The Swapper.

Well wasn't this a lovely surprise. A game I picked up in some sort of cheap bundle pack, which I only started due to the easy achievements. Knew absolutely nothing about it. Turns out it's a really accomplished Metroidvania with some nifty Portal style puzzles in each room. Super fun, and the story and atmosphere were spot on. Highly recommended.

8/10.

My target for this year was to complete Far Cry 2, Far Cry 3 and Far Cry 4 (and Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon if there was time).

I have just managed to complete Far Cry 2 (Ubisoft Montreal, Ubisoft – 2008). (I did sink more than 90 hours into completing Breath of the Wild in the meantime).

This was one of the most frustrating games I've played in recent years. The admittedly impressive open world is dotted with checkpoints you need to drive through. Clearing these checkpoints is essentially pointless, because the enemies immediately respawn. All the enemies have pinpoint sight and hearing, able to hit you anywhere before you've even seen them. You have to return to a campsite to save, which forces you retrace your steps after you die for the umpteenth time.

Celer rating: Poor

Now, on to Far Cry 3.

Abzu - PC

Its underwater Journey - lovely visual and sound design, a couple of hours long and tells an abstract story of a society laid low by their own technological development. I guess my experience was spoiled by having played Journey and the like, but while this was nice to look at and fun to swim around without an annoying breath meter all the time, I was left with a sense of "huh, that's that then" rather than gushing over it like most of the games media did when it came out. I got it as part of a humble bundle, but I'm conflicted over the price to gameplay ratio. Sure there are collectables and achievements to go back for if you're so inclined, but I'd have been a bit miffed if I'd paid £16 or so, and I bought Inside on release for a similar amount and didn't feel short-changed by that equally brief and linear experience.

I definitely recommend experiencing Abzu, however perhaps wait for a sale.

Dishonoured 2 (corvo no kills) 7/10

Very enjoyable and open ended for exploration if difficulty was too erratic and of all the powers / tools you get, they are mostly unused if you go for no kill run. Once you upgrade time stop to full you don't need anything else. Story was pretty weak though.

Just started a murder streak (no alert) run with Emily and already it's much more enjoyable due to a greater variety of useful skills and abilities. Will look forward to the domino shenanigans!

Titanfall 2 - PS4 (singleplayer)

I borrowed this because I had heard good things about the campaign but didn't care about thr multiplayer one bit. Most of those good things were accurate; it takes a while to get going but when it does each level offers a new mechanic or setting but doesn't overuse them or hang on to them past their necessity, saving it from the drudgery of other shooty-bang-bang singleplayer outings.

The actual story is pretty generic and its hard to care about the broader universe but it was fun enough to play that it didn't matter; going from stompy titan fights to leaping around like a murder acrobat was great and I think Titanfall certainly has one of the best fps movement systems going. The major plot twists were inevitable and obvious from the get-go but everything else made up for it.

8/10.

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood - 9/10

Absolutely bloody brilliant! For me this is exactly what an FPS should be, bombastic, all guns blazing action with big weapons and even bigger enemies. An absolute blast to play through.

Bye Bye Boxboy -3DS
Ive had this one on the backburner for a while, been doing a couple of puzzles at a time over the last few months and its a wonderful game. It builds nicely on what the first two did and rounds off the trilogy in a pretty satisfying way. My worry with this one was it was going to feel stale or a bit stretched, this is the 3rd time weve seen the box producing shenanigans after all, but theres enough fresh content and interesting twists here to make things feel just as satisfying as they did in the original.

Boxboy is great and everyone should play all of the Boxboy games. *****

I managed to find the will power to finish off Castlevania : Lords Of Shadow.

Oh where do I start with this game. :(
You know things are bad when Patrick Stewart sounds as bored as I was bored out of my skull as I was feeling playing this.

Let's start with chapter 2.
9 strawberry floating levels where strawberry float all happens to progress the story much. Level after strawberry floating level of running into a room, bitch slapping some Torie goblins, solving a puzzle, rinse & repeat. That's practically the whole game.

Some of the bosses where... well... climb up the big bastard & hit his massive weak spot for maxim damage. 2 colossus. Not one but two I can't roll my eyes hard enough. One was more than enough but nope give me 2

Then there was this boney bitch ass dragon thing near the end. Took a while to sit his ass down.

The frame rate : I don't know of it was just poor optimisation but it was really rough & all over the place like a cat throwing up a hair ball.

Stuff I did like: the music was pretty epic gooseberry fool at points, so well done there. The mini bosses where good.

Didn't like the ending, what a cop out that was. If you want to know how it went down then buy the DLC
RIGHT NOW!!1!1!!1!!!!!1!!!1!! on PSN BABY! WOoOoOo! (seems I have a code for it)

This game is gonna get a 2/5 yo

Thank Frank Crash Bandicoot is out in a few days

I liked that game on release, but playing through the PC version last year was a real eye opener. It wasn't as good as I remembered it being. The last boss is absolutely awful.

Patrick Stewart is so incredibly cheesy in it as well.

It's one of those games where if it wasn't called Castlevania, it would have been written off and forgotten forever. It's one of the worst games I played last gen. A genuinely hateful experience. That strawberry floating music box level, Jesus Christ

I dunno, most people I speak to who are Castlevania fans, hate Castlevania on 360 as it isn't at all Castlevania. Fans of the series see it as a gooseberry fool version of God of War.

I cannot figure out why I liked it so much on a first playthrough. I chock it up to being younger, more naive and having more time than I knew what to do with.

I still feel like elements of it are good, but it doesn't come together in a very cohesive fashion. I don't think it's as much as a disaster as Mirror of Fate though.

I'm sceptical about the new Metroid coming from these guys.

This makes no sense to me.

It wasn't perfect but I loved that game at the time. The snow levels captured Castlevania to a tee.

Better than GOW3, there I said it.

Strangely it all went down hill for Mercury Steam from there, maybe there was no Kojima influence like the first. I hopefully Nintendo have got MS on a tight leash.

I really enjoyed Lords of Shadow apart from when it autosaved at the start of the werewolf boss fight with me on around zero health. The DLC was gooseberry fool though.

Maybe try and play it now. Its a legitimately bad game. The only Kojima influence is they used Fox engine and that's about it. Its a 5/10 game at absolute best.

Just finished Hotline Miami 2. It's not as good as the first game but mainly because it's more of an update rather than a true sequel. The game works because each level is fairly short and easy to reset and the tension mounts as you get closer to completing a level as any small mistake can kill you.

9/10
