Call of Duty WWII.

Nothing major to report other than WWII is typical of any CoD campaign, but that said I still enjoyed it.

7/10

OneChanBara Z2 Chaos.

Unashamed tits and ass aside I really like this brawler. It has a scarily deep combo system once you get into the game and start upgrading. Finished the main story twice now on normal and hard difficulty and completed about 50% of the missions. A hugely playable game that has quickly become one of my favourites.

Batman - The Telltale Series (in before free on PSN+ :x )

This was fairly short (felt like about 5-6 hours for the 5 chapters). A nice story to watch but it really doesn't feel like I'm changing the outcome. I'm guessing that if I played through this again and made different decisions, all the key points of the story would remain unchanged. Not sure how this plays on other platforms (played this on PS4) but technically, it is not very accomplished. Have to wonder whether someone sat down, tested it and thought "it doesn't matter if the game pauses to load mid action sequence or if we just end a sequence abruptly with some loading rather than a smooth transition between one scene and the next".

Be interested to know if only I experienced this but it felt that in a number of places that the game was reacting without me (i.e. actions were happening prior to me completing the sequence on the controller) or the game was simply not responding, resulting in death even though I know I responded in time. This just served to further dispel the illusion that I was interacting with the game and instead just giving me something to watch rather than participate with.

On the whole enjoyable story so if you want to sit back and enjoy the ride, little to complain about. If you were looking for some gaming at the same time, this might not be for you.

That's par for the course for Telltale games isn't it, the illusion of actually making decisions that change the outcome?

The gameplay is great and the story is well worth keeping up with as it's interesting and fleshes out the world nicely.
I can't give it anything but a 10  .

Yep, a really good game. We'll, they both are with Last Lights' more gun-ho approach working well to up the tempo. Bought the bundle last year in the Steam sale for a pittance with every intention of playing through both again this year.

Castle of Illusion (360) - 7/10

+ Looks very nice
+ Some decent music
+ Enjoyable levels
+ Not overly long, and therefore doesn't wear out its welcome

- Not much challenge
- A few repetitive ideas...some more variety would've been nice
- Another level might have been good - felt cheap getting two gemstones in one stage, almost like they couldn't be arsed with another level

Blitzed through this in a couple of hours. Was enjoyable while it lasted though and I didn't really feel like it was lacking anything too important. Short but enjoyable.

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings (PC)

I really enjoyed this despite the simplification of the combat stances from the first game and the sense that you really should have read the books before starting to know who/what all the kings, kingdoms and important events are. I'm looking forward to 3 and am glad i went through the first two as they provide quite a bit of context and set up some of the characters for it, but will probably have a bit of a break from the series before diving in.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow

Not without its flaws, but enjoyable nonetheless.

6/10

Have the sequel to begin at some point, but other games to play first.

Jak 2 (PS3)

+When it's fun, it's *fun*
+Some genuinely great sections
+Great character art
+The story is pretty good
+Runs well on PS3, I don't see any frameskip drops
+Subtitles (first game didn't have any)

-...but no subtitles for in-game dialog
- Poor checkpoints
- Shite camera
- Some sections are really awful
- Difficulty spikes all over; very unforgiving
- Boring home hub
- Poor vehicle controls
- No aiming, only four weapons, none of them are really special. Just your standard weapons.
- No in-game list/tracker for collectibles

Solid 7

Danganronpa 2 (Vita) 8.

This got off to a shaky start with me as I was not particularly taken with the first trial. Thankfully I found the rest of them to be excellent with all the trust's and turns I would hope for.
The new games in the trials were all great and I found the new way that you navigate the map to be a massive quality of life improvement.
So yeah, really glad I stuck with it after a bumpy first few hours. Looking forward to playing the third one now.

Glad I'm not the only one who loves the weird trial mini games, they tend to get a lot of flack. Logic Dive felt like a lost Sonic bonus stage

They got flack? I'm surprised, they seemed to mix the gameplay up nicely. I guess for someone who was strongly into the VN aspect it might be a touch to jarring, but personally it made things feel fresher for longer.
And yeah, i liked the Logic Drive sections.

Tales From the Borderlands - 8.5/10. Finished it earlier this afternoon. Its not perfect, of course but Telltale’s skeleton crew did a magnificent job on this. Given the sales it’s unlikely but I’d love a second season.

Almost gret when I thought Loader Bot had copped it.

Letter Quest Remastered (Switch): I have beat the main campaign on the "first star" category. There are 30 such stages and it took me around nine hours. It's a Scrabble RPG where you build words to defeat monsters, whist also upgrading your sword, clothing and spells.

I thoroughly enjoyed it; presentation is basic but decent (the music tracks are terrific) and the gameplay is marvelous for word puzzle fans. There is a slight bug with the joy-con analog stick - the game is slow to react to input - but I used the touchscreen format throughout and that worked very well. I picked the game up in an eShop sale for around £7 and I feel I have got good value.

The game hasn't actually ended as there are various harder ways of re-tackling the stages but I am happy to give it a break at this point for now!

Titanfall 2.

+ Thought it controlled really well. Liked the variation in the levels. All the weapons were fun to use, never really got to "know" any of them though.

- Wasn't much of a challenge. Characters a bit bland. Levels probably could have made better use of the wall running and didn't seem big enough in scope for using Titans - I guess it's primarily a multi-player game with a campaign tacked on.

Overall - A good little FPS with bags of potential. 7/10.

Totally agree, I thought the single player was good but not any better than CoD. The multiplayer though...

It was light years ahead of CoD campaigns. Have you played CoD WW2? It's a joke compared to TF2. Nothing in any CoD can compare to the time travel mission in TF2

No I haven't played WW2. I enjoyed IW just as much as TF2, I'm probably being a bit harsh but the hype around this was pretty crazy and it just didn't meet those expectations for me.

I think Titanfall 2 was a smidge overrated too. It was really enjoyable, but never really amounted to more than the sum of its parts. That particular level was an obvious highpoint, it's a shame we didn't see more of that kind of inventiveness throughout the campaign.

Assassins' Creed Unity (Xbox One X) [7]

+Recreation of Ancient Egypt is unbelievable. Such an enormously pretty game. One of the best game settings in a long time. A great choice, too, with three great ancient civilisations all involved in the narrative.
+Presentation all round is top notch. Oozing with atmosphere.

-A real Frankenstein of a game with borrowed parts from Souls and Destiny that don't really gel together. Ubisoft just can't seem to nail the combat in these games. Rocksteady has got a perfect template for combat that'd suit these games so well and I just can't understand how, with Ubisoft's money and clout, they can't get this core aspect of the game correct. A lumbering Souls-lite combat system just seems at odds with the 'Assassins' theme. Also, what's the point having 100s of ostensibly identical but statistically different weapons in a game like this? It takes the fun out of uncovering weapons as they'll just be superseded by another, near identical one in 20 mins time...
-Overly-long and needlessly grindy. I really dislike Ubisoft's use of timesaver packs and materials DLC. Balance the game correctly so that I get the top amour etc. without having to play for days. They took a year-off to rejig the formula. I was really hoping that they would cut putting armour sets behind a pay wall on Day 1 and the grind makes up-levelling the basic set a real chore.
-Although the map is beautiful, there are great swathes of it that are desert (well, duh). Don't see the point of putting them into a 'game' though. I lost an evening riding around the desert hoping there would be more things of interest in them (there are some things, I know, but riding on a digital horse for 20mins just to find out that there's nothing on interest in a location really irks me).
-
Story didn't amount to much. The interplay between Bayek and Aya is interesting and melancholic - it was interesting to see how they both embodied different aspects of what would later be the Creed but there wasn't nearly enough First Civilisation stuff. This was supposed to be an origins story but, when Bayak discovers a First Civilisation tomb under one of the pyramids, it hardly changes the narrative. It's still largely a revenge story and only a couple of characters were interested by the First Civilisation tombs and tech which seemed a little strange. A bit of a missed opportunity and certainly a bit misleading to call this a true origin story.
