Broforce

Got somewhat addicted to this for a few days. A lot of fun. The constant change of heroes and interactive level design mean you always have to be on your toes. But this can also make it frustrating as you need to learn how how each character works. Death is sudden and often unpredictable as a chain of events explode out of control around you but good checkpointing means its never that punishing. It can be frustrating to reach certain fights or situations with a hero thats move set makes it harder. A few times in boss fights I might as well have just died. Its fast and bloody and the campaign asks you to try new things. Till towards the end when I found it started to run out of gas. It just became more and more a case of things exploding at you. Exploding things that spawn things that explode as they explode as things that charge/fly at you and explode. Its exhilarating when it comes together but when it doesn't click it can be rather tedious case of dying over and over. A few of the boss fights could do with removing an element or two. There are some cool missions designed for specific characters and I really like these. Wish every hero had one. I 100% then normal campaign then had a play about with the hard one. That day I 100% that to. Its certainly harder but in a way that felt fair and being able to replay levels with a bit more knowledge of both the level and heroes was cool. But at points the random elements were still both a blessing and a curse.

Was a little buggy from time to time. Music stopped in boss fights and sometimes I did things I'm not sure I was suppose to. Mainly in boss fights. The humour and little gameplay touches involving the various versions of action heroes is wonderful even if I don't know who some are. A shame a few feel more useless then others, at least in very specific situations.

Looking forward to trying this online with Pedz and Jazzem at somepoint. strawberry float knows how chaotic it will be. Cheers Pedz.

Yakuza 0 on PS4. This is a strong contender for the best game I’ve played all year. I finished it after about 115 hours with just over 90% completion and not once did I get bored. Whether it was the ever twisting main plot or some silly side quest like helping shoot a music video or helping a dominatrix learn how punish people there was seldom a dull moment. From the lengthy real estate sub plot to the hostess club to the plethora of other distractions there was always something to do. The combat in the game was absolute joy too with some of the heat actions making me genuinely laugh out loud.

Being a newcomer to the series I think this was the perfect starting point and while on the one hand I want to crack straight on with Kiwami next I can possibly see fatigue setting in so I think I’ll leave it for now besides I still have a few skills left to learn and the Amons to defeat :dread:

10/10 an absolute joy to play from start to finish!

American McGee’s Alice on PS3. The best words I can think of to describe this are “not awful”. The art style and story are great, the Chris Vrenna soundtrack is great but the game itself is kind of a janky mess. Who seriously thought it was a good idea to make a console style platform game on PC in the Quake 3 engine and lumber it with FPS controls? Had this been built from the ground up as a console game with a competent control scheme it has the potential to have been a great game. Playing it now I can’t understand how it reviewed so well at the time, the only negative review I’ve seen was from Edge who gave it 4/10... I don’t think it was quite that bad so I’m giving it 5/10

I really loved that game back in the day.

Still strawberry floating great. I love this game. Only bad thing about it is the jerky load screens.

Resident Evil 7 (PS4). Not going to score this yet as I have mixed thoughts about it. Putting to one side the annoying overly long loading and one boss fight, I was really enjoying this until I got to about the last quarter of the game. When the game moved to the boat setting my interest level dropped, I wish they had made the house area bigger. It sort of improved after that but there wasn't a great deal more to come.

...and then the 2nd big problem, the game felt quite short. On the plus side by the time I get to the end of most games I am just playing them for the sake of completion, but for this, I wanted a bit more. I did play this over about 2 weeks, but total play time was only about 10 hours which feels quite short. I am interested in the DLC but might sell this off and then re-buy on the PC as I think it might get quite cheap (saw RE7 on CD Keys for just over £10 a week or so back).

Virtues Last Reward (3ds)

As a lover of 999 this was unsurprisingly brilliant. Also thought the 3D worked well on it and technically it was really impressive. A few too many repetitive and frustrating puzzles near the end and some rather annoying crashes in some of the escape rooms lose it a couple of points. 8

Destiny 2.

Well, I finished the main story at a least. As an overall game I thought it was it's 'okay'. Went from "Wow, this is awesome" to "yeah, I'm bored now" in quite a quick amount of time. I did enjoy a few games with friends, but generally I'd rather be playing something else entirely.

Weapons pack a real punch, great sound, and it has moments where it's visually breathtaking, but it's not a keeper. Destiny 2 is very throw-away. Okay in short bursts, but outside of the grind and a few laughs with friends there was really nothing to keep me coming back.

6/10

Forza Motorsport 7.

Not so much finished, but finished with.

A series of very samey, frankly dull, overtaking challenges wrapped up in glorious eye candy. Collectahon racing games just don't appeal to me anymore. FM7 feels so flat, dated even, where the focus is not on the racing itself, but in how much stuff you can unlock before proceeding to the next series of tedious overtaking challenges and novelty races. Genuinely had to stifle a yawn a few times while playing FM7.

Alice: Madness Returns on PS3. I really enjoyed this for the most part, there were some minor niggles such as the slightly wonky enemy lock on (seriously how hard is it to use the Z targeting system from Ocarina?) but nothing that stopped me from enjoying the game as a whole. There's a relatively easy platinum trophy to be had too.

Destiny 2 (Xbox One) [8]

+Design in this game is awesome. They've got some talented people at Bungie and I just love some of the locales in this (Titan is my favourite as I love high beautifully-gross the Hive nests are). The design of the armour sets and guns is equally impressive. They've just done a brilliant job of creating an interesting world to play in.
+The sound work and music in this is also really top notch. One of those soundtracks that I would like to own. The stripped-back cello tracks are particularly cool.
+Moment-to-moment gameplay is brilliant. It just feels so tactile and right. It gives me a similar feedback loop I had playing Halo:CE back in the day.
+The end/meta game in this is far better that Destiny 1. The "Milestones" really help to keep you on track. It's better, but not perfect.
+I'm not sure what the system was in Destiny 1, but I really like the weekly refresh with a new set of challenges. I know a lot of it rehashes the same ground, but, as these weekly Milestones are often the quickest way to earn new powerful armour and guns, it does feel like a new little bonus every week!

-There really should be a better system of matchmaking for Nightfall and Raid. I have to use the "Looking for Groups" Xbox Live feature to get a group and they often quit.
-The first Raid is beautiful but too daunting for a (relative) new-comer. I also don't want to have to watch YouTube videos to explain how to "solve" aspects of a level in Destiny. I want to work as a team to shoot things. It feels a little bit like work, to me. The fact that it also takes several hours to complete when starting afresh is also a little off-putting. I know it adds to the mythos of the Raid but I would rather it were a little simpler and communication was encouraged through slightly, less complex puzzles.
-End game progress is much better and clearer in this game but I would have liked some armour sets to be a little easier to attain. God knows how many Titan / IO / EDZ / Nessus coins I've acquired but I haven't got a full armour set from any vendor (the set on from IO will be mine at some point).

Enslaved : Pigsy Perfect 10

Going to give this DLC a perfect zero as the DLC (from UK PSN store) doesn’t work with my region 2 Blu-ray Disc.

I’m not sure whose strawberry float up this is (either SCEE or whatever you call yourselves now or Ninja Theory) but one of thems strawberry floated up.

Give yo selfs a pat on the back yo.

After going back to an earlier save so I can see the 2nd ending in Resident Evil 7, I'm done with the game and ready to rate it. My opinion hasn't changed though, enjoyable for the first 2/3s but then dropped in enjoyment around the boat sections before improving towards the finale. If I'd paid £40 for this I would be very disappointed by the length of it and even at £17 I feel it is too short. The DLC should have been in the game from the start and although I'd like to play it, I'm not forking out £4.99 for banned footage 1 and £7.99 for banned footage 2 (this is the sale price so probably be a while before it goes below this). There is supposed to be something free coming in December, hopefully a full chapter.

More enjoyable than the last couple of REs, but short of RE4's greatness.

Am I the only one that took a while to realise the colouring of the text on the box makes 7 in Roman numerals?

Rather fittingly, 7

Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens on PS3. I really enjoyed this but I have been a fan of the Lego games ever since the original Lego Star Wars back on GameCube. I hadn’t played one in a while so there seem to have been a few big changes here over the ones I have played most notably a wider range of character abilities but not every change is for the better. I think there was far too much post game busy work, nearly 3/4 of the game is just mopping up collectibles after beating the main campaign. I know there has always been the characters, minikits and red bricks but here there are also 35 Carbonite bricks and 250 gold bricks to find so I think it’s getting a bit silly.

In any case it’s a very fun game with a very easy platinum trophy to be had if that’s your bag.

Starfox 3D (3ds).

Fun little game to play between more other time consuming titles. Impressive graphics and audio and really good use of 3D. Found myself getting real bad cramps in my right hand after about 30 minutes playtime on my XL (gyro controls ease this but never feel entirely natural). These cramps at least allowed me to eke out a few more days game time, as the whole thing only took 3 and a half hours! That was clearing both the easy and hard routes. Its incredibly easy - i only lost 3 lives in the entire hard run (leaving me with 8 in reserve). The battle mode looks fun though, and i could see someone getting a few more hours out of that if they were trying to justify the purchased.

The Sexy Brutale
I really enjoyed this. A Groundhog Day murder mystery, with some clever puzzles at times, and delightful style and music. I loved snooping about, eavesdropping and working out how to prevent each guest’s murder.
Recommended.

Golf Story (NS)

Amazing. I loved just about every minute of this. Funny, varied and with lovely music and graphics that gave me a warm feeling like the games of yesteryear. I have enjoyed casual golf games all my life (despite having no love for the real.... sport). This felt like a combination of all the best aspects.
There were a few (we’ll documented) technical glitches, but nothing that called for more then a restart (3 times in my 20 hour play through). The last tournament was a real adrenaline rush as well, and I actually punched the air upon clearing it (always a good sign).

For anyone who’s interest was captured by this title, I urge you to check it out. A great game for a great price.
