PostRecommendations of 2D shooters with destructible terrain

I'm looking for some game references.

I need 2D shooters with destructible terrain (i.e. you can deform the terrain with weapon fire) or destructible enemies (i.e. enemies that you can shoot bits off before completely destroying them). Anyone know of any?

Bonus points if shooters are set in space and/or use gravity as a gimmick.

You mean of the Scorched Tanks/Gravity Force 2 (Gravity Power) type?

Because those two are the first that pop into my mind.

Also Minecraft to a lesser degree.

Deformable terrain kind of fell out of fashion when games moved to 3D, though we're reaching a point where hardware is fast enough that you can kind of get a reasonable approximation of 3D pixels with them.

Yeah but not necessarily with you controlling a vehicle. Could be Turrican/Contra-esque too.

Any 2D game that does interesting stuff with destructible terrain would also be helpful.

Hmm, I really can't think of much with deformable terrain at all.

In terms of 2D you've got games like Worms. Dig Dug. Boulder Dash. Diggers on the CD32.

in 3D, you've kind of got the Red Faction games.

There's probably some offbeat indie stuff that messes around with the concept, though I don't really recall seeing much.

less of the terrain modification, but of the physics genus, there's Intrusion, where large chunks of the world are physics objects, which is essentially what terrain modification boils down to: treating large chunks of the world as seperate and modifiable objects.

Oh, and back to terrain modification: Tiny and Big.

Thanks. That's helplful. Intrusion looks interesting in particular. Yeah, I think the indie scene is where I'm likely to find the most references.

Hmm. Cybernator had a decent bash at cosmetic damage to it's levels.

And I suppose it's worth mentioning R-Type. Mostly.for the battleship stage, but stage 4(?) also has enemies who drop scenery you can destroy.
