They were taking saliva swabs at work today and I kind of got peer pressured into joining. Without reading into what it entails. I kind of wish I never joined now...might email the company to see if Is possible to opt out even though it maybe selfish. As I dunno what I would do if they ended u calling me saying I'm a match...
Anyone else here joined such a register and what do you think?

Bone marrow donation is only slightly more effort than giving blood and will save a person's life.

However, if you really don't want to do it you can just say "no" when they phone you. They aren't going to hold you down and take it by force.

Yeah that's true I could just say no if I get asked but at he pony I think I would feel so guilty for saying no after knowing someone needed it. I'd rather opt out asap and never know...if you know what I mean. Or do you reckon that there is no shame is saying no if it ever came up

There are two methods which I only found out after signing up
Few days of injections to boost stem cell production
Then
1) extraction from your blood over 4-5hours
Or
2) you go under for surgery to extract it from your hip bones

All this plus a lot of travelling...I guess to a location where the patient is located anywhere around the world

SoK: You have to visit a hospital a few days in a row to get a series of shots which make your body produce excess bone marrow stem cells. Then you visit the hospital again to have the stem cells filtered out of your blood.

It's a bit of a ballache but it isn't particularly high-effort, dangerous or painful.

In most cases you won't have to have any bone marrow 'extracted'. That can be a little riskier, though it's still low-risk in the grand scheme of things.

[Edited out some abuse]

If you've registered, a process that costs the charity approximately £40, and committed to saving the life of someone else in exchange for minimal relative discomfort and inconvenience to yourself and then say no if you come up as a match then yes, that's shameful. If you don't want to donate, get yourself taken off the register ASAP. If you stay on with no intention on donating then you waste the precious time they'll spend getting in contact with you. Please.

There's a registration rally at work on Monday for stem cells, a guy from head office at Canary Wharf needs one. He's South East Asian so it's unlikely I'll match but I'm popping into work a little early so they can swab my cheek.

Just strawberry floating do it if needed.

Can't do it myself - or give blood - as my body is generally falling apart at the seams.

It is completely your choice. If you've been pressured by people at work or shamed by people calling you a pussy on here then your consent for being on the register isn't valid in my opinion.

Having said that I would echo Igor in saying that you need to get removed from the list ASAP if you're not going to do it as it's quite literally life and death.

I haven't given blood in years but I do want to again. They keep on sending me letters for sessions in Berkshire as that's where I last donated :fp:

You're highly unlikely to be asked, and if you are you might well change your mind when the reality of saving someone's life kicks in.

I'm not allowed to give blood and apparently you have to be under 30 to join the bone marrow register so I get away with that as well.

Thanks yes I'll contact them on Monday to get myself removed. I'll even donate the £40 that it costs them to register someone...so I haven't wasted their money.

I don't understand your objection if you have already donated blood. The procedure of donation is usually done through filtering blood so why would you refuse to do what you have already done? Oh, well, it's your body.

I haven't donated blood before. This procedure is very different. Its not a case of extracting blood in a couple of minutes.
Its a 2 day hospital stay and a couple of days of injections prior. Or if the patient's doctor decides that directly extracting the marrow is a better open you will be asked to undergo surgery to your hip instead. Although it is entirely up to the donor how he/she donates.

I remember my dad donating bone marrow about 18 years ago, back then it was a surgical procedure though and he was sore for a while afterwards.

Unfortunately the child it went to still died but got to live for an extra 18 months so it wasn't entirely in vain.

I get harangued by the blood service on account of my O Neg blood type.

Donate when I can, but I currently can't because of the Dom Rep holiday. But still, they keep proactively making appointments that I have to cancel.
