Officially announced three years ago, but this is the first info blowout.

Brief write-up on 1UP http://www.1up.com/news/square-confirms ... est-online

Summary stolen from GAF
- First internally developed DQ game at Square Enix
- Produced by Yosuke Saito (NIER) and directed by Jin Fujisawa (DQ8, DQ9)
- Online RPG for Wii and WiiU
- The Wii version will be released in 2012 in Japan, no date for WiiU version
- The WiiU version will have much better graphics, but the world will be the same
- The opening movie is by Square Visual Works

- The game takes place in a world with 5 continents, and 5 different races/tribes living in them
- Massive world and story that builds on the foundations of DQ9's ideas
- Visible equipment
- For those who play alone there will be NPCs who can be recruited into the party and driven by AI
- There are battle transitions, and the combat commands at menu based, but the player only controls his/her character

- The Wii game supports Wiimote+Nunchuck, Classic Controller, Classic Controller Pro, as well as USB Keyboards
- The Wii game will use both the game disc as well as USB memory storage
- There could be a feature where characters can be transferred onto the 3DS and shared with other players using Streetpass

Sounds like it's expanding on the MMO inspirations from DQIX and has become an MMO-lite. Dated for 2012 in Japan, if the Wii U version comes out at the console's launch then that's pretty huge given that it's the biggest RPG series in Japan. Won't be shocked if we don't see it over here till 2013.

Really excited about this. Hopefully they'll ditch any subs in the west like they did with Monster Hunter Tri.

I doubt they'll localise the Wii version to be honest.

Actually a little bit exciting. A full online RPG for both the Wiis. It might even be that it comes on one disc that is compatible for both consoles. Makes you wonder why the original Wii never had a big online game like this before. I hope this doesn't allude to a future where we will see games for the Wii U that are just Wii games with HD graphics.

I'll get it as long as there isn't a monthly fee.

I don't think Dragon Quest is big enough to gain a subscription fee in the west.

Why would they put it on Wii U but not 360 and PS3?

Seems odd to me.

Seems daft to release a huge game for just the Wii at this stage in it's lifetime (I'd be surprised if the Wii version is released outside of Japan, and if it is it'll be in limited quantities) and there was no chance of a PS3/360 release since Nintendo have this locked down as an exclusive, just like with IX.

After squares last attempt at an MMO I'm keeping my eye on this one. I wonder if they'll do better this time.

I don't think it'll be an MMO like FF XI or XIV, just more like DQIX but with proper online co-op and more expansive DLC. It would be cool if you see groups of other people wandering around like Demon's Soul's white phantoms, but actual people.

Some of the meltdowns on GAF over this are hilarious, though.

1. Dragon Quest X launches in Japan, on Wii.
2. NoE start to casually localise the title on their lunch breaks.
3. Wii U launches
4. Dragon Quest X Wii U launches in Japan.
5. Due to clever planning, NoE are able to launch the Wii U version simultaneously.
6. ???
7. PROFIT!

Although, and I completely understand why they're doing it from a business perspective, the fact the Wii U could already be out before the Wii version even launches means that the Wii version is really just going to hold the Wii U version back.

During today's Dragon Quest X press conference, producer Yousuke Saito said that the game can be played 100% on your own, meaning you don't necessarily have to play with others. However, this doesn't appear to mean that the game can be played without going online.

Square Enix addressed the issue of the game's online system at its support page today. In a brief response to the question "Is it not possible to play without an internet connection," the support page says "It's possible to play offline for the first few hours after the start of the game. However, to play all elements of the game, an internet connection is required."

Precise details of the game's online and story components have yet to be shared, so we're going to have to wait for further clarification.

During the presentation, Saito and series creator Yuji Horii took the effort to assure fans that the game's online system will not be difficult to use, saying that you can easily log out, the commands are all familiar to past DQ games, and, as mentioned above, you can enjoy yourself fully without playing with others. They also mentioned that the game will have a huge story.

At today's Dragon Quest X unveiling press conference, Square Enix revealed the long awaited next numbered entry in the long running franchise to be an online RPG (the term "MMORPG" was never used, but it may apply). So how's Joe Japan Gamer reacting?

It's difficult to judge general reaction based off the ramblings of message board posters, so we're going to wait until someone like Famitsu attempts a more scientific survey of gamers. One game creator has made his opinion very clear, though.

Masahiro Sakurai, president of Sora and chief creative force behind Smash Bros., was asked for a statement by his followers on Twitter.

He responded: "After hearing that it's online, the number of people who say the classic style Dragon Quest would be better is probably not low. However, in a game industry where evolution and sudden changes are tolerated, even considered expected, just treading the same path would be be troubling. It's being made by people who've made sound titles in the past, so I'm greatly looking forward to it."

Looks like it'll be traditional dragon quest with online elements. Sounds good.

Since this was announced Sony's shares have fallen. o_O

Also, they're making a NES/Famicon version of the game too, no Idea how that would work.

Did they somehow miss the news years ago that it was a Wii exclusive?
