Daily Mail wrote:This is the moment a group of tram passengers unite to confront a man said to have been abusing a Spanish couple.Witnesses said the man had told the couple to 'speak English' and 'go back to their own country' before he was challenged by members of the public.
One of the passengers outraged by the man's comments to the couple tells him: 'It is unacceptable in this country and this day and age.'
The footage, which emerged yesterday, was filmed on a tram in Manchester by a man not seen in the film.
He said of the incident: 'The couple were speaking Spanish and this guy was saying "speak English".
PEAK, TOP-TIER RACIST.'They said they would speak in whatever language they wanted and so he said "go back to your own country". It was disgusting. He was being very abusive.
'But the reaction from the people on the tram was amazing, for them to stand up to him and tell him it was not on.'
In the footage, a man is heard confronting the abusive passenger, saying: 'Who cares if they are talking in a foreign language?'
Reverting to English, the Spanish couple discourage the member of the public from trying to protect them, saying: 'Don't waste your time.'
The man said to have been abusing the couple then turns his anger on the member of the public who was confronting him, aggressively asking: 'Are you English? Are you gay?'
Another member of the public then steps in and tells the man: 'Mate, I'm going to back him up as well. If you're being racist I'm going to call the police.
'It is unacceptable in this country and this day and age. I think everyone else on this tram would agree. It is not on.'
The second member of the public then apologises to the couple, who are by then speaking English, adding: 'He's in an absolute minority.'
The abusive man then becomes quiet, muttering: 'Alright, fair enough.'
The passenger who filmed the incident said he wanted to share the footage to show how the group stood up to the man.
He added: 'You would only get a reaction like that in England, in fact I was speaking to the Spanish guy that had been attacked and he said that to me.
'He said that no one would have bothered to help someone in that way other than in Britain.
'As soon as he was challenged the guy just shut up and didn't say anything else. Hopefully he will think twice about being like that in the future - and know that people in Manchester won't put up with it.'
