My uncle has lived in the states for 15+ years but will not become a citizen because he values his British passport more than a US one. Not sure what arrangement he is living under - he's married an American and works, pays taxes but cannot vote etc

They allow dual citizenship, but they unusually for most countries require you to pay income tax even if you're working in another country.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

They do, Boris Johnson was a dual citizen until the US came after him for tax.

I think the only other country that taxes on citizenship rather than residency is Eritrea.

Taxation without representation? I thought the Americans were against that?

Oh yeah you can get dual citizenship, wouldn't give up UK citizenship for US.

Edit: dunno what your Uncle believes, dual, but he's wrong.

I'm pretty sure Australia does allow dual citizenship. It's just their senators that aren't allowed to be dual citizens, there was a story a few years ago about some Aussie senators who had to resign after it was discovered they were dual citizens.

That's why I'm going to take advantage of the Belfast Treaty and get myself a Republic of Ireland passport (while keeping my UK one for being born in Northern Ireland). Gives me full access to Europe (work, etc.) and I can even get my kids the passport as well. No reason not to from what I can tell (unless anyone knows anything different).

It's probably a long way into the future, but if/when your kids have kids, make sure they are added to the Irish foreign births register. They can then pass it down to their own kids.

My grandad was Irish and so I was entitled to Irish citizenship, but I didn't take it up until after my son was born, which makes him ineligible. If I had done it before he was born, then he'd be able to get it as well.
