I didn't intentionally play two 2.5D Another World style games, but managed it somehow due to splurging randomly in the steam sale. I think overall I probably preferred Little Nightmares, but Inside is still amazing. Great puzzles, great atmosphere and art, and holy strawberry floating gooseberry fool at that last 30 minutes or so. I really, really didn't see that coming
Incredible experience

That's way up the with my favourite endings. I had no idea what was about to happen, and then that. Genuine great moment in gaming right there. I think it's incredible spoilers for it aren't more widespread, as it seems like just the kind of thing you'd have people making meme gifts out of, or Youtubers sticking it in thumbnails.

The Evil Within 2 (PC)

The original seemed to be a bit of a marmite game with a few people on here loving it and some others not seeing much in it. I'm firmly in the "love it" camp and found it really enjoyable, so much so that after completing it I started playing through it again with the weapons and abilities I had picked up in the first run through.

This 2nd game is simply not as good. Difficult to say why because they have added quite a lot to it and if you put the details of both games side by side, the 2nd would appear to be the superior game on paper. If I had to guess at reasons I would say that maybe the environment is not as good and there is less mystery, in this 2nd game you know why you are where you are and what you need to do.

Even though I was only playing at 1080p, I think that the graphics are quite impressive. It deed seem though that your character's model had more work done on it than some of the other characters you meet in the game which was a slight disappointment.

Overall though, a solid game and a solid 7.

The gun play was "off", it simply just wasnt as fun as TEW1. Its bosses werent as strawberry floated up or memorable like Laura or The Keeper were, the environment of unity was very bland too. Especially in the Marrow, which was just downright dull. For every one step forward TEW2 took, it took another 2 backwards. It improved in a lot of areas but strawberry floated up in even more. Oh and if i ever have to hear the name Lily one more time, ill strawberry floating kill someone. The scriptwiters need a slap, if you CTRL+F "Lily" in that script youll probably get about 1,000,000 results.
The first boss was pretty strawberry floated up with his extreme art.

The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD

Mostly very agreeable changes that make sense. The game generally plays faster and smoother. The slight change in the graphical style was a bit divisive but I think it still looks great and I might even prefer it. And on top of that the graphical quality is better anyway. As a consequence rough edges of character models are a bit more noticeable, but again I can live with it.

Biggest downside for me is that I don't really like the gamepad controls for this game, mainly the right analogue stick for aiming. I can't really stand gyro either. Wish Nintendo just had GC adapter support for all games and not just Smash. But being able to move while aiming in first person is cool.

8/10

That was absolutely incredible. The art, music, and atmosphere was off the charts. Gameplay was reminiscent of 90s classic Another World, so basically prepare for some frustrating 1 hit kill segments until you figure out what youre supposed to be doing, but overall it was just an absolutely strawberry floated up, macabre joy to play.

This has just gone on sale on Steam, and I'm buying based purely on you raving about it here and when you were talking about Inside.

Infamous: Second Son - PS4

This has a lot of problems but I still enjoyed it - tying abilities to good/evil level means that the first choice you make may as well lock you in to one or the other for the duration as otherwise you won't get the full suite of abilities. It suffers from the open world problem of a gradually shrinking area of stuff to do; once you clear a region of the city there is no reason to come back.

I liked the powers, which were an interesting sidestep from the usual elemental stuff and the combat was pretty crunchy. Its a pretty solid launch title that shows off the ps4 pretty well, however i'm not sure if the franchise has anywhere else to go, hence why there hasn't been one since. I'm not one to keep playing games like this after the story is done, but some sort of wave/score mode or other option to give you a reason to dip back in would be nice.

Pretty much every level in TF2 introduced a new mechanic or was based around an interesting framing device. It also includes one of the best FPS levels in years and one of the best CoD-like multiplayer components. The ratings for it were, if anything, below what they should have been

Well you must have played a different game to me then, because apart from that level there was a lot of going from A to B running on walls and shooting robots. I liked the level in the factory too, but after discovering the time travel and it totally blowing my mind I was disappointed to have to give away that power at the end of the level and never see it again. It would have been nice to build on it, see more interesting and intricate puzzles, kinda like how Portal 2 expanded on the premise of the original game.

I mean obviously. If one game set in and around an automated factory/VR training centre, with a time travel level, a platforming level and a chase level (with atmosphere bound capital-class spaceships!)* isn't enough to get you excited then I 'unno. Maybe you're playing the wrong genre. Doki Doki Literature Club is real good if you need a break from FPSs

EDIT: Eeeeh that's a bit snarkier than I meant it, but seriously. It's one of the most inventive FPSs in years. There is plenty of stuff to criticise there (story and length being two) but originality and variety are not bones to pick.

Nah, what was so great about TF2's campaign was that no mechanic outstayed its welcome. Everything left you wanting more, which is exactly what you want to achieve as a creator. It's like eating good food - if you feel satisfied you've had too much. The constant inventiveness and introduction of new ideas kept the game exciting and full of discovery from beginning to end. I think they /could/ have made a whole game around the time travel mechanic alone, and it would have been good! But keeping it to a single level was better, and was a brave creative decision.

Just for reference, here's my original review.

more heat than light wrote:Titanfall 2.

Pretty sure this is an amazing game, but I only really enjoyed it in fits and starts. It's a weird complaint, but there's too much variety. It never really settles into any kind of groove, and one particular moment of utter genius (you'll know it if you've played it, no spoilers here) is confined to one solitary level. They could (and probably should) have made that the basis of the entire game.

Still, given that I've been wholly underwhelmed with FPS games recently, this was definitely a large step in the right direction.

7/10.

I did really enjoy it, and it did leave me wanting more, which was a good sign. I wholeheartedly disagree with the notion that keeping it to one level was good design, I'm not suggesting repeating the same trick over and over, but expanding that mechanic would have made it a more enjoyable game. Are you really telling me that at the end of that level you didn't miss the ability to do that?

Honestly I didn't mind. It was a great mechanic that didn't outstay its welcome and was used to the fullest. Any longer and it would have felt like they were stretching the idea thin.*

Did you play Dishonoured 2? They do exactly the same thing there: have one level based around a central concept then it is dropped and the game moves on (they actually do this multiple times throughout the game). Nintendo do this all the time too.

*Also, if you want a game based on those mechanics, play Singularity if you haven't.

Really? You don't think there was anything else they could have done with it? Bigger, larger puzzles, combining it with other mechanics etc? I think there was plenty more mileage in the idea.

I'm definitely not advocating games resting on their laurels and sticking with one idea and repeating ad infinitum. I totally appreciate the originality in Titanfall 2 and applaud them for that, I was just disappointed that the game jumped from one thing to the next without very much flow. In a Nintendo game for instance you'll discover a new mechanic which will be introduced gradually, be expanded on and then often becomes an integral part of the game.

I haven't played Singularity but will definitely investigate, thanks for the recommendation.

I'm sure there was more stuff they could have done with it, but that was obviously not the focus of the game. Again, the same happens in Dishonoured 2 (including a very similar time travel level) and the devs there also confined it to one level. They did something original, very well, for a short section of the game. At the end of that section it felt natural and satisfying to move on for me.

If you look into how they did it (two versions of the level, one placed above the other, which the 'time travel' button warps the player between), it's also obvious how much work went into just that one section and that making a whole game around the mechanic would have turned the "sci-fi buddy movie game" into a full on time travel game. Which is obviously not the focus for the devs.

This wasn't a time travel game with mech bits, it was a mech game with a time travel bit.

I've only played the opening of Dishonored 2, this is encouraging me to get back to it (I bought it to play over a free weekend, but then my Mario Rabbids preorder arrived days early and scuppered my Dishonored plans).

I also agree on the Nintendo comparison, it's definitely what TF2 made me think of. They're very different games, but the TF2 campaign reminded me of the campaign for Splatoon

I keep feeling the need to point out that I did really enjoy the game for the most part, it was certainly a shot in the arm for a genre that had really become stale over the last few years. Certainly the fact that we're even having this debate elevates it above your Call Of Dutys or your Battlefields. Halo 5 was probably the last proper FPS I played before Titanfall 2, and that was an absolute barrel of piss.

Telltales' Walking Dead - A New Frontier

8/10

Wasn't expecting much from this as it had such a mixed bag of reviews but I really enjoyed it, thought the new cast of characters were mostly great and I enjoyed the continuation of Clementine's story on the side. Still not as good as the first series but overall I felt I enjoyed it more than the second, looking forward to Series 4 but I do hope we go back to a focus on Clementine rather than Javi. Also had no issues with glitches, broken saves or crashes which, from my experience is a rarity in Telltale Games!

I actually didn't the mechanic in question in Titanfall was that great (loved the game on the whole) it wasn't bad don't get me wrong but it was far from a jaw dropping piece of single player gaming.....I will immediately admit that has a lot to do with playing dishonoureds 2 take on the mechanic first which I felt was a lot better.
