Killzone Shadowfall (PS4)

Image

A visually impressive, but increasingly boring/frustrating game that believes it has way more gravitas and meaningfullness than it actually does through plot twists which could only have been broadcast ahead clearer if the game's wikipedia page was put into the bat-signal light and shone onto the clouds. Its technically nice to look at with some sweeping vistas and setpieces befitting a launch game but the aesthetic design is industrial blandness and grey ruins/squalor; the cliffside woodland of the early levels long forgotten.

Killzone was pegged as the 'Halo killer' but i always found its generic 'hurr space war' attitude tiresome compared to the more far-reaching story of Halo. Also this has one of the worst 'strawberry float you' endings i've ever seen. I didn't try the multiplayer which i imagine at this point consists of only the most hardcore and maxxed-out kernel of players and I didn't want to play any more of it. At least it was cheap by the time I picked it up but I can't recommend anyone else do the same.

5/10

I bought Kilzone Shadowfall for €1 when they strawberry floated up the pricing on PSN that one time and I still felt ripped off after playing it.

There's a section in Killzone: Shadow Fall relatively early on where you're on a cliff, sort of looking down on various areas of woodland. The game says 'you've got this zip line thing here, by the way' and you're looking down on this fairly expansive space thinking to yourself 'what can I get up to here then? Lovely.' However in the end none of it remotely matters and you end up slodging it out with Helghast, as bloody per.
You stand in the same place in a game like Far Cry 4, or Dishonored, or - sheeeeit - Crysis 2, and the gameplay possibilities are infinitely more interesting and varied.
Killzone's a load of old bollocks.

Tales from the Borderlands - PC

I absolutely loved this from the beginning; its funny without being too wacky but balances that with moments of genuine emotional impact carried through the quality of the writing and facial animation. I like the Borderlands world but never got on with the mmo-like grind and number-shooting in the main games so prefer this as a more condensed experience. My only real complaint is that telltale's tech is great for facial animations but a bit shoddy for movement at times.

I don't have much cause to come in here very often but last week I finished Overcooked in 2 player co-op on Xbox One and it was one of the best multiplayer gaming experiences I've ever had. I'd imagine that it's pretty rubbish played alone but with another player the game really shines and this other player doesn't need to be a gamer as the control inputs are really simple. Hope they make a sequel. 9/10

Uncharted 4 - 9/10

I'm a big fan of the Uncharted series, the first played a major part (along with MGS4) in me picking up a PS3 and it became one of the main reasons to own the system, 2 is an absolute masterpiece and absolutely blew me away at the time, 3 was a little disappointing in some areas with the most frustrating combat of the series but even then I still thoroughly enjoyed it. Much like the first game, 4 played a major part in me picking up the PS4 and I started it earlier this year, blitzing through the first half of the game in less than a week. Then for some reason, on Chapter 12 I just lost interest and barely played it, I'd effectively given up on it. Finally went back to it last weekend and wow, I'm glad I did. I've played through the rest of it since then and completed it today and I absolutely loved it.

Visually it may be the most beautiful game I've played, Uncharted 3 looked amazing on PS3 but somehow this went up another level. My PC may be a lot more powerful than the PS4 but this, just for the art direction and animation alone was on a different level to anything else I've played. I felt the gun play was balanced a lot better than in 3, where it took over and became frustrating. There was a lot more time for the story to develop and to do a bit of exploration without the gun play taking over and when it did it never really outstayed it's welcome or became frustrating. A lot of the set pieces are very predictable (oh look, the ledge collapsed just as I jumped onto it!) and it is of course very linear (Although I appreciated the more open elements in some areas of the game) but it tells a good story and it''s exhilarating to play through. Definitely one of the best titles I've played on the PS4.

Deus Ex Mankind Divided - 7

Agree with pretty much everything Jordan said on the previous page. It's a solid game, just pretty bland. Prague got stale and there werent enough opportunities or reasons to experiment, it became a bit of a slog towards the end.

Shadow Complex Remastered (PC)

In summary, WTF -> OK -> Frustrating -> This isn't bad! -> Frustrating -> That's it, I'm giving up -> WTF?

I bought this as part of a Humble Bundle last year and didn't have any idea what this was about, just that it was some kind of FPS. Wrong, it was actually a 2D Metroid like clone but with 3D style graphics. Once I got over the odd intro (when I realised this was not a FPS), the story changed to events prior to the start of the game. Fighting enemies was fairly difficult and I expect for most people the game will be challenging on normal. But for a veteran with almost 40 years of gaming skills, the game played out how I expected, I'm the hero and all shall fall before me, most of the time (yes, I turned the difficulty down to easy).
Aiming in this weird 2D/3D world was a pain at times, but compared to jumping about to cling on walls, it was a pleasurable experience (note : jumping about on walls and the like is gooseberry fool). As I progressed through the game and acquired upgrades, the game did get more enjoyable until I got to a certain point - I didn't know what I needed to do next.

There was a piece of armour I wanted but it seemed I needed to have a certain number of passkeys. Although the map shows you where items are, it doesn't show you what they are so enjoy backtracking with your new abilities so you can try to find those passkeys. To make matters worse, the map isn't as clear as you think - routes that you want to use often end in dead ends that aren't shown on the map.

So once I'd reached a certain point I just wasted an hour or two going backwards and forwards trying to get to item points, only to hit a dead end when nearby. I then decided to try one last route to get to an item only to find I entered a cut scene, had a battle with a big boss, a further cut scene and then game over. I had no idea this was going to be the end and there was no explanation of the starting scene.

I can't be too hard on this given the small price I paid for it but although I had some fun along the way, most of it was super frustrating.

Painkiller: Black Edition - 8/10

+ Mostly well-designed levels
+ Good, fun to use weapons
+ Good enemy variety
+ Bosses are huge and fun for the most part
- Music adds a bit of energy to it all

- Could've done with more weapon variety
- Some areas go on a bit with the endless onslaught of enemies
- Plot is poor
- Terrible cut scenes

It's taken me months of on-and-off playing to get through Painkiller, and then I blasted through 'Battle out of Hell' (the expansion) in one sitting. :slol: That was good as well, although the final boss was a bit weird. Overall good mindless, gory action. :datass:

The Order 1886 (PS4)

I enjoyed this more than all the criticism had led me to expect, although I did get it on sale rather than paying near-full price at launch.

Firstly it's one of the best looking games I've ever seen; the performance capture is spectacular and the environments look amazing, however that does come with some obvious caveats. Firstly the black bars take up slightly less than half the screen and said environments are pretty small - two concessions necessary to get it running as well as it does given the hardware.

I found the QTEs and silly door-breaking minigames to be a bit egregious, but not as much as the insta-fail stealth sections towards the last third; they were particularly annoying. The werewolf/boss fights were also quite annoying, but few and far between enough to not be too bad of an after-taste. Fortunately each of the guns feel meaty and satisfying, with a few exceptions. I found the charge-up time on the lightning gun to be too long and the main rifle with the stun charges always seemed a bit rubbish.

I really liked the setting and its clear that this was the origin story game for setting up a franchise of Galahad going around the steampunk 19th century fighting supernatural baddies. I would say that such a thing is unlikely but they're making a Knack 2 so there's always hope I guess. Its long enough for a standard singleplayer shooter campaign but with limp collectables and nothing else to do its basically a one-and-done experience unless you want to dig back in on higher difficulties. On the other hand I'm glad they didn't do a token a multiplayer mode that would have been quickly forgotten/taken away development time/resources, so there's that.

I can definitely recommend it if you can find it cheap, but can understand the cost/benefit argument for paying full price.

7/10

Trying to get through some of the smaller games on my PC backlog inbetween playing Twilight Princess HD on the Wii U, managed to complete 5 of them over the last couple of days so here goes...

Paranormal - 3/10

As the name suggests, this game is about the paranormal. The idea is to create something similar to Paranormal Activity, your house is being haunted and you're using your camera to evidence this. It's a very basic game made in Unity, you walk around the house and things fall over, writing appears on the walls etc. You go to bed, things get a little bit worse etc. It's all too low budget and basic to be particularly effective (one scare aside) and although I was compelled to play it to completion it's impossible to recommend compare to any other horror title I've played.

Gunman Clive - 7/10

Okay so this was quite a lot of fun, I remember hearing about it on the DS but I never played it. It's a lovely looking game with mechanics similar to Megaman, levels are short but get progressively harder hand towards the end it was quite tough. Nothing spectacular and frustrating in places but good fun all the same.

Zombie Kill of the Week Reborn - 7/10

Again a simplistic game but a lot of fun. Side scrolling Zombie Shooter where bigger and bigger waves of Zombies come at you, kill them to get money which allows you to unlock blocked areas of the stage (many of which can't be unlocked until certain phases) and new weapons. Basic but entertaining and I had a good time unlocking all the levels and racking up some decent scores.

Switchcars - 8/10

Absolutely bloody brilliant sidescroller where you can switch between a multitude of 'vehicles' ranging from elephants to f-zero style hover cars with everything else in between. As the game scrolls along the terrain changes with certain vehicles working better on other terrain, each terrain change also moves you forward in time so the range of vehicles changes. You have a timer to reach the end of a stage and if it reaches 0 before you get to the next stage then you get attacked by some sort of space whales. It's absolutely mad but I had a blast playing it.

Pulse - Odd/10

I couldn't possibly score this, it's just an odd game. You play as a girl who is blind and therefore the world is represented by sound waves, the game itself is pretty much a straight forward first person platformer with some minor puzzle elements. It has a story told by some sort of bird which appears sporadically. The whole game has a weird, quite unsettling atmosphere which combined with the bizarre art style makes for a really weird experience.

Dead Rising 2 (PS4).

I originally played this quite a few years ago on the PS3 and felt that the original on the 360 was the far superior game. Having played the original on the PS4 recently and this soon after, my opinion on the Dead Risings has changed - DR2 is the better of the two games. Firstly, it is much more accessible. You still have to complete missions within a certain time frame (some of which will end the game if you don't complete in time) but not once did I feel I was under pressure and couldn't take my time just to enjoy the game. Secondly, it is easier. Unlike the first game you don't need to restart it in order to level up and therefore aren't forced to replay earlier missions. Thirdly, it seems to control a lot better - I found aiming and the whole shooting mechanism much more wonky on DR with this being as you'd expect in a game. Lastly, it just seems better graphically.

I wouldn't exactly call this an HD remake though, the graphics still look last gen, shadows can be blocky at times and I'm not sure if this problem exists only in the PS4 version, but in one particular mall the lighting would change suddenly making things darker or brighter. This didn't happen just once and it was always in the same mall.

Finishing the DR remake left me a little disappointed as I didn't enjoy it overly and I also had to face the fact that both DR2 and DR2 off the record were sitting on my PS4 HD for the future. I feel DR2 has reversed this feeling and am now not dreading the prospect of playing "off the record" (although I will leave it a month or two).

Overall an interesting exercise in dispelling myths - DR2 is better than DR and shock horror, right now Chuck feels the better protagonist than Frank.

I thought it was an HAD remaster, which basically means is just upressed. Not a remake anyway. Remake is more like Resi 1 to Resi remake.
