I use the same type as in my car in real life, automatic transmission. Lets me focus more on the course, how about you?

For 25 years or so I'd always used auto, but when I started playing Race Pro manual felt like the right choice, and came very naturally. Shame the game turned out to be an agonising slog that I couldn't be bothered with.

Not sure what I'll choose next time a new racer comes along.

Manual using in-car cam on hardest difficulty.

Manual. I like to have full control of my vehicle, and I like to use the ratios and revs to my advantage.

Automatic for games but I wouldn't be seen dead driving anything other than a manual. Automatics are for banana splits and Yanks.

Auto, I'm too lazy to choose manual.

Auto most of the time...the only time I'll ever even try manual is in a game like Race Pro and even then I'm likely to switch back to auto for a lot of the time.

Manual if it's offline normally. I usually end up in an Auto when playing online, as you get people knocking you off the track and I get fed up of changing down to first all the time.

If it's something like Burnout, then Auto. Assuming you even get the option on those types of arcadey games.

Auto, but it would definitely be manual if I had an expensive force-feedback steering wheel with a proper gearstick.

It's hard enough not being able to feel when to change gears without having to mentally translate gear numbers to "UP" and "DOWN" commands on top of that.

Usually auto, but manual if I'm really into the game and trying to eek out more performance.

Manual all the time unless it is a pure arcade racer like Burnout or something.

Manual gives a greater control of the car.

Lazy yanks.

With sim racers I always go manual. Think about it, you're racing, say, a Ferrari around Silverstone, with realism pretty high on your agenda. Why would you choose automatic? You'd never do that in a million years if you were doing it for real, would you?

With arcade racers I normally go with automatic. Lets me concentrate on powerslides 'n' all that gooseberry fool.

I always get faster times with a manual gearbox. I find autos are too conservative with when they change up.

This, actually.

And this. Manual also immerses you in the game so much more. In auto, all you have to do on the straights is hold accelerate. So uninvolving.
