Knack 2

Despite the detractors (who the majority I suspect never played it), I enjoyed Knack and was surprised when a sequel sneaked out. Knack 2 is more of the same, doesn't feel technically any better (although it has been a few years since I played the original) but it does have HDR and the ability to unlock the frame rate so I'm guessing it probably is a bit better, particularly for those who have a Pro (which I don't). With the exception of 2 points where I got stuck (and was ridiculously obvious when I looked at a play through of the chapters on youtube  ), I enjoyed every minute of this game. I like the Knack character and his ability (for those who don't know, Knack grows from about 2 foot 6 to 30 feet and can shrink back down again at will) and enjoyed the collectables (unlike most games, every collectable contributes towards Knack's abilities in some way). Overall, it is just a fun game and I just need to decide now whether to play through again (starting with the abilities I've amassed) so I can get all of the collectables I missed, or trade it in at CEX.

The Last Window (DS)

Big improvement on Hotel Dusk for me - at no point did I feel like I was hoplelessly wandering around trying to trigger the next part of the story.
Great visual and sound design and the dialogue was just the right amount of cheesy for the tone of the game. Strongly recommend it to anyone who digs visual novels and walking simulators. The extra level of interaction makes it just that bit more rewarding for me (similar to Phoenix Wright or Danganronpa).

SteamWorld Dig 8/10.

Like I said I can't rate it higher than the sequel because the sequel is a better game, but I'll give it the same score due to liking it just as much if not more.

Rime on PS4. Not sure what to make of this. I didn’t love it but I didn’t hate it either. It was a pretty enjoyable game but despite being quite short I felt it dragged a little toward the end. It does have a remarkably easy platinum trophy if that’s your bag however.

Sonic Adventure 2 - PC/Steam version

Same old buggy/jank game but still fun and a good nostalgia trip. It's a decent port, all things considered. Up to 1080p res with widescreen and the game still looks pretty. Controls nicely too. I'd say this is the definitive version of the game.

Wow, I just came in here to say that I finished Sonic Adventure 1 last night (360 version on XB1) and that I thought it would be an unusual choice!

I finished SA1 back on the Dreamcast and haven't really touched it since. I remember back then thinking it was an 8/10 game, but I think my memory has been sullied since due to some poorer titles in the series. I actually found it to be reasonably good with the only issues being some occasional camera shonkyness and some issues with the homing jump attack. Generally I still think it deserved an 8/10 back in the day as it lacked the absolute precision Nintendo were putting into their platformers at the time. Having said that, I thought the action level designs were pretty fantastic, I didn't realise there were so many different routes. The hub world could have been almost entirely stripped out though as it added nothing aside from the mystic peaks music!

Definitely going to try Adventure 2 as I never played that back in the day as I was a bit salty over the DC being killed off and Sega going multiformat!

Wrote about this a bit in the Switch thread but:

Oxenfree: 6/10

It was hard not to be disappointed with this, partly because of all the praise it received on release but mainly due to how well it starts. The naturalistic dialogue, lovely conversation system and beautiful art made a fantastic first impression. The first couple of scenes too work incredibly well and flesh out the teenage protagonists in a way that just works.

Where it started to go wrong for me was after the #spooky main plot kicked in. The characters all, without fail, talk with a Buffy-esque lack of self preservation so when gooseberry fool starts going down the creepiness of the visuals was offset by a bunch of teenagers engaging with the supernatural like the would with a slightly annoying younger brother. The gameplay too is dull as dishwater, consisting largely of walking from one location to another and tuning a radio.

There's the hint of a genuinely brilliant game here, one which is unfortunately drowned out by the inconsequence of the dialogue and the static nature of the gameplay.

Firewatch - 7/10

I feel like I'd have enjoyed this a lot more had I played it before 'What Remains of Edith Finch', as walking simulators go it remains better than most I've played, it's a beautiful game which tells a sad tale and really nails the feeling of loneliness. Unfortunately I felt like it was bogged down at times by too much unnecessary wandering and backtracking over the same areas. I didn't really like the ending either, I get what they were going for with it but it just felt a bit dissatisfying. Not a bad game by any stretch, I still had a good time with it, just not quite as good as I was expecting either.

Little Nightmares - PC

This is definitely in the Limbo/Inside camp of "disturbing 2D physics-y platformers with bizarre and unexplained environments/circumstances" game design. As I said in Currently Playing, it's like a horrendous stop-motion animation from the early 1980s which was ostensibly aimed at kids but is definitely NOT for kids. Some of the areas and characters are outright grotesque, the Long-armed bastard in the prison :dread: , the chefs which look like melted obese children :dread: , the corpulent guests piling out of their orgy rooms in a tidal wave :dread: the mannequin/floaty japanese ghost finale :dread: :dread: are all extremely unpleasant and very memorable. It was just the right length I think, and leads to an interesting question which affects the other games like it; does it need to have a predefined meaning or story? There is clearly a reason for all these horrendous monstrosities to be on this massive boat, who is this weird kid in a yellow mac who is trying to escape? I wonder if the DLC goes into this, however I can wait a bit and come back, which seeing as my girlfriend found it anxiety-inducing to watch and described the combination of music and sound effects as "the soundtrack to a migraine", that might be a while. A few bits were quite trial-and-error, however it wasn't out of not knowing what to do, rather how to do it.

I definitely recommend this if you liked Limbo, Inside etc.

8.5/10

I agree with this entirely. A lot of these narrative games are very dull in terms of gameplay. I haven't played a single one of them that has engaged me in that respect. This was much the same. The main cast became really annoying to me as well.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole - 6/10

Found the plot largely uninteresting but it was sprinkled with enough gags to make it somewhat enjoyable overall. Also preferred the battle system over The Stick of Truth's but it did get a bit laboured towards the end.

Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy - 8/10

Never played the original games as I gave the PS1 a swerve, back in the day, but really enjoyed this collection. Managed to 100% all three games too (plus a few more % here and there...) so that speaks volumes about how much it held my attention. Actually found the linearity quite refreshing and it certainly suits my lifestyle to have something that I can dip in and out of but still make tangible progress.

Dying Light

For the most part I've really enjoyed playing this with Pedz and Jazzem. Not sure how I would feel doing it solo but I reckon I'd still have fun. The day/night cycle is put to good use. I very much wanted to give this an 8 but strawberry float me the end was so dreadful. Not just the comic book philosophical bad guy but the final missions were really uneven. There is a great sense of freedom to the way most of the game plays but towards the end artificially (and extremely lazy explanation for) taking away skills just made it worse. Perhaps they should have left the grapple hook for an end game reward if they were so obviously concerned about the player trying to use it. Oh and a QTE boss fight which was never a thing through the whole game until that point. Oh and the dreadful poundland Scarecrow Arkham section which made no sense beyond trying to be narrativly wanky. The main story was never much more the serviceable anyway.

Fab to just play (if a bit unpolished at points) and many of the side quests are surprisingly good. Even the process of unlocking safe zones is less of a chore then it should sound. Loved the look of the second area but found it less enjoyable to play in. I'm looking forward to playing the DLC and seeing how that compares.

I'd agree with this, but because I had so much fun I would give it an 8. The good for me outwayed then bad, just enough for the 8.

Yeah I think I'd settle on an uneven 8; simultaneously one of the most enjoyable and aggravating 8s I've played!

The co-op, fun (if sometimes spotty) traversal, cathartic combat and incredible visuals + audio help put it over the edge for me. Of course I had issues with repetitious structure, a fair helping of jank and the wildly mediocre storytelling (despite a few good performances and exchanges). Even so, it was a pretty damn quick 38 hours.
