I completed Fantasia (AKA Moon Cresta) in 1983. At the time I would have given it an 8 but probably only a 5 by today's standards.

Completed For Honor last night and while the campaign was a bit basic it was fun and the multiplayer is great fun when you can find players.

Assassin's Creed Origins - The Hidden Ones Xbox One X [8]

+Does a lot of what the main game does so well: sumptuous graphics / atmospherics, interesting locales, well-acted characters.
+The Hidden Ones / Assassins are a more organised group in this one and are evolving into the Creed which is cool (Assassins bureau, hooded clothes, etc.).
+Aya (without spoiling the 'reveal' / ret con) is great. Maybe we'll get to see her more in DLC down the line. There's certainly a story there (as long as they don't fudge it like they did with Aya's sections towards the end of the main game).
+Good value - £7.99 seems fair.

-... but also has some of the base game's issues: the story beats don't always work (the climax doesn't seem earned and there is relatively little development of the First Civilisation connection to Egypt), the gameplay is repetitive and the combat is underdeveloped.

I just finished Iconoclats today. It's an Indie game on PC, and it is strawberry floating great. It's a Metroidvania game, kinda. Anyway, EVERYONE should play it. 9/10

Layers of Fear (PC). Fairly short and not really that scary. Just a story driven collectable hunt with a few puzzles thrown in for good measure. Graphically quite nice and enjoyable enough for free, but I don't think it is worth more than a few quid if you have to buy it. 5

I finished Trials of the Blood Dragon the other day and despite people knocking it I actually Liked it, Id give it a 7 out of 10. Maybe the fact I didnt really pay for it helps, if you like trials stuff you should like it, its basically Trials's gameplay with Far Cry Blood dragons piss taking and pop culture refrences, it feels a little stale at times though with it being yet another Trials.

Resident Evil 7 - 6/10

I didn't like it as much as I thought I would. The pacing was off, the ship part sucked, I docked a point for that alone. The last boss was hilariously easy as well.

South Park: Stick of Truth - 9/10

Played the first 5 minutes of this years back and then put off returning to it, the prospect of turn based battles really wasn't doing it for me. Really glad I went back as I ended up absolutely loving it. The turn based battles actually work really well, they're fun to play and there's none of the grinding I was expecting. I only found one enemy I didn't beat comfortably on a first/second attempt (Al Gore :x ) but when I returned to him later in the game I managed to beat him. It's absolutely hilarious, so many great moments for fans of the series and moments where I really couldn't believe how far they were pushing it (Nazi Zombie Kardashian Foetus Boss ), an absolute blast to play and probably the first game since Breath of the Wild that I found impossible to put down until I completed it. Brilliant.

Just finished Cat Quest on PS4.

Its a pretty good game, challenging at times but in a good way the story's ok and combat was fun.

Cuphead (PC)

Back in the 80s, games were quite hard. Partly due to probably not having enough testing (resulting in parts of games being impossible) and partly due to them being hard to extend the very little content that they contained. Fortunately games have evolved, we have massive worlds to explore and for the most part, the developers want you to see the whole game. If games had evolved down a slightly different path with those games just getting prettier, we would have ended up with something like Cuphead.

Cuphead probably appears as some kind of 2D platformer with very nice graphics, but really it is closer to a 2D shoot-em-up/platforming hybrid. The game is split over 3 islands (plus a casino finale) with a few levels that could be considered mainly platforming (Run & Gun) and the majority being boss type fights. If you were able to play through the game and complete each level on your first attempt, you would end up spending less than 2 hours on the game (adding up my completion time for each level shows a total of 1 hour and 47 minutes). So not really a great deal of content. Checking the total time played on Steam however shows a time of over 30 hours. That additional time was not spent replaying the game because it is good fun, but because it is so hard you are forced to replay levels over and over again if you want to proceed which in my opinion, is not a good thing.

Why is the game hard? Well, firstly it has been designed that way – each boss will have a number of phases or attacks you need to learn, some easier and some very difficult. Learning patterns is not my idea of a fun game, but maybe this has a lot of appeal for some players. The second reason it is difficult is because the size of the graphics, in parts making movement options very limited. Not sure if this is by design or just how it has turned out. The third reason is down to randomness, i.e. sheer luck. There is not normally a set order in which the bosses use their attacks so some battles can end quite quickly if they use an attack you have a good strategy for or they can be very painful if they keep attacking you with something you can’t always avoid. The first phase of the devil (the last battle) is particularly frustrating until you come up with a good technique for each of his attacks. The third phase is also difficult as there is a lot happening on the screen and you really need a bit of luck to get through that. Particularly noticeable in the first phase of the devil battle (which is also the longest phase) is that there are some scenarios where death simply is unavoidable, regardless of how skilled you are.

For the majority of players, there isn’t going to be much fun in this game, just frustration. Some of the aeroplane boss battles nudge towards fun as does the Dice King’s casino (with the actual Dice King battle spoiling it IMO). As I’ve mentioned this is not an easy game and like those games from the 80s there are no infinite lives or continues and unlike difficult games of today (think Souls) you can’t level up so playing and replaying levels isn’t going to give you more lives etc, it is just going to let you learn the patterns.

There are a number of coins you can collect along the way to purchase various upgrades (although getting the coins isn’t that easy) and the abilities are necessary for certain bosses, again being a trial and error as to which combination of upgrades work best for each boss. Of course, you can only have one type of each ability active at any one time so the game isn’t going to be too helpful and on the Dice King’s casino, you have to fight a number of bosses in one run so changing abilities between fights isn’t possible so you really need to work out which is best for the majority you will face.

For me, I became a little obsessed in completing this. Not because I was enjoying it, but because having paid for it, I felt that I had a right to see the end – something that I think everyone should be entitled to but given only 12% of players have the achievement for completing the game, many have been forced to give up on it. My thoughts on this game are in direct conflict to the praise heaped on it by many critics and I’m ok with that because the difficulty makes something that could have been fun and a quite good gaming experience, something that is just frustrating and annoying. As a result, difficult to recommend this to anyone. PS4 players - be grateful this is an exclusive.

Mass Effect 6/10

It aged badly. Story is still pretty cool and the best in the series. The gameplay is clunky as strawberry float though, and the level design is poor. The bugs as well are bad, had a few times where the elevators refuse to work, forcing a reload. The game also buggered up and forgot all my graphics settings, in particular, the resolution kept defaulting to sub 1080p. The solution was so bizarre to this. Taking it at face value, it is a pretty decent version, the button mapping was great on the keyboard.

To give it credit, the game was funny at times, especially the renegade dialog options.

Perhaps I should have phrased that as 'Once I actually got into it, it became probably the first game since Breath of the Wild that I found impossible to put down until I completed it.' ;)

Kirby Star Allies - 7.5/10. I would of given it higher if the main game was just a bit longer.

Bayonetta 2 - 8.5/10

Great fun once you've got a sense of what you're doing and you've mastered a few combos. I ended up spamming the few I was able to do consistently, and never had a sense of whether certain combos were more effective against certain enemies, but it never detracted from the sheer fun of the experience. The grading system never feels unfair, and the various minigames and platforming thrown between the fights were always nice deviations.

I have the download code of the original Bayonetta, but not ready to jump straight back in yet.

Super Mario Odyssey 7/10.

My first ever Mario experience and it was....ok. Nothing too taxing but can’t see my rushing to play any other SM games as patently not my thing. My boys will like it though no doubt

Wolfenstein: The New Order (PS4)

Quite enjoyable, but some of the missions are pretty dull and I grew bored toward the end. Not a bad game for a fiver, but nothing that makes me want to play any of the follow ups.

6/10

Generally, though, I'm really quite bored of gaming. Time to put it to one side for a while methinks*

*On reflection I think I just need to play the right games. Fired up Doom 3 (again) and was as happy as a pig in gooseberry fool.

Far Cry 3 - 7/10 (360)

+ Looks decent
+ Good range of weapons and vehicles
+ Some fun missions
+ Reasonably interesting premise
+ Huge map
+ Some good distractions/side missions/activities

- The story quickly descends into farce
- The main character and his friends are whiny, unlikeable and annoying
- The writing is awful
- Traversing the map can get tedious

It's a pretty good game overall, and the flaws don't stop it being fun, but they do detract from the enjoyment somewhat, especially throughout a relatively long game. I stuck with it for 36 hours until I'd completed everything though, so that probably says something in itself.
While I don't know all that much about Far Cry 4, the impressions I get is that it's more of the same in a different setting, and if that's true I'd probably pass on it.

Steamworld Dig 2 - 8/10

Just over 8 hours of great fun. Lots of variety and a pretty engaging plot, which surprised me! A few mechanics broke the challenge of the game in the latter third, but there seems to be plenty left for me to do if I jump back in.

Ridge Racer 2 - PSP

This is a compilation/greatest hits album of RR past, drawing tracks from every game up going back to the first. It was fun, but the first third or so was insultingly easy, only ramping up to an actual challenge after a couple of hours. I understand needing to get people into the feel of it, but this takes way too long to do so.

Another strangeness that apparently became the norm was how the cars handled while drifting. As long as you are in a slide the car sort of goes round corners automatically, regardless of the drift angle. So its possible to be carried around corners while facing the opposite direction, like it'd been pulled by a large magnet. You get used to it, but its very strange.

I got to the end credits but there were more races afterwards against single extremely tough cars which I tried a few times but was just unable to catch, and by that point i'd had enough really, to the extent thst i'm not sure if i'll bother with RRV on PS2 or RR6 on 360, especially as the latter apparently has absolutely loads of events very similar to what I played here, certainly for a long time. Weirdly, despite having various other game modes available like elimination, the main single player mode was just series of 3 lap races with increasingly stringent finishing position requirements to progress, which definitely got old after a while too.

After playing this I can understand why Namco tried to branch out with R:Racing taking a more realistic approach and even the death knell that was Unbounded because they couldn't just keep making the same thing over and over.
