castle on Skye a few years ago

Tons of places around the island to go and see, like the Old Man or Storr (the start of Prometheus was filmed around here)

The island is pretty small so it's a great place to go for a long weekend and you'll have time to see pretty much everything you want.

Feels like home.

Seriously though, there are some shitholes (As there are in every country in the world), but once you get out of the towns and cities it really is astonishingly beautiful in places. I don't even mind the rain, but then I've always lived here so I'm used to it.

I don't think Scotland's the most beautiful nation in the world but when you take into account how crammed in so many beautiful sites are, it's definitely up there.
