Kirby Star Allies 7/10

Fun Kirby game but the AI allies makes an already easy game stupidly easy, plus the game is really short (took me 4 hours to complete with 60% completion rate). But even after all that a bad Kirby game is still a good Kirby game.

Bayonetta 2 9.5/10
Already played it and completed it on Wii U and whilst nothing has really changed since it's Wii U days, it's still a stunning action game that is the very best in it's genre and I can't wait for Bayonetta 3.

Hard not to let them be close to you when you got one that likes to go with you, haha.

Black Mesa - 9/10

Excellent way to replay Half Life 1, I want to go back and play through it again but for now I'll move onto other games. In meantime though have this lovely screenshot I've took:

I nearly bought black mesa yesterday. How much of the original halflife game is in it? Is it different or level for level remake?

Sorry it took me while to think of making post for this, haha.

Up until Xen chapters, everything is there, just lot fresher and nicer to look at. You have all the weapons from original (no HL2 weapons added in or any of new weapons from Oppressing Forces expac), all enemies are there, it's pretty much Half Life with better graphics and possibly new stuff like easter egg, but nothing that differs it from the original.

But as I said, there aren't Xen chapters yet, the development team is working on it (...for years) so if you would rather have whole complete pack, I'd hold off (or download free version if you own HL2/any of source games, not sure if you exactly need Half Life 2) but I thought it was worth every penny and I'm looking forward to what they can do to Xen.

Far Cry Primal on PS4. I really enjoyed this, yes the story was very basic and the selection of weapons was very limited but riding around on the back of a sabre tooth tiger firing arrows at people just never got old. I suppose the format is a little tired now but meh 8/10

GT Cube/GT Pro Series - Gamecube (Dolphin)

This is a racing oddity I was curious about - released only in Japan on the 'cube but in the west on Wii as GT Pro Series, this is actually a continuation of the GT Advance series from the GBA; a series of great but very niche Mode 7 racing games:

The jump to full 3d and pseudo cel-shading hasn't changed the core formula - race japanese cars around winding tracks, unlocking new cars and upgrades as you go. It is pretty janky in some regards - the game is hardly a graphical powerhouse but has a nice pseudo cel-shaded look:

Unfortunately it brings with it the same problems as its handheld forebears - you have to manually apply upgrades to each car, however there is no choice or decision making as each upgrade is a linear improvement, meaning any time you chose a different car you have to go through and reapply everything each time. I quite enjoyed it, but then I like janky b-tier niche racing games which many people don't, and may explain why this (and the Wii rerelease) were the last we saw of it, which is a shame as with some refinement this could have become a decent arcade series in the vein of Ridge Racer but with real world cars, including some that are rarely seen in games like the profoundly ugly Mitsuoka Orochi:

Image

GT Pro Series is bargain bin fodder at this point so can be found for very little, and might be up your street if you also appreciate slightly janky and niche racers.

Burnout - Gamecube (Dolphin)

I've wanted to start going back through classic racing series from their beginnings, seeing how they've changed over time, so started with this. It's very different to later games in terms of tone and setting, taking a much more reserved approach which, when considered on its own, doesn't really make it stand out - the cars are generic, the tracks in European and US environments are alright but nothing special and the soundtrack is a marked contrast from the mainstream hits and DJ Atomica seen later on (HEY HEY YOU YOU I DON'T LIKE YOUR GIRLFRIEND) The traffic-dodging gameplay makes it stand out from stuff like Ridge Racer etc., however if there hadn't been a Burnout 2 etc., this would probably have been remembered as a minor curio among the many racing games at the time, an interesting arcade racer that just didn't have enough of a distinctive personality to make a name for itself. However it clearly did do well enough to justify one then many sequels, so I'll be interested to see how things began to change going into 2 and then into 3, where the series really hit the big time. The singleplayer isn't particularly long, about 8 or so series of races and a couple of 1 on 1 face offs to unlock some extra vehicles including a bus and tow truck. Burnout is worth trying if you want to see where it all began, but I wouldn't rank it as a must-play/vital arcade racing game in its own right.

I've often wondered about picking up a copy of the original Burnout for my Xbox. I hugely enjoyed Burnout 2 but I played it exclusively in Crash Mode rather than the main racing mode. I have the sequels, Takedown and Revenge, but, for my tastes, the second version remains my preference.

Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition (HD collection version)

Been playing through the DMC games recently. The first game is good and the sequel really is as bad as people say it is, but the third game blows both of them out of the water.

Everything about this game is so cool. The deep and stylish combat, the characters, the story, the cutscenes, the music and the aesthetic in general. And it's damn hard even on Normal, which apparently is as difficult as the hard mode on Japanese. The difficulty was also apparently 'recalibrated' for this special edition release, so I don't even know how punishing the original was.

I will say that at times it felt a bit unfair or obnoxious but that's inevitable and it was less frustrating than Bayonetta, in part because I felt like the controls were better.

At the moment this is my favourite game in this genre but I have yet to play the later DMCs and Bayo 2, something which I'll be rectifying soonish.

Just Cause 3 (PS4)

Just Cause 3 reminds me of games like Mad Max and Infamous: Second Son where the majority of progress is made by capturing certain areas. The game does have a number of main missions (about 24) but at certain points of the game it is going to make you liberate a number of areas to continue which is good to extend the game play time, but bad if you want to just concentrate on the main story. Outside of the main missions and liberating various areas (normally a town or military base) there are a number of "mini missions" (typically kill someone or get someone to safety) and challenges that once completed, count towards various upgrades. There is a great deal to do in this game so for anyone on a budget and wants a game with a lot of value, this is definitely worth looking at. That is, if you have a PC.

Whilst the game looks quite nice on the PS4 and it is fun to play, it has one massive torturous addition that no one wants, slow and frequent loading times. Each time you die, look forward to loading rather than jumping straight back into the game. Want to do a challenge? Enjoy long loading, doing the challenge and then more long loading to get back to the game. If you come across a difficult area to liberate you will really fill the loading pain, particularly if you don't restart in the area where you died and have to travel back to it.

The loading really spoils this game, so much so that I didn't bother with the challenges and therefore with limited upgrades, the game was more difficult.

If you got this free on PSN+, definitely worth having a look at it to see if you can put up with the loading. If you don't have PSN+ and have the choice of the PS4 or PC version, do yourself a favour and get it on the PC (assuming you have a good enough spec PC to run it on :D )

Devil May Cry - 7/10

+ HD version looks good
+ Combat's enjoyable
+ Nice length (kennethwilliams.jpg)

- Minor issues with the camera/controls
- Plot's naff
- Terrible writing
- Muffled voices. And then when you turn subtitles on they appear for everyone except Dante. :fp:

Uncharted 2 - PS4

As with the first game, I enjoyed this up to a point fairly near to the end, after which it became not fun in the slightest. For all the spectacle (and it does look spectacular on even the base ps4) towards the end it still goes too far for me into fast annoying enemies and massive damage sponges who seem to ignore all gunfire until they suddenly drop dead.

Still a lot of fun though even if I did end up scrubbing it down to easy just to get it done. UC4 got rave reviews for winding up Nathan's story while reflecting on the past games, so i'm curious to go through 3 on the way to see what all the fuss is about.

I felt exactly the same way about UC2, I haven't played it since release as I remember hating the end so much. The final boss is one of the worst I can think of.

I loved UC 4.

I first played UC2 on PS3 years ago and stopped playing once the blue guardian bastards come into play. However my PS4 came with UC4 and the collection was on sale at the time so I thought i'd persevere this time around. I'll get round to UC3 in a while, and even though it's not great, it'll be nice to play an Uncharted where i'm not subconsciously going "oh yeah, I remember this bit."

Uncharted: Lost Legacy - 9/10

Finished this tonight and wow, absolutely loved every minute of it. Some of the best set pieces in the series, glorious graphics and a really healthy balance between story, gunplay and puzzle solving. Loved Chloe and Nadine as the lead characters, really well written characters and a pleasure to play as.

Minor criticisms would only be that it's a little on the short side and as with any Uncharted game it has the occasional frustrating moments with enemies and their 'homing' grenades. Still, absolutely loved it.

Titanfall 2 campaign - 8.5/10

Not really a proper review as stopped playing halfway through a long time ago and finished off the 2nd half over the last few days. Great gameplay and loved the constant changing of items you collect. Nice connection with your titan.

Borderlands: The Pre-sequel - 7/10

Very similar to the other games but a fun romp. You can't beat a shotgun calling you a c**t.

Wolfenstein TNC

The plot and characterization was a big disappointment coming from TNO. I felt like it was thematically all over the place, and the pacing was much the same. It was very very silly, and throws what could have been an interesting topic out the window halfway through the game, in the most ludicrous way possible. Gameplay was fine enough, although I miss the different uses of the laser rifle. Suitably challenging game, much like the first one.

Interesting. My opinion of the game ran almost exactly the opposite of yours: the narrative and characterisations were a step up from the last game but the combat was way worse.

The plot was indeed ridiculous, it's a Wolfenstein game, but the themes it chose to explore were fascinating and went even further in highlighting the consequences of the Nazi regime on minorities and the greater populace. The characters too were great; Sigrun and Grace immediately became as iconic as any of the TNO crowd and Frau Engle was far more present in the story than Deathshead, if not quite as intimidating.

I enjoyed the plot because of its audacity. What other game would have had the protagonist confront and kill his abusive father, then take the same protagonist and cut his head off, give him a new body and have him audition for a TV serial about himself under the watchful eyes of Adolf Hitler (who then pisses on the carpet and falls asleep) on Venus . And it works. It really, really shouldn't, but it works.

My disappointment came with the combat and the often confusing level design. More than once I found myself completely unsure of how to proceed due to the more open-ended design and lack of waypointing, and they somehow managed to completely ruin stealth runs with oddly placed commanders and a far more sensitive alert system. It was often not that fun to actually play.

Still, I forgave it those flaws as I thought the plot and characters made up for it in spades.
