Seems like a yoga class is probably a good idea then. Not a fan of gyms but I have been looking to get into yoga for a while

I've found it really good for mental and physical health.

Plus I shagged a couple of instructors before meeting my current partner

Me trying this would be the cringiest thing you've ever seen  I'm not very conventional, attractive or Charasmatic.

My friend did marry our old dance instructor though so it does seem to work!

Good to have you back mate. Sorry you've not had a great time by the sounds of it.

Great to see you're still here as well Lewis. :datass:  Don't be sorry. It gave my life the quintessential kick-up-the-arse I absolutely needed to begin living my best life yet and it taught me soooooooo much in the process (about loads of things). I'm grateful it happened and I'd go through it again to have the same two kids and same royal kick in the balls. 8-)

Lack of convention is fine, I remember seeing your pic with the ice pick and you look absolutely grand, and charisma is something you can work on.

Tbf at worst you'll improve your flexibility so it can be a win win anyway

That's a pretty old pic, (like at least 10 years, if you're talking about me holding an icicle and not mistaking me for someone else) but thanks! I guess I don't look much different now, just less hair and more piercings.

My Fiance's visa just came through today so she's clear to come over for us to get married in April :toot:

The one bugger is that a Fiance visa doesn't allow NHS access, so we'll have to get a Private GP appointment and some private prescriptions for her existing Asthma/Diabetes prescriptions until we can switch over to a full Spouse visa which does allow NHS access.

At a cost of £1,700.

Then in April next year will be another £3,000 or so for 2.5 years, then another £3,000 for 2.5 years, then £2,400 for Indefinite Leave to Remain (Well, the cost will probably go up in 5 and a half years)

So....yeah, at a minimum it's going to fully cost at least a good £10,000 just for her to get the right to live here. That's before any actual relocation costs :dread:

I'm late to this, congrats first of all man. WTF is going on with the expense? For comparison, my wife moved here from the US and had to pay €200 every 2 years to have a valid visa before we got married.

That's wildly cheap. My ex paid something like £3,000 for an ancestry visa when she first came over, then around £5,000 for permanent residency after five years. Would've been another couple of grand on top of that for citizenship if she'd wanted it, too.

Yeah the UK immigration costs have gone insane. You also used to be able to get permanent residency after just the first spouse visa, then they added the requirement to need a second one as well.
The only real benefit to it is that on the spouse visa you have access to the NHS like anyone else.

I don't understand the NHS thing, do some people not have access to it?

Just checked it costs €175 for her to become an Irish citizen.

Unless you have a visa and pay a surcharge to cover a certain amount of tax cost, then no you don’t.

Well of course if you don’t have a visa… but laga was distinguishing between visas?! Maybe not, it’s a confusing sentence tbh.

It even depends on the visa. Only visas with a validity of more than 6 months allow access to the NHS, and only if you pay an upfront surcharge.
My fiance is coming over on a Fiance visa (which cost about £1,500) but it's only valid for 6 months so doesn't allow her to use the NHS, so we also had to buy 6 months of insurance until we can get the spouse visa after we marry.

It's worth pointing out though that seeing a GP and A&E treatment are free even without a visa. But if you have to be admitted to hospital or undergo further procedures then those are all chargeable. Also, if you don't have a visa type where you've paid the surcharge then you don't pay the NHS prescription costs, you pay the full cost of the medication, provided you have insurance. If you don't have insurance then you're charged 150% the cost of the medication.

I will be eligible to be a US citizen in 2.5 years, which feels very quick to me.

Gonna do it ASAP, feel like I'd rather have the yanks negotiating me out of a hostage situation these days.
