If you have some first-hand insight and are able to share it then do so. If not...

I'm glad you asked!

Stop Preordering Video Games

Want to know why there aren't any demos anymore? This is why. Want to know why content is withheld from everyone's game and is instead sprinkled across various competing retailers? This is why. Want to know why there's now an accepted norm where those paying more for a game can sometimes gain competitive advantages? This is why. Publishers don't need to sell you on their games, because by slavishly throwing money down before they're even out, you've signalled your intent to take whatever it is they give you.

'Far Cry 5' Is A Good Example Of Why Pre-Ordering A Game Is A Bad Idea

The point of preordering a game used to be to guarantee yourself a copy on day one. But today? For a massive tentpole release? It's highly unlikely anyone will run out of physical discs, and certainly nobody's going to run out of downloads. Today, preordering benefits the game's publisher, or GameStop, but not the consumer. And those who benefit know that—hence the increasingly elaborate bonus gewgaws they offer you in return for your money.

Why preordering games is never a good idea

The industry relies heavily on publicity to influence sales. I’d like to believe that gamers know not to jump to conclusions about any particular title, no matter how much hype it gets. Why else would so many publishers include such an abundance of preorder bonuses if not to coax us out of our disbelief? In any case, saving money by purchasing wisely is a much easier task to accomplish. Most gamers would not even begin to think about putting their money down toward a game that they know they will not enjoy. So is it really worth paying to reserve a copy of a new release when we don’t even know how good the game will be?

https://venturebeat.com/community/2013/ ... good-idea/

You should never, ever, preorder a video game

Game distributors and retailers also use preorder data to gauge interest in a title. They're basically using your donation to measure how successful a marketing campaign is even before anyone has played the game. And once you've pledged those few dollars, odds are you'll be back come release day. If not, the money stays with the retailer, where you'll most likely use it on another title -- or even worse, forget about it.

:slol: You asked! I highlighted the titles incase you weren't feeling up to reading the whole thing.

It's not worse than piracy no, but that's pure whataboutism and has nothing to do with the subject at hand. It's bad. You're free to do it, but it's bad

EDIT: That subject change!

But what if they run out of digital copies on release day?

Any digital extras only available when preordering? I bought Astro Bot on release day when if I'd bought it the night before I would have gotten the soundtrack (which is unavailable on Spotify :x ) and a nice theme, so was gutted I missed out on those.

No worries!

Like I've said before, when posting about specific subjects (as we are now) it's very easy to infer that the subject is of a higher import than it actually is. Pre-ordering is obvs completely normal, it's just a bit silly in this day and age.

Came into the thread to look at an unexpected Star Wars tie-in. Was disappointed. :(

70 main quest missions isn't that the same roughly as GTA'5?

Can't remember the last time I pre-ordered a game and mostly because, well, unless you're after a limited edition set of one type or another pre-ordering is a bit pointless this day and age.

I preorder games so I can preload them and get it at a lower price if digital, or get them 1-3 days early if physical.

But mostly because I strawberry floating want to.

Nice feature on this in the latest EDGE. They had six hours with it from the start. Sounds very promising.

Sure, if you have a bricks and mortar store near you. How do supermarket/specialist store game prices compare to online?

Is anyone picking up anything other than the standard edition? £25 extra seems like a lot for a map and extra missions that should already be in the game or an extra £40 for a few more extra “story” missions
