PostRAM upgrade
by Turok » Sat Jan 16, 2010 4:53 pm

I'm looking to put more RAM in a computer (I want to upgrade it to 1GB from 512MB), but I'm pretty clueless with compatibility and stuff.

Keep in mind it's a pretty old computer (from around 2003)

On the RAM cartridge that is currently installed are the following data:

Make: NANYA
Characteristics: 512MB, 1rx8.
Other stuff: PC2 - 3200U - 333 - 10 - A1
Slot on motherboard is DDR2 - 667

So what should I do? First of all, is it better to get another 512MB card or directly a single 1GB one? And then, what else do I look out for, which are the important numbers? Will a PC2 - 6400u work?

It sounds like this is the type of memory that you already have, but your motherboard will accept this memory which is slightly faster.

If it was me I'd probably just buy an extra 1GB stick of the 667MHz RAM making it 1.5GB total. It's probably not the best solution and I'm sure someone here will say it is wrong to mix different RAMs like that, but I don't think it matters too much and if there are problems then you can just take the 512MB stick out and still have 1GB.

I tend to use Crucial when it comes to memory decisions. Their system scanner thingy makes life a lot easier.

I have 1GB of 800Mhz of Corsair DDR2 memory you could have for super cheap if you want.

Would that work in his motherboard?

I think it wouldn't work, Smurphy, but thanks anyhow. :) My motherboard says DDR2-667, which I suppose means it won't take anything with a higher speed than that (so no 800Mhz).

I'm gonna get a DDR2 667Mhz one tomorrow. Only thing is, it's a PC2-5300. Would that still work, considering the original one I have is PC2-3200u?

All DDR2-400 RAM will be PC2-3200 (3200MB/s transfer rate), and DDR2-667 is PC2-5300 (5300MB/s).

So basically don't worry about it, it's just another name for the different memory speeds.
