All cool, Taf.

As I posted earlier, I probably made a mistake in picking this moment to highlight my dislike of the term "gammon" as it's an understandably contentious subject. It had been mildly bugging me for a little while but this wasn't a great thread in which to bring that concern to the fore.

I guess we're all in agreement about the plane guy's despicable behaviour, even if we're not all quite in such a high state of harmony about naming conventions.

Personally I'd just call an arsehole an arsehole regardless of there race, religion, or affiliation to any sub group.

People might say something like Gammon only refers to a certain type of white dude but loads of people drop the big N word around my friend and then when he gets annoyed try to back peddle and say the N word is not about all Black people only the lazy low educated rap loving ones so they don't mean him, thinking that's somehow going to make it ok and make him not pissed off.

I know Gammon might not have the historical conations but no word is born with that is it.... Better just to kill the word and call a racist asshole a racist asshole.

Chav isn't racist, but it is classist.

Is it? I've known a fair few right middle class chavs.

What made them chavs, though? While it became an trendy lifestyle choice in some circles, all the trappings of the chav stereotype are rooted in pictures of a certain working class/poor lifestyle that's generally intended to demean people from those backgrounds. Also, chav's an easy way to do down anyone from a working class background, that presumably your middle class chav mates could avoid, having a chavvy accent, coming from a chavvy area, etc.

Chav is, of course, along with "hoodie", "scally" or "ned", reductive shorthand for an oft-imagined adolescent, usually from an estate, who, in addition to sportswear, likes weed, benefit fraud, FIFA and intimidation. It's a word that does nothing to help the problems that the myth might have grown out of – problems of underemployment and antisocial behaviour.

Owen Jones's publishing sensation Chavs: The Demonization of the Working Class popularised the view that the word was no longer viable for usage, describing the phenomenon as a "flagrant triumphalism of the rich who, no longer challenged by those below them, instead point and laugh at them".

Are we sure Jawa hasn't just misread all this as "Ganon" and he's just feeling bitter about 20 years stuck in Hyruke Field?

Haven't watched the video but don't other passengers step in and tell the guy to STFU?

One guy intervenes while most people sit on their hands. One of the cabin crew then comes over and moves her. It's a bit awful really.

I’ve only just watched the Ryanair video. All it needed at the end was a massive black bloke to appear and sit down next to him.

I don't really care enough about this to properly argue over it but that Vice article's pretty weak - I'd say hipster's generally used as a derogatory term nowadays too, and it seems to suggest their described chav is only an imagined construct when plenty of areas have those types of folk.

Its similar to gammon in that no one's going to use chav to describe all working class people.

Chav to me = trackies, gold chain, bifter outside the school gate, harassing passers by.

For gammon, substitute racist old prick. For chav, substitute piece of gooseberry fool. Same same

I'd view it like calling a fat person coming down the street with a KFC MegaFamily bucket in one hand (with face stuffed in like a portable trough) and a 2L Bottle of Ultra Sugar Mountain Dew in the other they swig from "tubby" to your mate.

It's not about all fat people. It's not even about majority. It's a judgement based on how one person in front of you is acting.

And then Jawa comes along and tells you "Stop that. This is just like what happened to the Jews!" (Sorry Jawa. I know you don't mean it like that now - but I couldn't resist :P)

I'd actually argue Chav (and Pikey? That's different right?) is more offensive than Gammon by some degree :slol:

No idea. I just wait for the sugarist drink I could think of (that comes in 2L bottles) and Ultraised it.

You could always just stir 5 tablespoons of sugar in a normal bottle if you want.

One large person with a KFC is comparable to a racist on a plane calling an old lady a “black bastard”?

Oh mate.
