Nier: Automata (all main endings, bar 'D' and 'E') - Brilliant. I remember reading the Banjo Kazooie review in Edge. They stated how, because the game had a grounded setting, it constrained its gameplay possibilities. Something along those lines. Well, NierA really does show what is possible with games, even ones which have a grounded setting. Albeit one set in the far flung, distant future.

Horizon Zero Dawn - I had so many fears about this. The biggest one being it'd be a Ubi Lite game, as it were. And whilst its gameplay didn't break many moulds, this bettered the likes of Far Cry 4 and Watch Dogs 2 (2 recent-ish Ubi which I loved) in just about every way. Hell, it even did something FC Primal failed to do and that's make stone age style weaponry fun to strawberry float about with.
I know Guerrilla Games employed people with knowledge of these types of games; they didn't just hit out of the park with the same people who made their KZ games, but this is still an amazing first forray into the genre for them. They really should be very proud of the game.

Nier: Automata (Ending 'E') - :o :| ... :dread: :dread: :dread: ... :o   ... :!: :x :x  ( )

I've a pretty productive day today, I've finished four games.

Sonic 2 (Master System). Decent but not as good as the first Master System Sonic. It's a little choppy in places and just not as fun. 6/10

Sonic Chaos (Master System). A huge improvement over number 2 but still not as good as the first game. 7/10

Tiny Toon Adventures 2: Trouble in Wackyland (NES). Another inferior sequel. This just isn't as good as the vastly superior original, it still looks and plays really well but there are only 5 levels and one of those is a frustrating dodgems based mini game. 6/10

Akumajou Special: Boku Dracula-kun (NES). A cute Castlevania spin off where you play as Kid Dracula (I think this was released on Gameboy as Kid Dracula actually although that may be a separate game from this). This was a lot of fun, it played out like a slightly easier Castlevania which is what you'd expect I guess. One problem is that the difficulty is a bit all over the place especially the bosses, some don't even seem to be able to hit you at all but overall this was a pretty good game. 7/10

I get an extremely strong feeling of nostalgia thinking about that game, to the point where its almost upsetting.

I introduced a friend to the wonders of emulation recently and out of all the possible games he could ask me to put on for him he chose this and rather oddly European Club Soccer on Mega Drive of all things.

House of the Dead: Overkill - 5/10

+ Some funny moments
+ Can be enjoyable at times

- Weapons feel and sound weedy
- Story is tedious and uninteresting (I know you don't play these kind of games for the plot, but still)
- Overly long cut scenes
- Characters are annoying, Isaac in particular (please, just shut the strawberry float up)
- Looks atrocious and yet somehow still runs really badly with frequent slowdown

Dead Rising (PS4)

Dead Rising was one of, if not my favourite 360 games. I didn't buy a 360 until 2009 but this was one of the games I picked up with it (for about £6 2nd hand). Although initially it was frustrating (having to complete parts within a certain time limit or start the game again, having to find certain save points and dying early on to progress), I persevered and enjoyed the game hidden below the surface.

The prospect of playing the game again in what I thought was some kind of next gen HD version was enticing. Quickly though I realised that the graphical differences were minimal. Obviously I've not compared the two games side by side, but what you are playing feels just like an old game. Character models are the same and although this supposedly runs at 60fps (and to be fair, there is no slow down), screen tearing is still evident (I probably saw this 2 or 3 times throughout the game).

People you need to rescue are still as idiotic as the original (I could have saved a lot more if they actually strawberry floating came with me rather than hanging about waiting for zombies to attack so I had to go back to them) and when there are zombies as far as the eye can see, it is still annoying trying to get through them so you can get on with the actual story. Likewise, when the soldiers turn up they still take too many bullets to kill.

If you've played this on the 360, I wouldn't bother with this as I very much doubt you will remember graphical flaws from the original that you feel this improves on.

If you've not played this before, dig in, but just expect a last gen game - old character models and controls (particularly aiming with a gun) which was pretty dodgy almost 10 years ago but unforgivable now.

Played this before? 6

Never played Dead Rising? 7.5

Although when I first played this I thought it was great, having played Dead Rising 3 recently on the PC, I would say that is the better game.

Yes?

Absolute stupid dog gooseberry fool. I'm actually angry at myself for wasting 12 hours of my life finishing it. I swear the reboot was really good, I remember really enjoying it. This didn't seem to be drastically different from that game but I absolutely hated this.

My thoughts exactly, the game constantly trying to make me care about characters I found detestable was tiring.

Whoever's doing Lara's voice these days needs throwing in acid.

Crash Bandicoot for PS1 via PS3. I've beaten this before but not for a long time. It's a pretty fun platformer although it can be very frustrating at times particularly when going for 100% completion.

7/10

Does that stuff really spoil the game for you? It was easily my favourite third person action game only bettered by Uncharted 4.

It did for me. It felt like Uncharted but with none of the levity; Lara is this super-serious mopey misery guts who constantly goes "I can do this"/"I've got no choice" in a breathy, super-serious tone. Every character is unlikeable and I only became even slightly invested in the plot when I mentally re-framed it as part of the Assassin's Creed universe (Trinity=Templars, the ancient gooseberry fool is Precursor tech, that kind of thing). Lara just makes things worse wherever she goes, visiting ancient tombs and marvelling at their construction before destroying/flooding them and/or nicking everything not nailed down. This goes further through the ludo-narrative dissonance in the first game, that she's this desperate survivor struggling against the odds yet I can headshot a platoon of heavily armed soldiers like its no big deal.

It's inevitably going to be compared to Uncharted 4, and by comparison it just felt clunky.

Fair enough if that bothers you but that stuff is in every computer game.

Uncharted 4 is better but not by much. Obviously it wasn't a comparison when Tomb Raider was released but it was in a different league to UC 1-3.

Although I agree that the story and characters were infuriatingly bad it was the collectathon nature of the game that irked me more than anything. I play games to be entertained, not to hoover up an almost endless amount of pointless trinkets that have been marked on a map for the sole point of dragging out proceedings. I remember really enjoying the reboot but Rise of has put me off ever replaying it just in case I'm remembering it wrong and was more easily impressed back when it was released. Rise really was an awful game.

I'm confused, the collectables were entirely optional and the story as throw away as most in gaming. The gameplay is up there with the best in the genre.

To be honest, the overly serious tone of the recent Tomb Raiders puts me off as well; I think it's the kind of series that works best with an Indiana Jonesy vibe, not afraid to go for high stakes while still having an appealing sense of fun and adventure to it.

Thimbleweed Park (Xbox One) [8]

Having been a point-and-click adventure fan since playing 'Zak McKracken' WAY BACK on a friend's Atari ST and then seeking-out and playing pretty much every LucasFilm/Arts adventure game around, I was really looking forward to this.

This plays as a spiritual sequel to 'Maniac Mansion' (as in the first one, not 'Day of the Tentacle') and there are many references to this earlier game, not least in the aesthetic and humour.

I'm reminded while playing it why it is I love Ron Gilbert's adventures so much. More than any other project lead from that era, he seemed to create games that (at least for the majority of the game) had several things that could be done at once. You weren't simply looking to solve one puzzle at a time; you often had multiple paths to explore and when one line of thought ended, subtle hints, clues and uncovered, new objects would reveal different paths or different things to try. This meant that things never really became stunted. Thimbleweed Park is also a great example of this; it's gently taxing with few 'monkey wrench / Le Chuck's Revenge' moments. The multi-character approach (each with their own agendas) adds to the 'open-ness' of the game.

I only have minor criticisms of the game... my personal favourite game from the era was / is 'The Secret of Monkey Island' and I guess - having waited decades for another pure 'point-and-click' from Gilbert - that I would have preferred a game closer in style to 'Monkey Island' (with Steve Purcell over-seeing the graphics and Michael Land creating another awesome musical score... I can only dream!).

It's was also clear - having seen the credits - the team making this game was really small. What they've managed to do on a shoe-string budget is really impressive. I only wonder what Gilbert and the team can do now. Hopefully this game will give them the financial clout to go on and make another point-and-click adventure.

A nostalgic love letter to both the late 80s and the early point-and-click adventure games. A treat for any veteran gamer and the best point-and-click adventure since 'Day of the Tentacle'.

Binary Doman - 8/10

+ Looks good.
+ Satisfying shooting.
+ Nice length.
+ Bosses were actually enjoyable for the most part.
+ I liked the upgrades and augmented abilities.
+ Story was vaguely intriguing.

- Idiotic team members who kept walking in front of my line of fire.
- Context issues with the A and B buttons meant Dan would often do what I didn't want him to do.
- Team mates wouldn't shut up.
- Lack of music. I can count about 3 occasions when music came on, and it actually sounded good. No idea why they didn't use it more.
- Voice command was gooseberry fool, so had to resort to buttons, which actually worked.

Crash Bandicoot 2 on PS1 via PS3. I'd played a bit of this years ago but I don't think I've ever finished it until now. It's an improvement over the original and it's mostly a pretty fun game but like it's predecessor it's frustratingly hard in places, collecting some of the gems in later stages was really a pain.

Since this improves over the original in some respects while still retaining some of it's flaws I'll give this a slightly higher 7.5/10
