My mate actually played most of this as he is looking at getting PSVR. I only got to do the first 2 levels in VR, the rest I saw on the TV as he completed it. A mental Time Crisis / on rails style shooter with mad psychologists and demons/clowns, set in a fairground ride. Sounds weird but as was free on PS Plus and didn’t cost me anything, it’s certainly worth a play.

The VR works well and it’s sweat-inducing at times due to the relentless shooting at times. Recommended and a 7/10 from me

One thing to note for anyone else wanting to play this, if you are at all susceptible to motion sickness, its likely you'll feel it to some extent with this game.

Because its set on rollercoaster like rides, there is both turning and tilting of the world while you are sat not moving, makes the game almost impossible to play for me.

Quantum Break (PC)

Let me start by saying that the story behind Quantum Break is quite good – a time machine ends up causing a fracture which will lead to time coming to an end and your character along with very few allies will try to save everything, never knowing whether time can actually be changed or whether the end is simply inevitable.

Cut scenes are somewhat odd, some at 60fps (which is probably using the game engine) and some at 30fps (which typically look a bit better). The game also contains “4 episodes”, four 22 minute “professionally” made videos which enhance the story. This is certainly something new in video games but whether this has a place in games, I’ll leave you to decide.

Prior to each of these videos there are junctions where you can choose how the story progresses. Personally I don’t think these fit in well with the game. Not because they aren’t a good idea, but because they are from the other side of the game, i.e. the villains and not the character you play making their inclusion somewhat odd.

I found the last battle quite difficult and disappointing that I had to reduce the difficulty level from normal just to get through it. Now understanding better why I was being killed in that section would probably allow me to go back and complete it on normal, but this isn’t really something I can be bothered to do. When you’ve attempted something like 6 times with either a cut scene or loading time each time you need to try it again, you become a bit frustrated and just want it to end, no longer bothered about whether you need to reduce the difficulty level.

There are a lot of collectables in the game with many of them being things you read. I couldn’t be bothered to read all of these but I don’t think it had a particularly negative impact on my understanding of the story.

Overall, worth a play but it is no Alan Wake….

The last battle in Quantum Break is an absolute strawberry floating abomination. That (and the fact that the game offers no replay value whatsoever) aside, I thought it was wonderfully entertaining, probably one of my favourite Xbox One 'Exclusives'.

But wouldn't you need to replay to get all of the achievements as some are due to picking the other junction, although I suppose you could just replay that part.

Glad it wasn't just me who didn't enjoy the last part. Shame that some games have these kind of "cheap" endings that leave you with a sour taste as your last memory of the game.

Yeah, you just had to quickly reload the junction and pick the other option. I enjoyed the story for what it was but I had no inclination to see it again. Would have preferred the game to include other modes or something to pad out the experience. They didn't even do DLC, I assume because the game didn't do big enough numbers.

RiME

After an initial 10 minutes of wandering around trying to work out wtf was going on a very enjoyable game, pretty easy puzzling/exploration but challenging enough to be fun. Not the longest but if you picked it up on PSN when it was free or are a Game Pass subscriber defo worth a look. 8/10

Breathing in the Wild - 9.5/10

Worth every penny, one hell of a game. Still prefer Odyssey though.

Shadow Of Mordor - PS4

A good solid game. Somewhat unspectacular and derivative, but the combat is satisfying and I had fun with it. Quite short for an open world game, but at least it didn't outstay its welcome.

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood

After a bit of confusion at the beginning the game just went from strength to strength with a very cool twist. I think I understand why some might be disappointed with the level design in Wolfenstein 2 as the open areas are fantastic, probably the closest thing to Goldeneye this generation. The final boss wasn't particularly good but it also wasn't particularly difficult so not much of a problem.

I've been playing this at the same time as Wolf 2 on the Switch which made it a little confusing but I loved it.

Battle Chef Brigade - Switch

I found this a bit of a disappointment after all the hype it had received from many indie fans. Simplistic gameplay which often boiled down to repeating challenges when you know which equipment would have been most beneficial (and very little tactical changes from battle to battle) and a completely (to me) unengaging story line.
I managed to see it out to the end thanks to its short run time (about 9 hours), but after looking promising for the first 2-3 hours, it ended up becoming something of a repetitive slog.

Prey (PS4)

I played the original on the 360 and from what I remember of it (admittedly not much) I don't think it was anything like this. This is probably closer to something like Bioshock and if it had been called "Bioshock Future" it wouldn't be out of place. The story feels a bit flimsy and you need to get to the end to understand it (if you've not managed to guess on the way along). The usual collectables (e-mails, recordings and books to "read") are scattered throughout with a number of items locked behind either password protected key entry systems or heavy items you can't move until you have upgraded. Hacking terminals and key entry systems is quite good with a mini game that requires you to move a ball to a location within a certain amount of time to "hack" whatever it is you are hacking. As with most games, you need to level up this ability to be able to hack the higher security items. Hacking is quite key to this as it allows you to get into rooms and safes that otherwise you would need to try and find the code for so building up your hacking ability will certainly lead to an easier run through of the game. This was probably the most enjoyable aspect of the game for me as getting something unlocked meant there would be some necessary supplies available.

Sadly, that is pretty much all I have nice to say about the game. The story started interestingly but didn't really build. There are many side missions scattered throughout the game with some rewarding you with trophies and some with strawberry float all. The main story mission ends with two choices but I was unable to see one of them because of something I'd done earlier in the game and my only option would be to return to a much earlier point in the game which I can't be bothered to do (annoyingly I had saved just before the point where you could make a choice but by then, the outcome was no longer optional due to something I'd done earlier).

Not sure if I was playing this wrong but it felt too hard on normal and even on the easier settings it was not a walk in the park making the game fairly frustrating at the beginning until I turned down the difficulty. The loading is also pretty poor, a fairly long load between areas in the game and at the end, a loading chain where you need to go to X, Y and Z which involves a sprint to one area (long load), a run to the main lift (not a load but a pause whilst the lift takes you between areas) and then a sprint to another area (long load). Whilst this is fine when there is plenty to do in the game between the areas, when you are just trying to get to a place in the game with nothing to do on the way, it is a bit gooseberry fool. Finding the area of an objective is also painful at times as although you have a sort of guide, it doesn't show you exactly where to go which leads to a bit of back and forth.

Shame really as this could have been a fairly good game but it has been let down by a number of frustrating elements which I find hard to believe play testers let through without questioning "is this fun?". Not being able to see the alternative ending easily is the final nail in the 5/10 coffin.

Far Cry 5 (Xbox One X) [6]

Not as good as 3 or 4 and, as they are mechanically quite similar, I found this one to be quite boring. Some sections just didn't seem well play tested at all (the Clutch Nixon race events in particular were infuriating given the unresponsive vehicle controls). The ending was just plain bad almost like they were hoping no one would get that far. The characters were badly written, too. The whole "knock out the player to advance the story" mechanic usually happened when I was in the process of doing something interesting and was maddening after about the forth time (who thought making the player go through Jacob's training ground five times was a good idea?). The loading times were a nightmare, as well (my stats on Xbox live say I've played for 1.5 days, yet my in game playtime is 18 hours!).

This should have been a good game. The game had lots of potential just the execution felt very uninspired and some designs decisions seemed to only be there to actively frustrate.

Assassins Creed Origins - PS4

Finished the main story.... It's Assassins Creed but more polished and prettier. Loads of busy work and it's still very repetitive but it is enjoyable.

Love the hunting and crafting and the legeno weapons.

Hated the fact that anything 2 levels or above is basically unkillable.

Paid 25 for it and happy with that for 30 + hours of fun. Might keep playing to max out a few more stats.

Wish my image sig would work

Xenoblade Chronicles - 9/10

+ Sense of scale is really impressive
+ Combat is enjoyable
+ Story is decent
+ Love the exploration
+ Good music
+ Kept me playing for ages and I didn't really get bored

- Looks shoddy
- So. Many. Sidequests.
- Those premonitions during battles of the enemy's upcoming move - strawberry floating hell. I don't need to see it all play out really slowly in an unskippable preview, just flash the stats up at the top of the screen and let me get on with it FFS.
- Some of the 'systems' like SP, affinity, gems/cylinders/crafting are just annoying more than anything.

It took me 148 hours but I got there in the end. I loved being able to sit down and sink 2-3 hours into this in one sitting, knowing I'd barely made a dent in it, but at the same time it also seemed to go on forever at times (mainly because of the endless sidequests). I was never bored though and I played it fairly consistently over what's probably been about a year :slol: . For a game that I've played and enjoyed so much it wouldn't be anywhere near my all-time favourites, which is a bit strange, but I think that's because it just does everything solidly rather than anything new or amazing. It's great though. Thinking of picking up a cheap Wii U at some point just to play Xenoblade Chronicles X. :shifty:

Xenoblade Chronicles was a real surprise for me. I skipped most of the sidequests, beat it in about 75 hours. Loved it.

Chronicles X is pretty good, but I was a little disappointed with it because the main story was lacking in comparison to the first game, despite being a pretty interesting concept in its own right. It is well worth playing despite some annoyances, the sense of scale is again incredible, and the world was kinda mind-blowing in some respects. I'd just wait and see if it ends up on Switch, Xenoblade 2 is on that system, and it seems more like the first game than X.

Wolfenstein 2

So my year of Wolfenstein is over. This is a very different beast to the first and the add on so I understand why some were disappointed, the level design is definitely a step back. In ToB the open areas were perfect and it always seemed possible to kill the commanders with stealth, even if I ended up going in guns blazing a bit of exploration showed the various routes and possibilities that were possible. In Wolf 2 I'm fairly certain a few of the scenarios are impossible to complete with stealth. However, going in guns blazing is as fun as ever so it didn't really detract from my enjoyment.

What Wolf 2 gets absolutely spot on is the story telling, dialogue, characters and style. The game is just cool as strawberry float. I can't remember ever enjoying a story as much in a game, it just ramps up getting more and more crazy but constantly rewarding. I enjoyed every minute and fully intend to go back and do all the side stuff.

Slightly unrelated to the game I want to point out that I played this on Switch. The magic of playing this in handheld nice stayed with me throughout the entirety of the game. Another fantastic FPS on a handheld.

Pikmin 2 - 9/10

All done, rescued Louie, 201 treasures, marvellous game. The only niggle I had with it was the last few dungeons being 10+ floors long.

Same, on Xbox One. Think I got to around 60 hours and completed every quest, apart from finding the papyrus scrolls (bit tedious). Beautiful game and more enjoyable content than previous games. The sheer scale of it means there's a fair bit of repetitive fort-infiltration etc. but it's enjoyable so never gets dull. Excited for this year's Odyssey and the new choice-based direction.

9/10
