Bloodborne - Like the Souls games and just as good too.

Bastion - Like Transistor but is the lesser of the two. Still a very good game but I preferred how combat and abilities worked in Transistor.

Etrian Odyssey IV is awesome, Dandy Kong. Shopto have it for around 25 quid now. The Millenium Girl is also great.

I haven't started Persona Q yet and I have had that since launch. Whoops.

Super Mario Land 1 - 8/10

It's short, the platforming can be a bit tricky and it's confusing. It is however a great little game, the music as ever for a gameboy game exceeded my expectations and the levels had enough variety and challenge to make it a solid game. I hadn't played it up until now, infact it was the one 2D mario platformer I hadn't played.

Game 25: Blackrock Mountain: A Hearthstone Adventure
Image
First time back playing Hearthstone regularly in a couple of months. You can't fault that Blizzard polish, yet the price still stings a little. But it's offset by the rest of the game being so damn good and free that there's no real cause for complaint. Naxxramas had probably a greater effect on the meta with its cards, but there was still some cool additions in this. If anything, BRM got me to take a closer look at the G&G additions because, unlike with Naxxramas, my go-to deck couldn't cut it all the time. I ended up building a Paladin Mech deck that I've been taking to ranked matches with moderate success. This is from someone who only ever played Hunter. There were a lot of fun twists on the formula throughout the campaign (the "everything costs 1" match being a highlight), but the difficulty was a little uneven. Everything up to the end was pretty easy so long as you didn't bring in the wrong deck, but that 3 stage final boss with the wipe before the final form just felt straight-up unfair. Overall, though, it was a fun little diversion from Ranked and Arena and I'm eager to get back to tweaking my decks to leverage the new cards.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow on Wii U. I really enjoyed this but it was a little short and had a couple of huge difficulty spikes. I'll have to play Harmony of Dissonance now as I didn't realise that came first although it's not as though the Castlevania series really has much overall continuity, they all seem to be just Dracula resurrecting in a different period of time :D 7/10

Shovel Knight on PS4. I finished the standard game mode finding all the power ups and doing as far as I can tell all the side quests and I rather enjoyed this, outside of NG+ it was nowhere near as difficult as I thought it might be. 8/10

Child of Light - 8/10.

Got this for free on Xbox Live. Very glad I gave it a go as it's lovely game, with lots of charm and very interesting turn-based combat mechanics.

There are two difficulties, which essentially boil down to easy and pro. With hindsight, I should have gone with the harder difficulty as it might have made the combat even more interesting by forcing me to consider my tactics beyond attack-attack-attack which you can sometimes get away with.

Nevertheless, it's an interesting game and a very welcome break from the testosterone-fuelled world of mainstream gaming.

Did you use save states? I'm tempted to give this a go for the first time since I was about 8.

Broken Age (1&2)

To be brutally honest, the first half of this game felt like an introduction and I was hoping for something more in the second. Unfortunately, if anything part II does not live up to the promise of part I. It simply retreads the same places and characters we saw in the first half with some new puzzles, most of which are fairly simple. Worse, some of the puzzles suffer from that old Lucas hang up of having very obscure solutions for no reason (you come up with a solution but apparently its the wrong one; the real solution is something that probably made sense to the devs at the time in their own head). It doesn't help that the world feels more shallow than older point and clicks as there is no option to look and hear character narrative on different aspects of the world. Narratively the story fails to delivery, mainly because the two threads and lead characters are never properly brought together until the very final moments of the game, which then ends abruptly in a way that seems suspiciously rushed. There are also several plot threads left hanging which lead me to believe the finished game does not come close to fulfilling the grand vision of its creators.

6/10 - If nothing else it looks beautiful and there is some good voice acting, with some of the humour you expect from Double Fine. It doesn't change the fact that there are new adventure games on the block that run rings around this effort. Schafer and friends are supposed to be the old masters and I was expecting something more from a game with that kind of pedigree.

Golden Axe Warrior (Master System) 8/10
- It's basically Legend of Zelda clone for Master System, but I really like it. Actually has good story (even if little, but it's still more than Zelda on NES!), it doesn't feel completely empty (there's villages and such) and it had nice, fun challenge. The downside being boss fights aren't really interesting, the items aren't great as Zelda's and the last boss is possibly easiest because you can exploit him and he is basically same as very first boss... Either way, well worth a play through, and I'll want to replay this again sometime in future.

The Incredible Hulk (Master System) 6/10
- Not sure why people seem to like it, so I gave it another chance. Turns out it's not so bad, except it doesn't really feel Hulk-y. Most of time I've been pretty much running away from enemies because it's more harm than good fighting the enemies, and Banner bits seem... pointless. Then again I've read through the guide and there seems to be more to it, although with only two buttons (and unable to pause too!) it's bit harder to do the moves. Still, it looks nice, Hulk does really look like Hulk, I've recognised some of the bosses and it's decent platformer. Just don't see why it's one of expensive Master System games out there, no way am I going to get my own copy.

Game 26: Broken Age Act 2
Image
This was not how I expected them to follow up Act 1. Essentially a retread of the same environments of the first act, but from the other character's perspective, the focus here was more on throwing puzzles at you in an environment full of familiar faces. I liked seeing all the cast again, because they were all great, but the increased focus on puzzling seemed a little reactionary to the criticisms that the first half was too easy. And when I have to walk the whole way back to the beach from Meriloft because I didn't have the right knot diagram with me, I was experiencing two emotions the first act never evoked: frustration and anger. Also, while the first act could be done basically one character at a time, this required you to keep their progress in sync at certain checkpoints, with no indication that you should switch over and get the other person caught up. All the stuff it did great in the first act, it continued to do great here. The dialogue and characterisation are all fantastic and it looks great. It just has some ugly little additions (plus one adorable one in the safety hexa-gal). It's still a sweet game, and the little closure sketches in the credits left me smiling and content, after all the frustrations that came before.

This was one gorgeous, fun game. The watercolour visuals and twee setup mask what is actually a difficult and often brutal game. The checkpointing system is similar to that seen in They Bleed Pixels, which I thought was great, but having to manually trigger it with a button press rather than simply standing still meant you get the lesson to do it all the time beaten into you by long, repeated sections. The ability levelling system was a nice addition to the regular metroidvania template, and because upgrades become few and far between in the second half, much time was spent contemplating which would help me *more* from the three choices I had. Unfortunately, though, there were some things that let the experience down. No teleport or quick-travel was a glaring omission, and the checkpointing system should really have restored health when you died. On more than one occasion, I was stuck in a dangerous area because of an ill-thought-out checkpoint that I had no way to undo. The framerate dips when things got hectic tarnished the otherwise impeccable presentation, and every single escape sequence ruined the pace when it should have boosted it. It doesn't control as well as something like Guacamelee, but if you've got an Xbox One or a decent PC, you seriously must play this game.

Punch-Out!! (NES) 8/10 A classic, though Mr.Dream is a real jerk.
Zelda II The Adventures of Link 6/10 Played this through for the second time this year, and unlike the original, I didn't like this as much second time round.
Baseball (Gameboy) 1/10 One of the worst games Nintendo have made, probably.

Did you enjoy it in 2004? Are you basing this 2/10 on how different it is to the original or on the whole game? Because the original was pretty darn fun if not slightly flawed.

I never played the original. My first Fable was the second one. I read a lot of comments here about how the first one is the best but for me it was easily the worst of the first three fable games.

The menus are clunky (as is fable) the interactions are strawberry floating dire. The game crashed on me so many times, and I also got stuck in the floor a fair bit

I got stuck at around the half way point because I hadnt levelled up my character in the 'correct' way

The frame rate was absolutely atrocious too

The map was gooseberry fool, the answer was to download the smartglass app on my phone which didn't work very well at all

There's no way the interactions are worse than the third where you get a choice of 2-3 at random that completely spoil the system perfected in 2.

Shadow Warrior (One)

6 out of 10

Solid enough budget game that was a nice hark back to the old school feeling FPS of the late 90s, but it had the problems along with the charms. Getting lost in a level looking for a key is not longer a fun way of extending the life of a game.
