I meant HD re-master, although I refer to HD remake and re-master as the same thing. Regardless, it doesn't look that great (and nor did the original re-master). Not sure there is much benefit in these simple upscaling jobs, just seems like a marketing ploy. I suppose I need to see the original and re-master running side by side to see if there is really a noticeable graphical improvement.

Machinarium (ios, specifically iPad).

Great point and click adventure game with a beautiful art design and lovely story all told through pictorial exchanges. Took me about 7 hours all told. Some great puzzles in there and no real backtracking to speak of. Highly recommend it, but not on a phone as the screens are just too small for some interactions. 8/10.

Her Story (ios)

Minimal real gameplay but very immersive and great acting. Really great acting. Quite a chilling tale which I keep thinking back on. It's rare I do that. 7/10

Firewatch (ps4)

My kind of game, heavily story based and linear in its nature. Some technical failings (frame rate specifically) and an ending that, for me, was weak compared to the rest of it stops it being the classic it could otherwise have been in my eyes. 8/10

Samorost 3 (ios)

Ok adventure game but somewhat obtuse and opaque. Quite refreshing though in its delivery of story and has some definite high points. Doesn't outstay its welcome either. 6/10.

Horizon: Zero Dawn.

9/10 although it's really a case of more than a sum of it's parts, there wasn't anything groundbreaking in there although I enjoyed it immensely.

The last part though, the fight with HADES -
ENTITY HAS ARRIVED. ENTITY WAS ANTICIPATED. AFTER WATCHING YOU FIGHT THROUGH COUNTLESS THUNDERJAWS, BEHEMOTHS, AND DEATHBRINGERS, I GIVE YOU YOUR ULTIMATE CHALLENGE...A...DEATHBRINGER.

As soon as that happened it reminded me of the bit in the Simpsons where they're going to the box factory and Bart tries to daydream something more interesting and can only come up with "...box factory". Couldn't stop giggling the entire fight.

Sonic Generations - 5/10

+ Looks very good in places.
+ Some nice pieces of music/remixes.
+ Some levels are genuinely fun.

- Controls are strawberry floating awful. Imprecise and unresponsive in 2D, and an utter, utter mess in 3D (as in all 3D Sonic games).
- Some of the challenges are actually terrible - not remotely fun. Mercifully you can get away with only completing a handful of them.
- Boss fights are rubbish and not challenging.
- The characters...strawberry float me, so annoying and stupid.

I really wanted to like this, and it starts out pretty well, but man does it go downhill fast. How they continually make Sonic games where the controls are utter piss - and clearly don't work - just beggars belief. Some sections of the game are legitimately awful as well, and I can't believe that somebody played it and thought "yeah this is good". I'm kind of tempted by Sonic Mania, but man, I've been burnt so many times by shitt Sonic games that I might just give up.

Zelda Twilight Princess HD - 9/10

My third Zelda playthrough of the year following from Link Between Worlds and Breath of the Wild. Although I have completed the original version of the game that was back at the launch of the Wii and I've tried to go back several times but been put off by the resolution so I was really looking forward to seeing if it lived up to how I remembered it.

Having completed it I could argue that it's even better than I remembered. It's obviously dated in places, the graphics look nice and sharp and there are some really nice effects (particularly in Twilight) but they are obviously quite basic and the style doesn't hold up as well as other games in the series (Wind Waker for example). I was quite impressed by the size of the overworld too, it was actually bigger than I remembered but it feels so bare and barren, especially having played Breath of the Wild so recently.

Moving on to the gameplay though and most of it holds up really well, to begin with controlling Link felt a little clunky compared to in Breath of the Wild and I was occasionally frustrated by the auto jump but for the most part I found it nice, smooth and easy to control Link. Epona was a different matter, she has the turning circle of a cruise liner and it made the horseback chases particularly difficult to play with Epona just stopping at random or me accidentally dismounting.

That's only a very small element of the game though and fortunately the rest of it holds up brilliantly. The story is well told and it has some really memorable characters, although it's very linear it doesn't fall into the trap of holding your hands at all times (the first few hours do this to a tedious degree but after that it feels a lot less restrictive) and I never found Midna to be intrusive or irritating at all. The combat is fairly easy, I rarely found myself losing more than a few hearts in battle but some of the dungeon puzzles themselves can be quite tricky at times.

It is really in the dungeons where Twilight Princess shines, they are absolutely magnificent. Filled with clever and imaginative level design and puzzles, a good amount of challenge (without ever becoming particularly obscure or frustrating) and brilliant boss designs, Snowpeak is a particular high point.

Compared to Breath of the Wild it's a very different game, for scale and scope Twilight Princess simply can't compare and as previously mentioned the open world feels bare and empty in comparison. However the dungeons are a class above the shrines and divine beasts featured in Breath of the Wild and really elevate this game to its highest points. Despite being such an old game it still plays brilliantly and I'd go as far as to say it perfects the formula created in Ocarina of Time and is comfortably amongst the best games I've ever played.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2017 - 9/10

3 months and 1 addiction later, I rate this as the best football game I've played. It's not without its own issues (some cheaty ai on highest levels and online can be a bit flaky), but just so satisfying the range / type of goals that can be scored. Plus, master league is a bit good!

The Swapper.

Well wasn't this a lovely surprise. A game I picked up in some sort of cheap bundle pack, which I only started due to the easy achievements. Knew absolutely nothing about it. Turns out it's a really accomplished Metroidvania with some nifty Portal style puzzles in each room. Super fun, and the story and atmosphere were spot on. Highly recommended.

8/10.

My target for this year was to complete Far Cry 2, Far Cry 3 and Far Cry 4 (and Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon if there was time).

I have just managed to complete Far Cry 2 (Ubisoft Montreal, Ubisoft – 2008). (I did sink more than 90 hours into completing Breath of the Wild in the meantime).

This was one of the most frustrating games I've played in recent years. The admittedly impressive open world is dotted with checkpoints you need to drive through. Clearing these checkpoints is essentially pointless, because the enemies immediately respawn. All the enemies have pinpoint sight and hearing, able to hit you anywhere before you've even seen them. You have to return to a campsite to save, which forces you retrace your steps after you die for the umpteenth time.

Celer rating: Poor

Now, on to Far Cry 3.

Abzu - PC

Its underwater Journey - lovely visual and sound design, a couple of hours long and tells an abstract story of a society laid low by their own technological development. I guess my experience was spoiled by having played Journey and the like, but while this was nice to look at and fun to swim around without an annoying breath meter all the time, I was left with a sense of "huh, that's that then" rather than gushing over it like most of the games media did when it came out. I got it as part of a humble bundle, but I'm conflicted over the price to gameplay ratio. Sure there are collectables and achievements to go back for if you're so inclined, but I'd have been a bit miffed if I'd paid £16 or so, and I bought Inside on release for a similar amount and didn't feel short-changed by that equally brief and linear experience.

I definitely recommend experiencing Abzu, however perhaps wait for a sale.

Dishonoured 2 (corvo no kills) 7/10

Very enjoyable and open ended for exploration if difficulty was too erratic and of all the powers / tools you get, they are mostly unused if you go for no kill run. Once you upgrade time stop to full you don't need anything else. Story was pretty weak though.

Just started a murder streak (no alert) run with Emily and already it's much more enjoyable due to a greater variety of useful skills and abilities. Will look forward to the domino shenanigans!

Titanfall 2 - PS4 (singleplayer)

I borrowed this because I had heard good things about the campaign but didn't care about thr multiplayer one bit. Most of those good things were accurate; it takes a while to get going but when it does each level offers a new mechanic or setting but doesn't overuse them or hang on to them past their necessity, saving it from the drudgery of other shooty-bang-bang singleplayer outings.

The actual story is pretty generic and its hard to care about the broader universe but it was fun enough to play that it didn't matter; going from stompy titan fights to leaping around like a murder acrobat was great and I think Titanfall certainly has one of the best fps movement systems going. The major plot twists were inevitable and obvious from the get-go but everything else made up for it.

8/10.

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood - 9/10

Absolutely bloody brilliant! For me this is exactly what an FPS should be, bombastic, all guns blazing action with big weapons and even bigger enemies. An absolute blast to play through.

Bye Bye Boxboy -3DS
Ive had this one on the backburner for a while, been doing a couple of puzzles at a time over the last few months and its a wonderful game. It builds nicely on what the first two did and rounds off the trilogy in a pretty satisfying way. My worry with this one was it was going to feel stale or a bit stretched, this is the 3rd time weve seen the box producing shenanigans after all, but theres enough fresh content and interesting twists here to make things feel just as satisfying as they did in the original.

Boxboy is great and everyone should play all of the Boxboy games. *****

I managed to find the will power to finish off Castlevania : Lords Of Shadow.

Oh where do I start with this game. :(
You know things are bad when Patrick Stewart sounds as bored as I was bored out of my skull as I was feeling playing this.

Let's start with chapter 2.
9 strawberry floating levels where strawberry float all happens to progress the story much. Level after strawberry floating level of running into a room, bitch slapping some Torie goblins, solving a puzzle, rinse & repeat. That's practically the whole game.

Some of the bosses where... well... climb up the big bastard & hit his massive weak spot for maxim damage. 2 colossus. Not one but two I can't roll my eyes hard enough. One was more than enough but nope give me 2

Then there was this boney bitch ass dragon thing near the end. Took a while to sit his ass down.

The frame rate : I don't know of it was just poor optimisation but it was really rough & all over the place like a cat throwing up a hair ball.

Stuff I did like: the music was pretty epic gooseberry fool at points, so well done there. The mini bosses where good.

Didn't like the ending, what a cop out that was. If you want to know how it went down then buy the DLC
RIGHT NOW!!1!1!!1!!!!!1!!!1!! on PSN BABY! WOoOoOo! (seems I have a code for it)

This game is gonna get a 2/5 yo

Thank Frank Crash Bandicoot is out in a few days

I liked that game on release, but playing through the PC version last year was a real eye opener. It wasn't as good as I remembered it being. The last boss is absolutely awful.

Patrick Stewart is so incredibly cheesy in it as well.

It's one of those games where if it wasn't called Castlevania, it would have been written off and forgotten forever. It's one of the worst games I played last gen. A genuinely hateful experience. That strawberry floating music box level, Jesus Christ

I dunno, most people I speak to who are Castlevania fans, hate Castlevania on 360 as it isn't at all Castlevania. Fans of the series see it as a gooseberry fool version of God of War.
