I don't think it's strawmanning if Mafro's just laughing at your post, Photek.

Anyway I'm baffled a bit by the hype for this. I played RDR, and really enjoyed it. It was a good open world game that had a great setting. However I can't help but think some people are a bit blinded by the Western theme. It didn't really do much different from other open world games. The missions were very similar to what was asked of is in GTA, the gunplay and character movement was very similar to GTA and the side quests and world events and whatnot were all quite similar to other open world games.

It was very good, but it wasn't a masterpiece in my eyes. So I find a lot of the unequivocal hype and fawning to be a bit much. Seems to happen every time we get a Rockstar game. It's probably not helped by the fact that, although I liked RDR, the past two GTAs have left me a little.cold. V was better, but we had this sort of hype for IV too, and how it would change open world games, and it just didn't.

I would actually argue that since the PlayStation 2 era ended, Rockstar's open world games havent been at the forefront of the genre.

Well I presume he was making the argument he posted after quoting me that gamers dont care about devs, so to that point it is strawmannirg.

I’m not hyped at all but care to mention what games are at the forefront of the genre that aren’t made by Rockstar?

I’d cavat that quest/story wise The Witcher 3 is king, I found GTA V’s 3 stories quite convoluted and muddled. GTA IV’s DLC was pretty good though.

Was the person by any chance American?

Asking any staff to do 100 hour weeks is bloody stupid as so many studies have shown that productivity falls off a cliff and would it really stop people buying the game if it was out a few months late so that the developers aren't worked into a state of deep depression?

Wifes nephew was doing 100hr weeks playtesting COD BLOPS 4 for a couple of weeks before launch, when I was last in the states he was mentioning how broken the online is on CoD’s a month out and that they’re working on freshly patched versions almost daily in the run up to launch and even past it to provide patches.

The only way I'd agree to do such hours is if they said I could have the overtime off as extra holiday in return at double time rate otherwise I'd say no thanks. Then again the situation for workers in the US is bloody brutal and seemingly many Americans have a feeling that having decent working protections against horrible and abusive employers is socialism and thus bad.

Womp womp. The devs should finish it in their spare time for free. Yikes. 4 hours of game can be finished in a few evenings whats the problem y'all. Stay safe.

It's a tough one without knowing the situation. During some major storms I've worked over 100 hour weeks. The thing is that it is technically optional but you have the thing of working in a team that you can't just get in other people, if you don't work you know that your team mates are going to struggle.

However, getting your pay packet is very nice.

What open world games of the last generation would you say were better than GTA Vice or RDR?

For me the attention to detail of the world's, the varying missions, actual dialogue that sounds like it's been voiced by a human and many other little touches just make them a cut above for me.

Witcher 3. Arguments could be made for the 2 most recent AssCreed games too.

They weren't last gen.

I enjoyed Origins but no way is it in a level with a Rockstar game, arguably it's not even as good as the Ezio games. The NPC dialogue in Ass Creed had barely progressed since 1 and the game is still the same missions in repeat. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy the Unisoft open world games but they're essentially about making numbers go up and map clearing.

Reviews out 25/10/2018, I expect it to be the highest scoring game of the generation.

I totally agree with you on the hype. Rockstar are masters at generating it and getting people all giddy on the Kool Aid with minimal effort. They always seem really controlling over the press with their previews and reviews as well so I don't even bother reading any of them. It's pretty obvious from the reactions when it was revealed that it's going to get 10s across the board.

GTA IV was decent. The open world was fun but the story was pretty crap and it was still filled with a bunch of problems form the previous gen's games (no mid-mission checkpoints, sluggish controls, crap shooting, annoying weapon selection, same boring tailing mission templates with invincible enemies until you reach a certain point etc.) The two single player DLCs (remember those?) were better than the main game.

RDR was all the worst parts of GTA IV in a more boring setting. Got bored after Mexico and didn't finish.

GTA V loved it for the most part. Story and characters were a lot more interesting than the previous game and some of the set pieces were great. Didn't put much time into the online stuff because it was a mess so I didn't get to try most of the heists.

RDR2 - not arsed and even more so now after that interview, Dan Houser always comes off as a dickhead with no sense of self-awareness in every interview I've read with him.

Personally I think Assassins Creed 2, Brotherhood and Revelations were better than any of Rockstar's stuff last gen and Witcher 3 is currently the best open world game out there, can't see that changing for a long time. I'd probably rate Watch Dogs 2 better than GTA V too.

That thread is full of idiots like that and people defending Rockstar, unsurprisingly.

Well surely that depends on whether or not you prefer an urban setting over a rural one? RDR was a fantastic representation of the frontiers. Fair enough if that's not your cup of tea, but I really enjoyed the vast expanses and open spaces. I can't wait to explore the new wilderness when I eventually get RDR2 :msgreen:

While I won't be buying RDR 2, I also thoroughly enjoyed RDR, far more than the GTA titles. Growing up watching westerns no doubt played its part in that.

The correct opinion is Breath of the Wild. Only MGSV comes close mechanically, but the actual open world aspect is poorly done. Breath of the Wild is the full package and a genuine step change in open world design (although Grow Home did come before its time, in a post-BOTW world I think Grow Up could have been very different).

Fallout New Vegas
MGSV: Ground Zeroes
Mount and Blade: Warband

I might argue for Minecraft, Just Cause 2 and Assassin's Creed 2 as well. Vice City is damn good though.

The Rockstar fanboy stuff is a real thing. I've one mate who's hyped beyond hype for RDR2. While playing PUBG 3 of us were just trying to temper his expectation a little bit by not buying into every single nugget of information released so far, citing other games that talk about features when in reality they never quite reach that the blurb said. He got angry and was all "but why would Rockstar lie"? and we kinda laughed, he was deadly serious though so the exchange got all rather awkward.

I mentioned that it'd be some game to beat The Witcher 3, and another mate agreed and he said that it'll be "easily be better than that" despite never ever playing The Witcher. :fp:

I advised him to buy it on his PS4 Pro over his X1S cos it'll look and play better and I don't expect to see him on Xbox from Oct 26th onwards tbh.

The R* fanboy stuff is a very real thing, you're quite right.

There's a young lad who works behind the bar at my local. Nice guy but scarily hyped for RDR 2, so much so he was aghast that I wasn't buying it myself. "But you're a gamer!" etc. He really couldn't grasp why I had no plans to pick it up.

Maybe this shows a difference in taste, I love BOTW but I don't think it does much, if anything for the open world template. Mechanically I'm with you in that MGSV and BOTW are the best out there.

Those a pretty niche selection of games. F:NV is good but the fanboys have gone way overboard.
