Nier Automata - Great game, very unique and full of character. Enjoyed the basic combat and some of the side quests. The end of the game really does drag out though with far too much of the terrible hacking gameplay. 8/10

Axiom Verge - Switch - 9/10

Wow, what a brilliant game this is! I started playing it on PC a while back but stopped when I heard it was coming to Switch as it felt like the perfect platform for it. Picked it up in the recent Spring sale and blasted through the whole thing in a few days.

It's a great example of the Metroidvania genre, possibly one of the best I have played, and really nails some of the core feelings of exploring an unknown space, acquiring skills and tools that expand your ability to explore and progress, and some really satisfying combat!

It does involve an amount of backtracking, but then pretty much any game in this genre does - and I personally really enjoyed going back to the different areas to see what new things I could find as I progressed. It does include a mechanism to travel between areas fairly quickly as well which comes in handy.

Oh and I almost forgot the music! The soundtrack to this game is incredible, there are several tracks from here that have gone straight into my game soundtrack playlist.

All in all a great game, would recommend to any fan of the genre.

Topatoi

What a drainer of a game this is. The controls are pants. An OAP scooter has better, smoother controls than this.

The camera angles make for awkward jumping, you spend most of the time falling. I’ve seen better camera angles in porn.

The graphics are as crusty as a crusty bit of half eaten toast that’s been in the rubbish bin for a week.

This game is so gooseberry fool it’s given me a headache.

Haha, chops busted!

At the end of the day good music is good music, who cares where it comes from?

I had my music on shuffle during a run today and a remix from one of the Castlevania soundtracks came on, it was probably the best song I head for the whole run!

AC Origins - 7

Game world - 10/10. Only Witcher 3's comes close out of what I've played.
Plot - 0/10. Irredeemably awful. I can't believe the writing and characters are so bad considering all the effort, time and money that went into making the game. Honestly probably worse than any film I've ever seen. Decent side quests; some good, some bad, almost all better than the main story.
The move towards a more RPG-style game is welcome, but has some problems. All the items are the same. Finding the same shield gets stale, and more unique items would have encouraged and rewarded further exploration. They could have at least had different items or shops between the Greek/Roman/Egyptian towns/shops/settlements. You're not given options in any quests and you can't really interact with the world outside of them, but it's still fun to explore, even if it's quite look-but-don't-touch. Will keep this to revisit but don't see much point in NG+ at the moment.
Overall a step in the right direction, with a little more added details and another good location (Roman Empire?) the series could and should hit new heights.

P4G (Vita).

After 5 months i finally got through this monster, clocking in at a minute shy of 88 hours (true / golden ending).

Overall i liked a lot about it, and enjoyed my time with the gang. The first 10 hours or so flew by before i had come to understand the mechanics of the way the game progresses, but i really disliked the dungeon crawling. Or at least i did "in the moment", looking back on it, it seems ok and pretty fair, but in the heat of the moment it would just draw me out of the yarn that i was enjoying so much.
I see P4DAN is on sale atm on PSN so i think i will pick that up. Rhythm games are my bag anyway, so i dont see it detracting from the story in the same way that the dungeon crawling did.

8.

Oh, and any recommendations for games with a similar feel to P4(G) (but ideally without the dungeon crawling) much appreciated. Annoyingly P3P is not in the PSN sale and i dont think i would play a 100 hour JRPG on the big screen so cant really justify P5.

Recore: Definitive Edition (XB1) - 7/10

Good platforming and combat. World was a bit bland and had a poor final level. Hope it has a sequel.

Metro 2033 Redux (XB1) - 7.5/10

Previously played some of it on 360 but started again on XB1. Nice atmosphere and storyline with solid combat. Will play the sequel in the summer.

Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology, a few days ago.

Pretty solid RPG with a unique turn-based grid system for battles. What really sets it apart though is the story and the writing, and a time travel element which is always cool and is done well here. Not just that but the game splits into two timelines which you can switch between. New to the 3DS version is the voice acting, which I think was very good - it brings to mind Shadows of Valentia which also had high quality voices.

The graphics are a little basic and they mesh a little weirdly with the sound, which is very good. However, for the most part the character portraits are really nice and were completely overhauled from the DS version (though I prefer some of the old ones, especially Raynie's). It's also a bit weird how some key characters are not voiced or given portraits. There are some scenes where the main characters have voiced dialogue and they're talking to completely silent people and it seems a little odd. Otherwise, it's impressive how much of the game is voiced.

The time-travelling and timeline-switching mechanic is cool but sometimes it felt like a simple chore because you'd basically be told exactly what you have to do to change the future and it's not something that takes skill or much thinking. Just sometimes, though.

Back to the writing, and the characters: I enjoyed it for how dark it could be. Or rather, mature. The main character doesn't mess around. He'll openly kill people if he thinks he has to and the game doesn't get all maudlin about it. I liked all the political talk and machinations, and how the problem of desertification complicates it all. I purposefully got 'bad' endings in the game because I wanted to see what they were. If you make the 'wrong' choice there's some text or even scenes sometimes describing the future you've created with a mix of good and bad results. Like in Fallout New Vegas haha, except you're meant to avoid these endings.

I liked the world and appreciated how all the NPCs have new things to say after even fairly minor events happen.

That said I'm not sure if I'm going to bother going for the true ending, at least not just yet. I only have a pretty vague idea of how to get it (and I don't like looking up guides). It seems like I have to complete most of the sidequests but some of them I can't be bothered doing when I could be playing something else. Maybe one day.

Kirby Star Allies - 7.5/10
No denying the game is a lot of fun. All the abilities feel great to use, combining even with just the elements makes it feel unique, bosses in particular are fun to fight, the game looks and sounds fantastic, and it gets kinda wacky towards the end which I love. I couldn't really give it higher as the game was quite short, the extra modes are either very basic or mostly repeats of the main story content, and most of it felt a little too easy even for a kirby game when you have 3 companions tearing up the levels. Still though, I had a good time playing, and multiplayer is a highlight.

Story About My Uncle - 7/10

Generally enjoyed it myself, though it is pretty short yet the last level felt so long that it could've done with split up in middle or so, I can't see myself trying for all achievements on this one (or close to) so I just considered it done with for now.

Well worth a playthrough, though. Didn't mind the things that people were having issues with (save graphics on characters, though I think its kinda cute in ugly way)

Yeah pacing's a bit weird, as you say it probably could've done with more level divides.

Lovely experience overall though, first person platforming is enthralling throughout and there's some pretty gorgeous environments considering the low budget. Though err aye those character models shouldn't be viewed too close :p

Asura's Wrath - Xbox 360.

Lets get the big negative out of the way; you NEED to buy the extra chapter at the end or there is literally no point playing the game. Fortunately now you can pick up the main game for about £5, making the total cost about a tenner, however this is a really scummy business practice that i'm glad hasn't caught on.

Now, this is the most mad, out-there and spectacular game I have ever played. The scale and sheer madness of what happens is almost beyond words; some of the boss fights make the big moments from god of war 3 look like ants arguing over a leaf on the ground. Its essentially a playable anime series with all the nonsense, hyper violence and people yelling all the time that goes along with it. The game is about 2 thirds QTEs, broken up with boss fights and battling groups of enemies, which might rile some people but I thought it worked well for this.

I reallt enjoyed this and can definitely recommend it, however if the dlc is ever taken down from sale then do not buy it and just watch a playthrough on youtube as without it there is a significant chunk missing.

How random, I just started this yesterday. Enjoying it so far, bit miffed about the whole extra chapter thing though, didn't realise that was the deal.

Yeah, without chapter 4 the game ends on a cliffhanger which, given what happens up to that point and especially after is a real dick move. Chapters 11.5 and 15.5 are nice extras which fill out the story a bit more but aren't necessary and the 'lost' episodes are Asura fighting Ryu and Akuma, because Capcom.

Bloodborne - 9/10

Had the game since launch but for whatever reason it never hooked me until I started playing again a few weeks ago. Obviously its a great game, not really sure what else to say about it, other than that if you've never played it for some reason, it still holds up as one of the best games of the generation and is well worth anyone's time.

God of War (2018) - 8/10

Also really good. Coming straight out of Bloodborne onto this didn't do the game any favours. Its a stunningly beautiful game and if you have a PS4 Pro and a 4K HDR TV, this is the game to play (play in favour resolution rather than performance mode). It has some issues, there are far too many different items for a start, it's needlessly complicated, but under all that its a solid gameplay experience (when its all unlocked) on top of an engaging world with extremely pretty graphics.

Hard not to let them be close to you when you got one that likes to go with you, haha.

Black Mesa - 9/10

Excellent way to replay Half Life 1, I want to go back and play through it again but for now I'll move onto other games. In meantime though have this lovely screenshot I've took:

Would agree with most of this. Whilst it's clearly the most polished game in the series with lots of positive aspects I just can't say I loved it when the story is such utter dross, plus it does become a bit repetitive. In terms of characters and setting I much preferred Syndicate personally.
