Thankfully it's still as good as I remember it, the levels feel a little short now which I hadn't really noticed before but other than that this is about as close to perfect platform game as you're likely to see. It still looks good, controls well and introduced so much to the series like the exotic power ups and the overworld map with multiple routes. Mario 1 and 2 were good games but I think 3 is where the series became truly great 10/10

You tried the e-reader extra levels?

I've done about the first half dozen or so, I understand they get pretty effing hard.

Ahah no kidding. That's the big reason I'd consider getting the GBA VC release, always thought those levels looked neat.

The Legend of Zelda A Link Between Worlds (2/3DS) [9]

A game that is constantly inventive, charming and gently challenging. I played this game with a near-constant smile on my face. Nintendo gaming at its best... and to think this was released the same day as Super Mario 3D World... it's a crying shame that Nintendo aren't receiving the recognition and sales software of this quality deserves.

Game 15 - Ratchet and Clank [PS4] ★★★
The original Ratchet and Clank was easily my favourite of the series, so I was excited to see it rebooted. And this is probably the best reboot I've ever seen. It caters to the existing fanbase by keeping the spirit of the source material while ushering in a new crowd by updating the gameplay to more modern standards. And it looks utterly gorgeous. Gorgeous enough that I can live with it being 30fps. But it still doesn't quite deliver what I wanted it to. The original game was my favourite because of how it was structured. It was almost like a Metroidvania in that you'd often come up against areas with some weird structure or device and have no idea what you're looking at until you get the gadget later on some other planet and suddenly have a reason to revisit a ton of locations. This brings that back a little, but still shortcuts it still too much that it ends up feeling like a missed opportunity. And every change to the story or cast is pretty much for the worse. The other major change (the new weapon upgrade system) is just kind of... there. It's not fun, and doesn't require much thought. Another squandered opportunity. Still, the game overall fits like an old glove, and it's definitely one of the better titles in the series. A great effort to capture the old magic, but the original is still king.

Grand theft auto : Liberty City Stories

The lost & the damned

Not a good game.

However

The ballad of Gay Tony

Now that was good, so good it was better than IV & the game above & is this collections savour. Fun missions (apart from two which were hard just for the sake of it I think) & likeable characters. Wouldn't mind seeing more of Yusuf in future games aswell.

4/5

Back to the Future Telltale Games - 6/10

Big fan of the Trilogy. I liked the story and callbacks to the original Trilogy in this, but the gameplay was strawberry floating boring a lot of the time. The Mind Map section in the 4th Episode was pretty annoying and over long. Not to mention a game killing glitch in the 5th episode if you do something in the wrong sequence.

Nowhere near Telltale's best.

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (2010) - PC

I'd always heard that this was one of the unsung greats of NFS, and it mostly is. Decent handling and visuals and moves at a decent clip. The division between cop and racer works in a way that the Most Wanted reboot and others get wrong. Running from the police works in this game as it has a finite duration and a clear objective; get to this point and you escape. Just having to leg it until you escape their detection range is tedious as strawberry float.

On the flipside shutting down racers is pretty satisfying, although the radio chatter about giving them tickets etc seems redundant when you stop them through ramming them off the road/into serious crashes. The game does a good job of varying up the process of getting from A to B with different event types from time trials to normal races to 'hot pursuits'. These can get annoying, especially later on when you're facing an endless stream of tyre spikes, EMP blasts and aggressive AI and the races get quite long.

It has a decent car selection, however unless you really love a particular marque, there is no reason to not just use whichever Lamborghini is fastest until you unlock the Koenigseggs and then that's it.

7/10

Assassins Creed:Rogue★★★★★
For me, this is the high point in the Assassins Creed franchise, they learned all the lessons from the previous ones, included the good stuff, cut out, or at least minimised, the rubbish. Its effectively Black Flag but with snow and ice instead of sandy beaches but the gameplay is exactly the same, youre still the most bad ass murderous pirate out there and this is a good thing. I know the fighting is totally unrealistic and youre way overpowered but for me it works, I want to be this killing machine, I want to have all the power, I want a sword fight to be over in 2 button presses and be able to survive a grenade at my feet. I dont mind that the ship is literally able to turn on its axis and stop on a dime, I want it to be responsive, I dont want to learn how to sail just to get to my next killing spree.

The one big new feature that worked very well for me are the anti assassination missions, since youre not actually fighting with the Assassins now you get the chance to stop some assassinations, these are side missions, not main story missions but they have the feel of story missions in a lot of ways. The basic way they work is you find the target and then you have about 2 minutes to run around and find all the assassins sent to kill them, sometimes as many as 7 will be hiding in haybales, on rooftops and in plain sight. But you can only identify them in eagle vision which creates a bit of tension, you cant run in eagle vision, you have to walk, find your target and then figure out how to take them down, all while trying to avoid the regular guards, they dont take too kindly to you murdering people in the middle of the street after all.

Overall and unsurprisingly I love this game, its really up my street, I know its not for everyone but if you enjoyed Black Flag at all then you should give Rogue a go, now Im off to feed my masochist side and collect all the nonsense in the game.

Doom - single player campaign - PS4

Excellent, old school, pure fun and pure gameplay.

No silly puzzles or vehicle sections, no over long cut scenes. Just guns, monsters and the fun of making things go splat.

Well worth a play through and a fantastic reminder of how first person shooters used to be.

Wish my image sig would work

Game 16 - Uncharted 4 - A Thief's End [PS4] ★★★★★
One of the most immaculately-crafted games I've ever played. From the more grounded story, to the more open world areas, and increased traversal and combat options, Naughty Dog have improved this series in ways that I honestly wasn't expecting. But the most important for me is probably the most subtle. Having more than one path through a linear section is something they had throughout The Last of Us, and it really added to the world. Even something as simple as walking down a hallway can be drastically improved by offering the player a side room they can cut through, whether there's a collectible in there or not. It widens the "corridor" you're playing through so you're not bumping into the walls all the time and having your immersion ruined, and it's all over this game. It's a very powerful illusion that makes you feel like you chose the path instead of being forced along it, and for my money, is the single most important improvement they've made to the series with this entry. In terms of presentation. the story is magnificent, the voice acting peerless, and the graphics are among the greatest you'll see on any platform, thanks to its insane attention to detail and image quality. The soundtrack, however, is a bit of a disappointment. Swelling, memorable themes are swapped out for minimalist ambiance, which doesn't quite hit the mark. I don't think the whole package gels together as well as The Last of Us, but this is still a top-tier AAA game, and a fitting send-off for the series, saving the best til last.

Mad Max on PS4. I really enjoyed this, it could have done with a few more story missions and a little less padding out with repetitive side missions but overall a pretty good game. 7/10

DOOM (PC) [8]

A fantastic reimagining of the original. The gunplay is frantic and highly enjoyable. The engine zips along and the levels are sprawling and well designed. The music and the sound effects, too, are brilliant. The glory kills / chainsaw / BFG mechanic works great. Everything is designed - in the most part - to just make you want to run and gun, leap and get up close to the enemies. It's just so fluid. I played this with a controller and felt like I was playing with mouse and keyboard...

Small gripes...enemies colouring often matches the background meaning they can be hard to acquire. Wouldn't mind a patch or DLC to re-colour / make them look a little closer to the originals. Also, the upgrade system can be a little distracting creating a desire to check the map for secrets rather than just blasting through a level (which is a little at odds with the design ethos of this game). In the end, I gave up on searching for secrets and I still managed to max out pretty much everything so perhaps encouraging players to consult a map to hunt for power ups wasn't really that necessary. Also, I didn't uncover one of the classic maps which was a bit of a bummer.

But these are very small gripes... I blasted through this in little over a week; the gunplay was just so much fun.

Trine 2 PS4.

Ambitious 2d puzzle game with a verily impressive physics engine, leading to numerous ways of solving the same puzzle. Very few seem to have a specific solution. Quite open world in the way you discover things, with large sections of a level easily missed.

Jaw dropping art in places and lovely use of vivid colours. Nice narration and voice work too. A good way to spend a dozen hours or so.

Negatives include the amount of shuffling things around to get it to work on occasion and the fact you always feel like you may have broken the physics to solve some of the puzzles. That could be seen as a plus as it does prevent frustration.

Probably a riot in multiplayer but I have no friends.

7/10. Add a point if you have friends, if only because you are winning at life.

Yeah, I can see that the massive range of missions were a little repetitive, Salad, and I suspect that the approach may not appeal to everyone. For me, it became an addiction - I just had to search everywhere and collect everything! In recent years I've rarely stuck with a game but I was totally engrossed with Max.

Resident Evil (Gamecube) - 8/10

+ Looks really good (still)
+ Nice atmosphere
+ I enjoyed the puzzles/working out where to go

- Controls are annoying
- Save system is annoying
- Zombies are gooseberry fool

Enjoyed what was my first playthrough of it, but I have absolutely no inclination to go through again getting other endings or using different characters.

I enjoyed it better than Fallout 4.........

Well, not even the same type of game but a better post apocalyptic experience.

Super Ghouls N Ghosts 8/10 Great game, and I didn't find it too tough, compared to the NES original, anyway. Loses a couple of points for some pretty crummy slowdown, and a mode 7 level which made me feel a little ill.

Hitman Go on iOS - Now this is how a mobile game should be; simple but challenging gameplay, great production values, no "bag of coins" and packed full of fun. Excellent! 8/10.
