Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition (PC)

Although I do like third person type games, for some reason I’ve never been a big fan of the GTA games. So to play one and enjoy it almost all the way through is fairly rare for me. Maybe it is the setting (the streets of Hong Kong), your character (an undercover detective) or the story (infiltrating a triad gang).

Or maybe it is just because this does everything well – a main story as part of the triad, a separate number of optional missions relating to police work, loads of side quests and loads of races. Meeting certain characters adds them to your mobile and calling them up during the game gives you the option of more side quests. Then we have collectables (one type is a set of statues with each one collected allowing you to learn a new fighting skill) and rather than just one or two types of puzzle (such as picking locks), this has picking locks, hacking cameras, safe type combination locks, tuning in to frequencies and triangulating phone positions – five different types of puzzle to stop things becoming too repetitive.

Unlike GTA, this games is more fighting based (because Everyone Loves Kung-Fu Fighting) which is enjoyable and there are a few missions where you can get your hands on guns to spice things up. If you do like your guns, look out for a special set of missions around a prototype car – I’ll say no more.

The Definitive version comes with two extra episodes, the first an attempt to add zombies (which now seems absolutely necessary in every game, Z-Tetris awaits) but here it is more of a supernatural twist and the second is where you are a uniformed cop dealing with a mad bomber trying to end the world on new year’s eve.

Unfortunately neither are that great and only require a couple of hours to complete. Whilst overall the graphics are functional, the character models can look a little dated at times but given the age of the game, not unexpected.

If you are a fan of the GTA genre, pick this up to play the best GTA game yet. If you aren’t a big fan of GTA and find this cheap, pick it up to see how good GTA could be.

spiderman 2018 (ps4)
overall rating: 8/10

Although i love spiderman, i was never a fan of the previous games, but decided to picked this one up and i'm glad i did.
The story was enjoyable and much longer than i though it would be, neither does it get repetitive as there is plenty of
variation in each mission. graphics are great, along with the animations of spiderman himself, very fluid, fast, fun as it should be and no feel of framerate drops(playing on ps4pro).
no real complaints here to be honest, wish he could swim a little faster when landing in water but that would just be nit picking. Any fan of spiderman or the marvel universe won't be disappointed.

Life is Strange: Before the Storm (PS4)

Um... really I don't know if this really can be classified as a game. It's totally an interactive novel. At least in the original LIS, you have the sense of danger, actions you have to pull off to survive or get round a situation and there's a time travel mechanic. Things that make you feel like you are playing a game.

In this... there's nothing. Just making choices, and there's no chance of death in the entire season. I do like the story, but man, the main character Chloe isn't very likeable like Max from the original.

So difficult to give this a proper score. Gamewise, there's nothing there but it's actually decent as an interactive novel.

So I can't really give this a score as a game. But I can give this a 6 for the story.

Journey (PS4)

It was okay I guess. Not quite the "breathtaking, GOTY" material I'd been led to believe. Sand surfing was fun.

Were you playing online? I feel like the numbers playing Journey are going to be so low that the experience won't be the same, even if you do play alongside someone now there is a much higher chance they aren't a first-time player

Yes, unfortunately! Of course the game is perfectly playable and good offline, but it's the way it did online multiplayer that really makes it unique and so long remembered. When playing online you will come across other individuals also playing the game. No username will appear, and there is no voice or text chat, so you are left only to interact through playing the game itself. It's a really pure and meaningful experience as you share the journey with a complete stranger, helping each other along, one or the other sometimes leading the way.

I played the game through in one sitting and played alongside two people. The first I ran into early on and we traveled for a short while before they disappeared, but I really distinctly remember first spotting them on the ruins ahead of me and racing to catch up. The second I came across shortly after and we went through the rest of the game together (and I'm pretty sure we were both playing for the first time), only for me to lose him right at the end on the mountain in the snow where I believe you always make the final ascent alone.

In the credits the game then lets you know the usernames of those you played alongside. Despite being such a restricted interaction I've never felt so connected to a random stranger, and that's primarily what I remember the game for. That fleeting togetherness.

I see. Well I've no plans to invest in another PSN subscription so my experience of Journey will have to remain as it is.

Doughnut County

Bought it after listening to the Bombcast. It's quite fun, for a simple puzzle game but it doesn't have any real challenge. It does have a quirky sense of humour but I'm not sure that's enough to make it a great value prospect. Also I felt a bit bad swallowing all those people in a giant hole in the ground.

Batman: The enemy within

It was a bit of a slow starter for me. But the last couple of episodes were amazing and it's probably the only telltale game that I've been tempted to play though for a second time as the choices you have to make actually seem to have meaningful outcomes. That said the graphics engine is really showing it's age and it would have massively helped if they had done a overhaul of the engine before starting the project. I'm kind of sad the company has basically collapsed now but maybe it's for the best judging on how poorly they treated their staff.

Agreed. One of the best telltales games. The other? Tales from the Borderlands.

Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru. Or, as I know it 'For Frog the Bell Tolls'.

8/10

Well, I'm unsure on that 8, the game here is great and you can really see it set the groundwork for Link's Awakening. The combat is very different to the Zelda series in that it's kinda scripted, in that you walk into an enemy and you and it both auto-attack each other and depending on your attack power, speed and defence depend on the damage you give and lose. It's a cool idea, but at times I wish I could swing a sword, you know? The overworld is pretty much a Zelda game and the palace where you visit 4 times to make progress (trust me, it's not as bad as it sounds) and caves are side-scrolling and make the game a platformer, and with this changes things up a little between the overworld travelling. The humour is great and well thought up. I have to say, the script, in general, is pretty good, though I have no idea how it compares to Nintendo Japanese version as this is an English Fan Translation. I really dig the game. I definitely recommend people give it a try it's fun, the only niggle I really had was at the end, where I didn't realise something, which was daft of me and the occasional WTF DO I DO moments as I couldn't beat an enemy. I should add that the tree at the beginning is a pain, you need to get all the upgrades before you fight it and make sure you have full health. Progressing when it comes to enemies and bosses really is an item check, for want of a better phrase.

I streamed this and I uploaded it the streams to youtube. Here's the playlist with the parts, I don't expect people to look/care but thought 'why not just pop it in here?

BioShock Infinite. 6/10

I made it to the end. Whacking it down to easy meant it was less of a slog than my first playthrough but it still outstayed its welcome by several hours.

It's a truly bizarre game. Incredible production values, some genuinely interesting ideas, a dearth of imagination so incredibly absent from most AAA shooters. But it is, at its heart, a game fighting against itself, a game that so desperately wants to tell a story of quantum universality and Many Worlds Theory, of American Exceptionalism, racism, discrimination, fathers and daughters and abuse and regret and redemption. In the end its reach far exceeds its grasp and from lofty, cloudspun ideals it falls screaming to the ground in a tumble of half-baked setpieces and clumsy analogy.

It would make a cracking 3 hour game akin to Tacoma, or Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, but such a huge technological feat simply would not have been possible without the potential ROI of a mass marketed AAA shooter. So it shoehorns tired, weightless combat into a story that feels incomplete, interrupted as it is by scripted arena fights and distracting, dead-eyed NPCs. Elizabeth is a decent companion in that she manages not to annoy, but narratively she's a trope-ridden mess the game dotes on like a favoured pet, engulfing players with cues we should feel the same. But we never do, so transparent is its fawning insistence.

The end is spectacular but, like the 12 hours preceding it, fundamentally broken when viewed under any strength of dramatic scrutiny. In a way it's a fitting conclusion; an entrancing mess of half-considered contrivances just the other side of the viewer's willingness to suspend disbelief.

I'm glad it exists, it is something unique that reached for the skies and failed, but I cannot help but wish the final product had been something altogether more rapturous.

Full Throttle Remastered (PS4)

Loved this game back on the PC. Still prefer Lucasarts' other outputs like Monkey Island to this, but it's still a good fun game.

Scarily enough I still know how to finish the game fast, considering the last time I played this maybe over 25 years ago?

Played through this last year, loved it overall and it has style for days but god the action sections are pretty terrible D: They reminded me of bad late 90s java games!

Still dug it as a big LucasArts fan, so glad I finally got to it. So appreciative of these remasters making these gems accessible again

Congrats on finishing it! Looked right up my alley from the streams, though as I say I've already been meaning to get to it for the longest time as a huge Link's Awakening fan.

Turns out there's an ongoing WIP DX patch, when it's done I think that'll be my jumping on point :)

The mention of side scrolling sections make it sound quite a bit like Golvellius on the Master System, which also plays a lot like a Zelda game.

I echo the Sleeping Dogs love. Fantastic game. It just gets so much right. Love the combat and the brutal as strawberry float environmental finishers.
