It was similar with GTAV, I believe - you couldn't see where you hadn't been yet.

Apart from that GTAV came with a fold out map in the box (as does RDR2 I believe)

Aye it does, but no leaked pics of that map yet!

It's impressive Rockstar always manages to get so close to release with barely any gameplay footage or details to show.

Full map from the official guide leaked!

Thoughts:

Notably no Mexico on that map. Wouldn't put it part Rockstar to not have Mexico on the paper maps and for it to be a surprise towards the end of the game, but I'm not too disappointed either way!

Gave in and pre-ordered it. Mostly as I had a £40 Amazon voucher.

Why fund one company abusing its staff when I could fund two eh?

Now to await the reviews (which will no doubt be glowing and give very few if any negatives, but oh well), excitement building!

I didn’t play the first game. Is this essentially GTA but in the Wild West?

Yes.

However, if you’re into the Wild West films then you should like it.

Thanks I may consider this. Haven’t played a GTA game for a few years now, didn’t bother with the last one but the western themeing gives this an interesting twist. I comtemplated the original but didn’t go for it.

Pretty much aye!

That said I much prefer RDR to GTA. I think the reduction of "gubbins" (e.g. phone calls every 7 seconds, a plethora of sub par activities (tennis, yoga, triathlons etc), taxi/police/firetruck/ambulance missions, strangers needing help every 60 seconds as you drive down the road) really help you get lost in the gorgeous world Rockstar created.

There's definitely gubbins in RDR too, but it feels much more pared down and integral to the world. Hunting to create bigger satchels from the pelts, solving treasure maps or stopping by a saloon to play poker were some of my fave moments in the first game, and it never felt like these things were being shoved down my throat, unlike GTA 5 where the legend for the map is higger than the screen.

It's all horses (with balls) for courses, of course, but RDR really appeals to my personal taste as a garner.

Disclaimer: RDR2 might be rubbish and full of said gubbins.

Picture of the paper map from the gamebox!

Don't know why they couldn't have flattened it before taking the pic though, haha.

Map Talk:

Looks like no Mexico, aye. However, if you zoom in and up the contrast a bit you can see there is actually topography for Mexico (as opposed to white space around the rest of the map), leading some people to speculate it might be a post-story area, or later DLC.

That said, I'm not super bummed if there's no Mexico - it's a cool looking area but I'm sure the game will be full of those!

Perhaps unsurprising at this point, but looks like there will be a companion app launching on Friday, that will connect to your PS4/Xbox as you play. Probably to give you a dynamic map but hopefully will take a cue from FO4 and give you access to the pause menu, too

Timely!

https://kotaku.com/inside-rockstar-game ... ku_Twitter

Dan and Sam Houser, the co-founders of Rockstar and creative leads on Red Dead Redemption 2, are renowned for rebooting, overhauling, and discarding large chunks of their games. Through eight years of development on Red Dead Redemption 2, the Housers and other directors have made a number of major changes to the story, the core gameplay mechanics, and the game’s overall presentation. It’s a process that some see as essential for making a game of this nature, but it’s also one that leads to a great deal of overtime, and has contributed to a culture of crunch at Rockstar Games that is impossible to deny, according to interviews with dozens of current and former employees. This isn’t crunch that came in a burst of a few weeks—it’s crunch that, those employees say, has lasted for months or even years.
