I have to be quite honest here, this game has pretty much ruined my nostalgia for the older titles! A lot of these NES and Speccy titles have aged really badly. Hilariously, I find Jetpac (the oldest game on the collection) to be more playable than the later ones like Solar Jetman, RC Pro AM and Battletoads. I just don't enjoy those games anymore, and it actually saddens me.

Still a great collection despite that. Some of the later titles are well worth the time. My favourites are Banjo Kazooie, Viva Pinata Trouble in Paradise (I love this game) and Perfect Dark.

To preface this comment, I haven't actually played this yet and I didn't play these older games originally which might account for my take on them.

They are just not that good.

I played games in this era but for whatever reason (I was on C64/Amiga) I never played any of the older Rare games, I was watching the Gametrailers video reviews of them and they just looked like bad games, not bad games for now, just bad games. There are games from that era that stand up and games that don't, my thought on this is that the ones that do stand up were always great games, the ones that don't just fooled you into thinking they were when they were actually bad. These Rare games don't look like they stand up very well to me.

I have to agree with this in a lot of instances.

In hindsight, I believe Rare always seemed to have great visions for their games, but the tech for their visions wasn't there yet. A lot of their stuff has aged badly as a result (shite framerates being my number one complaint).

They are pretty much like every developer to me. Some great games, some absolute stinkers.

Each to their own, but I'm having a ton of fun with this package. Sure, it has a lot to do with nostalgia, and there are some games that I'm not fussed with, but I spent 1.5 hrs the other day on Knight Lore and same again on Solar Jetman both of which are terrific fun today. Then another hour spent on Gunfright - again great fun. For 17.50 that I paid, it's incredible value and a lot of love and attention has been put into the whole package with the extra challenge modes and whatnot.

The rest of the family are having loads of fun on Viva Piñata too.

I reckon there is something for everyone on there.

I tried Knight Lore etc and especially Gunfright, but I have no nostalgia for them at all, being before my time. What are you supposed to do in Gunfright? You just wander around and die whenever you touch anyone. I'm not too fussed about it as there is a lot of decent stuff in there - as has been said, the oldest game is one of the most immediate and approachable.

With Gunfright, you are the sherif hunting down the "Wanted" characters. You'll see as you walk around that there are little Mexican (?) men hopping up and down pointing. Follow the general direction they are pointing and they'll guide you. The person you are hunting down is bigger than the other characters so you won't miss them. Once you've found them there is a quick shoot out. You'll need to use the rewind facility (left shoulder button) to do this as its not as its pretty hard.

In general the rewind feature makes a lot of these older games more accessible.

If you're not sure what to do in any of the other speccy games, just ask :)

Having said what I said, I will say Knight Lore is obviously a seminal game in a way a lot of their other output of that era isn't.

I'd still rather play Cadaver though if I was going to play a game like that again.

Cadaver - now that was a cracking game. But I got stuck somewhere in the middle and never did complete it sadly.

Back to the 8-bits, Alien 8 is probably a better game than Knight Lore, although as the latter came first and was groundbreaking for its time you can see why it was chosen.

Not Rare games, so can't be in the pack, but the best of the genre for its time were probably Head over Heels and Batman - not sure who holds the rights now, I think they were Ocean games, so I guess that would be Ubisoft: I think they bought out Ocean years ago?

I got to bit where you have to push the TNT into the building. Ran out of time on the last one.

They should make a new one of this game. Better physics and controls, some sheen, I'd buy it.

I beat all the main missions in Blast Corps. Can't decide which one was worse, Oyster Harbour or Diamond Sands. Oyster Harbour took me about an hour. I haven't got all the RDU's, Survivors and scientists, but I may call it quits now and move onto something else like Kameo, Conker or Jet Force.

I seem to remember people here defending the multiplayer...there's just no defending that game.

Started playing Conker via this collection tonight, it's ok but the controls are a mess....have they really not added an option to change the axis from its default setting?

Change the axis via the umm control changing thing in the settings of the Xbox One. Just remember to change it back when playing other games.

Got this game at Xmas. Why did they go for the nes version of battletoads? Was it ever released on the snes? I remember having it on the mega drive. That version is obviously better that the nes version. I don't get the choice.
