Okami HD - 8/10

Great to play again. There's a few things that keep it from a 9.

Issun never shuts the strawberry float up, and a lot of his dialogue is just repeating things other characters said to you. It is really irritating. And the text scroll is too slow during cutscenes.

Boss rush and repeated bosses. You fight Orochi 3 times. It's a bit too much.

But yeah, wonderful game apart from that. Really holds up well visually despite being a PS2 game. And it's a wonderful homage to Japanese culture. I would love to see a modern tech Okami game.

Nuclear Throne - PC

Graphically, this must be one of the ugliest games in recent years. I am not a fan of the retro style games (i.e. minimum effort and then label as “retro”) but this takes things to a new graphics low. Bad enough that it is so unattractive, but then to lock the game at 30fps and have screen tearing on the scrolling is just downright poor and stinks of someone making this in their bedroom.

The one saving grace the game does have is that it can be good fun, initially at least. The problem is that when you die, back to the very start with nothing carrying over. You then have to spend a fair amount of time working your way back to where you got up to with nothing extra to help you. On the way you can unlock new characters but I ended up using just one as any that you unlocked didn’t really feel that they were making things easier than one of the characters available from the start.

Controls are also annoying. Use a control pad and moving and swapping weapons is easy, but targeting is less accurate than using a mouse. Use a mouse and keyboard and accuracy is improved, but moving your character, swapping weapons or picking something up is more difficult. Annoyingly you can’t remap the mouse buttons so rather than being able to assign the buttons to your weapons (you can only have 2 at any time), one is assigned to firing and the other is assigned to your character’s unique ability. Later in the game you unlock a character that can use both weapons at once so then each mouse button is assigned to the weapons, giving you a power that you should be able to assign from the outset!

I didn’t actually complete this but I did get to the final level. I was then killed with no real warning by a laser shooting down the centre of the screen which means back to the very start you go. Fun! (no, not really). I have since attempted many times to get back to the final level without success due to the game being procedurally generated meaning that things can be very difficult if you are on a “boss” level with nowhere to run and enemies hammering you at the same time. This then just becomes annoying because you feel like you died due to the randomness rather than a mistake you made.
Another minor annoyance is that you can run out of ammo which is a bit silly in something that is basically a twin stick shooter. There are options to restock, but when you are out of ammo getting to it without being able to shoot your opponents is difficult and gives yet another possibility of you dying and having to restart the game.

My final shot at the game is the price, it is too much. The game on the UK Steam site is about £9, which frankly is a joke. Fortunately someone gave me a key for free but if I had paid £9 I would feel fairly ripped off. The pricing for this should be about £3.

Guacamelee 2 - 9/10

Loved this from start to finish. I can't really decide if it is better than the first one though. It feels completely unrestrained in comparison.

Regardless, it is excellent. Great combat and platforming.

Sonic the Hedgehog ('91) - Despite enjoying Sonic Mania a fair bit, it didn't really whet my appetite for classic sonic games since I already had a not-too positive view of them. Recently though I decided to check out this game on a whim and found it finally clicked for me. The level design isn't always great but it's mostly good and sometimes very good. It's still a pretty game with a great soundtrack, and for a game of its time it has some nicely staged epic moments. Like when you chase down Robotnit at the end of Labyrinth Zone, or when he traps you near the end a remixed version of his theme plays. To my surprise, I liked this game a fair bit, and I'm looking forward to playing through the rest of the classic games.

Portal 2 - I started playing this years ago, not too long after I had completed and really enjoyed the first game, but for some reason I stopped playing it for a bit and completely forgot about it. Until a couple of days ago when I decided I should play through it as I know it's a good game. It was just a lot of fun, funny, challenging but not frustrating. Each puzzle area doesn't take longer to clear than it should. Rating: kewl.

Which version did you play? It's such a crying shame that the best ports of 1&2 are limited to mobile, those games benefit so much from widescreen alone.

Also sucks that 3 & Knuckles never got the Christian Whitehead treatment, though if you have the means I recommend playing it via the 'Sonic 3 Complete' ROM hack.

I played the Wii VC version. I have the 3DS version of Sonic 2 lined up. As it happens I had that Sonic 3 in 3DS form. Wasn't aware it was a hack.

Also I had heard the mobile versions are better and did try to play them via an Android emulator, but it wasn't the best experience.

Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon on PS4. I’ve only beaten the main story and I know there are other scenarios to play too but I’ve really enjoyed this. Controls were great and it’s got that familiar NES game look while at the same time looking better than I think any NES game could.

Although I know Ritual of the Night will be more of a Metroidvania like Symphony of the Night but this has really whetted my appetite for that game.

9/10 I might have stretched to a 10 but for a couple of frustrating moments in the last couple of levels.

Her Story

Can't really rate this. It's a gigantic headfuck. I enjoyed the piecing together of it, but I'm not sure I understood it, or if my theory is correct. I guess they left it open ended on purpose.

My theory is that the woman is suffering from a split personality disorder. There's no way they could have got away with living life like that. Someone would have found out within their childhood or tennage years.

I'll put it down as a success. Very unique experience. I usually hate games like these, but this is a very good attempt at something different.

South park - the fractured but whole 6/10

I loved the first game, so was really looking forward to this, but while the first game was largely funny all the way through, this only really hit it's stride in the last few hours, to the point where the opening felt like the entire story was missing. I think the first game benefited from having the whole town to explore, whereas here you've done that all before so it was pretty dull. It could have done with having all that cut and just been totally linear.

Absolutely loved this game when I played it a couple of years ago on iPad. Thoroughly engrossing.

3D Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Another mostly enjoyable experience which I felt flowed better than the first. Had to use save states for the special stages mind...but this way they were pretty enjoyable.

The game was mostly smooth going until some moments in Act 3 of Metropolis Zone where there were a couple of sections I found particularly difficult but not unpleasantly so. Then I found that zone's boss a bit annoying - not unreasonably difficult, but it felt like a bit of a difficulty spike when most of the bosses up until that point are very easy. Metal Sonic was fine but it felt like I was randomly getting hit when I jumped on him sometimes. I guess it must be because I'm hitting his spikes but it didn't always look that way.

Then obviously the final boss is pretty easy. Opted for the slower and more boring way to beat him for the most part because I wasn't too confident avoiding those arm spikes. But I like how with this boss and most other Sonic bosses, your skill is rewarded with beating these bosses more quickly.

Jazzem I'm guessing you probably already know this, but the Christian Whitehead version of Sonic CD at least made it to other platforms like PC, and I'm planning on moving onto that next in my series of Sonic playthroughs. Looking forward to it.

Nice one :toot: It's marvellous, a very necessary release as there wasn't an easily definitive version beforehand. The Whitehead one takes the best aspects of Mega CD + original PC ports along with some new enhancements. The Digital Foundry episode on SCD went into detail on it here, along with the other versions before that timestamp.

Also, if you're on PC use this mod to restore the amazing Engrish vocals to the intro + outro songs :P

Death of the Outsider: 9/10

What a fantastic way to finish out Dishonored (the series is on 'hiatus' according to Arkane). As I mentioned in the Currently Playing thread, the powers are so perfectly balanced, and so readily available, that I don't think any other immersive sim has given me such a feeling of absolute control over my environment whilst still feeling vulnerable. The only exception was the last level, which substituted a lot of the finesse of earlier settings with a shitload of enemies and a level where every one of them can see everything.

Narratively it's the best of the three entries. The two earlier games suffered from having a fascinating world saddled with unfortunately rote and rather dull main plotlines. This isn't the case here and it's one of the highlights of the game.

A strawberry floating treat.

West of Loathing (Switch)

An enjoyable but slight RPG. I haven't done all the side quests, but the "final scene" gives you an idea what would change in the future if you did. Combat is simplistic, in fact I never died. Inventory management is non existent, but it doesn't really matter. The writing is witty and the stick-man pencil drawn graphics are well animated and I really rather enjoyed it all.

7/10

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice on PS4. I mostly enjoyed this once I stopped playing it drunk. It looks fantastic, seemed to have a decent if slightly vague story, the perspective based puzzles were fun and I thought that section where you are virtually blind and have to rely on your other senses was a pretty clever piece of game design but (and it’s a big but) I really didn’t like the combat system in the game. I found every fight a chore and by the end just wanted it to be over.

I find it hard to score this as without the combat it would have been a good 9/10 or maybe even 10/10 but as it stands there was a good portion of this game that I just didn’t enjoy and as such I’m gonna have to go for 6/10... I will give credit however as I think the idea of hearing voices was very well done and handled far more sensitively than I would have expected.

They really did nail it with DotO! I've loved all of the Dishonored games, and pretty much anything Arkane have done, even going back to Arx Fatalis, but this and Prey are probably my highlights from them.

I agree that the balance of powers is almost perfect in this, the fact that Meagan gets some of the most interesting powers and that they don't punish you as much for actually using them this time is a bonus. I think they still fall down somewhat on story and execution of a decent plot, but it's much better than it was in the two main games, funnily enough I think the same was true of the D1 DLC - Knife of Dunwall and Brigmore Witches were both more satisfying than the main game.

Slightly wary about what we might see next from Arkane, Raphael Colantonio left them recently and he has been a key component in all of their games to date, but I'm still going to be interested to see what they are up to.

My continuing love of the Dishonored series is one of the reasons I came down so harshly on Prey. Everything I loved about those games was, I feel, missing from that game, even if the mechanical structures behind it all were present and correct. Once I get the time* I really do need to go back to Prey, push on through the terrible opening hours and see if I can get anything at all from it.

Re: Arkane, they've been on something of a hiring spree recently, so I'm expecting big things from them. Also, a friend is mates with one of the design directors and has promised to introduce me, so I'll put the squeeze on.

*he says, having just restarted Dishonored 2.
