Lords of the Fallen on PS4. This is my second time through this and while I enjoyed it for the most part it’s not without it’s flaws. The biggest issue is that even for this type of game it’s rarely obvious a) where you should be going or b) what you should be doing... also the end boss is a massive cheeky banana split.

7/10... I think I’ll hold off on the third playthrough for now

Doesn't sound like I will be able to complete this.

Lords of the Fallen (PS4). Was always interested in playing this so great news when it turned up as a freebie on PSN+

For anyone who likes Demon/Dark Souls and wants something similar, or anyone who liked them but found them difficult, this is a game you should try. Overall it is not as difficult as the games it is inspired by, but it is difficult in places, particularly the 3rd boss, the humans near the end and the last boss.

Like Dark souls when you die, your "ghost" remains giving you a chance to return to it and reclaim your experience. The weapons and your stats are all upgradeable, but not to the extent of the Dark Soul games that can feel more like working in an XL spreadsheet than playing a game. One thing which I think this game does better is the experience multiplier, the longer you live (without "saving"), the more the multiplier increases, maximising the risk/reward scenarios.

The game is not without its flaws - screen tearing is noticeable (not sure if there is less during later parts of the game and I had just got used to it), the game is piss poor at letting you know where to go next for a fair part of the game and I don't know if I was just unlucky, but the game crashed at least 3 times for me. Bastardly, once after I'd defeated a boss earlier in the game (so had to do the strawberry floater again, which wasn't too bad as it was one of the easier bosses) and on the last boss when I had him down to about a quarter. Special mention must be said for the last boss because it takes banana splitish bosses to a new level, demoting the boss in the graveyard down to just "bitch".

Had the game been a bit better at directing where to go next (probably 3 hours lost through this) and the last boss not been so hard (I think I spent 3 hours trying different weapons tonight before settling with a sword and then having a long drawn out battle) I would have scored it higher.

So yeah, 6. Who is the bitch now Lords of the Fallen?

Ford Racing 3 - PC

Its a sad indictment of the racing game genre when a forgettable and forgotton arcade racer from the mid 2000s has more event variety and a better career mode than Forza Motorsport 5 - proper championships which means every race matters and events where following the visible racing line builds a boost meter or you have to race a series of laps against 1, 2 and 3 opponents like a reverse elimination mode as well as cone gates and time trials. The offroad cars have actual offroad tracks to race on too.

The car list is small but varied and includes some old prototypes as well as cars going back to the 1920s. My only complaint is that the car lists for each event are pretty wide and could have had some more focus or been more specialised and the main game could have been bigger as a result.

7/10 - worth a go when its under a pound in steam sales.

Bound - PS4

I thought this would be another wanky 2-hour indie game and it was, but it tells a very personal story through incredible abstract design and beautiful movement through levels which gave me vertigo on a normal tv so god knows what its like in vr. Its a freebie on ps+ at the moment so is worth a go of an evening.

Zombi

Didn't manage to complete the post game part, but don't think i'll bother to play though the whole game again to give it another try. It's not actually that bad a game but the graphics are terrible, even for being a port of a Wii U game.

Lego City Undercover - aweomse fun, silly sense of humour and stuff, although clunky at times and can be a pain in the arse swapping out disguises to open doors and things. 7/10

The Magic Circle - PC

You play as someone going into a game stuck in development hell for years, doing typically walking sim stuff of overhearing conversations between the developers and the Molyneux-esque director but also reprogramming enemies and the environment to get through combat and puzzles. It touches on the responsibility of creativity, the horrendous nature of fandom and does some genuinely surprising and fascinating things to do with game design and being on the other end of the process. One particular scene near the end where the director goes on a rant at 'E4' after you hijack the on-stage demo, talking about the futility of the industry and the replaceable nature of games was particularly prescient given everything from WB and EA that's happened this year.

Its not too long and doesn't outstay its welcome, but takes the time to make its point even if some of the overall framing is a bit odd.

Gears 4 - 6/10

Well, that felt underwhelming in terms of a campaign. Just sort of ends as well.

I really don't like the direction they took the story in. I hated the visuals at the start of the game. It's weird how the game nails the gameplay, and yet it feels a bit tired. I'm going to put it down to the enemy encounters. They were pretty formuliac, and some of them just weren't that fun. I hated fighting the things that stand on cover.

Was good seeing the old characters near the end though. Fenix JR is just bland, they didn't give me enough reason to care about the other two.

Ditch the robots and shiny environments, get back to the old characters, get more enemy types/interesting scenarios.

The Turing Test

Total Portal rip-off. Luckily Portal is ace and we haven't had one of those in ages, so this was completely welcome. A collection of brilliantly designed headscratchy puzzles with a rather nice story to boot. Reaching the door for each room was always a great 'I am really clever' moment, followed almost immediately by 'I am stupid, why can't I do this?'. Fumbles the ending a little bit, but this still comes highly recommended from me.

ICEY - PC

A clever mix of 2d character action and meta-narrative trickery in the style of The Stanley Parable, however I think the latter is better at it and i'm not an afficionado of games like dmc or bayonetta, which i tend to play through once on easy and call it a day than get into the nuance of the combat systems. I don't feel intrigued to explore all the permutations and weird goings-on with ICEY like with TSP, so i'll call time on this too and think of it fondly in hindsight. Also I think i've played a lot of these meta games this year like Pony Island and The Magic Circle so maybe i'm ready to go back to games which have stories unironically now.

Dead Space 2. I think I only ever played this once, so it was interesting to play again several years later, and fairly soon after the first. It’s a fantastic game but some of the enemy encounters end up being needlessly infuriating, especially the amount of times they can appear behind you. If it had mobility mechanics and environment space like, say, Vanquish, it wouldn’t be as annoying, but everything is so dark, tight and claustrophobic. The last 15 minutes or so is just no fun at all, easily knocks a couple of marks off the score alone. No real, decent antagonist either, coupled with the awful ‘am I going mad?’ thing it keeps shoehorning in.

Now play the wii/ps2/psp version

(Also wikipedia tells me there was an N-gage port of the mobile version, that must be something)

Yeah so this game is glitchy, repetitive, and the most barebones PC port imaginable. The physics are semi-broken too when you unlock the framerate to 60, objects you pick up will just float upwards and other weird gooseberry fool. It also has the worst moment ever committed to the medium in the form of the "use the force to pull down the star destroyer" section (a section that is completely broken thanks to on screen prompts that dont represent what you should actually be doing), but god dammit i still love this game. Flinging enemies around, zapping them with lightning, throwing a saber at a gripped enemy, and a really enjoyable, genuinely good story, plus some of the best SW art design outside the original trilogy movies really elevates what would otherwise be a pretty meh experience. Im still pissed that the erasure of the EU stuff now makes this game non-canon as it was a great origin story of the rebellion.

Titanfall 2

9/10

God damn, thats how you do a SP campaign in a AAA shootbanger. The people making the turgid campaigns in recent CoD games need to pay attention to Respawn and how they do it. A snappy 8-10 hours of gameplay with a change in pace and gameplay almost every level that keeps it always feeling fresh. Not just the standard linear whack a mole gameplay of CoD that hopes that scripted explosions are enough to keep you entertained. TF2 isnt jsut "good for a campaign bolted on to a multiplayer game", its a genuinely great SP game all by itself. Only complaints are the story is fairly paper thin and there arent any really great characters aside from BT

You should play the campaign in Infinite Warfare, I enjoyed it as much as Titanfall 2.

I did, and really enjoyed it, but its been the only decent CoD campaign since BO1. TF2 was better than IW imo too, IW had a better story and spectacle but TF2 had better mechanics, design, and was overall just more fun to play.

I agree with most of that (can't comment on the other CoD's as I've only played Ghosts between BO1 and IW).

For me it was mostly to do with expectation, the press and consensus among gamers seemed to be that IW was dog gooseberry fool and TF2 was Half Life 2 tier good. I found the reality was that there wasn't that much difference between them in terms of quality. I'm going to go through TF2 again on the X1X to try it outside of the hype.

IW is the best CoD since BO1. Unfarily maligned in my opinion. Looks lush on PS4 Pro, too.

Ratchet & Clank (PS4) - really good and enjoyable. I found the
disguise
bit and the last rail pretty frustrating, but other than that pretty much non stop fun. 8

Telltale Guardians Of The Galaxy

I was really looking forward to this after the hugely enjoyable Tales From The Borderlands and (to a slightly lesser effect) Minecraft Story Mode. I remarked in those reviews that Telltale seemed much more confident in a comedy setting rather than the more dour 'serious' efforts that they're more famous for.

Sadly, despite a few high points (not least the soundtrack, which is extraordinary throughout) this is pretty disappointing. Story is really weak, the laughs are really hit and miss, and the usual Telltale failings of tired game mechanics rear their ugly heads one too many times. Getting stuck in an unstoppable dialogue loop AGAIN is particularly galling. Shame.

Need For Speed: Most Wanted on PS3. I’m not usually one for racing games but I fancied giving this a go for a change of pace. It was fun overall but pretty frustrating in places, particularly the later “boss” cars.

Botanicula (PC) - 7/10
+ Nice visuals
+ Some funny moments
+ Great character design
+ Excellent audio design

- A bit formulaic
- A bit repetitive

Decent point-and-click which I didn't actually realise was a point-and-click when I bought it. :slol: As such it took me a long time to get into it, but after the initial boredom, it grew on me quite a lot. Not remarkable by any means, but it has enough character and is short enough (2-3 hours maybe?) to warrant looking into if you like these kind of games.

Kirby's Adventure (NES) - 8/10
+ Decent visuals/art design
+ Good music
+ Absorbing enemy abilities is a good mechanic
+ Nice mix of platforming, minigames, and different gameplay types

- Controls can be frustrating/takes some getting used to
- Not much challenge (apart from the bosses where you need to learn the patterns/employ some trial and error tactics)

This is the first Kirby game I've properly played. It's actually pretty good, bar some initial frustrations. Taking on the abilities of enemies is a simple idea but works really well, and adds some depth to progression through levels and how you tackle certain situations. Solid game.
