im not sure if it was a full on renouncement but i //recall// her getting really annoyed by a lot of aspects of the people who were part of her community at her church. but one day she poofed so.

Creation myths are actually really interesting, especially when you see certain, sometimes really specific things that unite cultures that never encountered each other. I mean, the reasons why are sometimes quite obvious (obsession with creation being borne from the sun or the sea or something), but then a lot have really oddly specific things (creation from specific body parts, creation being a painful version of birth but from a male, particular focus on the idea of the world being 'vomited' up by a male deity) that don't have easy explanations.

And then there's dragons and gooseberry fool but then we know that they're real coz I saw one on the telly.

I was very loosely raised CofE but my parents didn't ever really talk about it. I was always a bit confused by religion and it never seemed like the right answer to me even in tough times. I eventually figured out that I'm an atheist.

It's never been a problem for me if people believe, I don't really think it's my place to argue (unless I'm being evangelised to, but then they started it

). I was a bit more argumentative when I was younger and edgier but I learned you'll never change their minds and most of them are harmless anyway.

I don't think religion is inherently bad, it's what that individual makes of it, but I do think it's broadly a good thing that the developed world is slowly but steadily leaving it behind. Means people have one less reason to get angry at each other. I do think literal interpretation is an inherently bad thing as it prevents people from accepting science, but luckily that's pretty rare in the UK, at least as far as I know.

Interested to see if we have any practicing religious people on GRcade at all. I think I can maybe recall one or two members being religious.

A former colleague of mine is/was a Christian lesbian. I always found that a little odd with the whole Adam and Eve not Madam and Eve schtick most Christians seem to spout.

I grew up Catholic, and I still eat fish on Friday, mostly out of habit. I don't think of Jesus while I do it, though.

I'm an atheist. Mainly because the idea of God just doesn't make any sense to me.
I also went to a CoE school which seems to be a bit of a trend for atheists on here.

I don't remember her renouncing Christianity as I remember her talking about Christianity a fair bit, but obviously a while ago. Pretty sure she left SONM after everyone was banging on about Bernie Sanders or something if I recall.

I don’t believe in and religions or spirits or gods or anything like that.

If people want to believe in something then that’s up to them. I only care if it’s being forced onto somebody else or if it affects me.

Anyhow, raised Catholic, in a city where people get religion and football confused. Wouldn’t say I’m religious at all, and if anything my experience of coming through the Catholic school system has only made me believe less.

Nice, balanced, reasoned.

I grew up having to go to church. By about 14 I said no. The desperation and despair of nihilism didn't hit me full on until I was at university.... That point when you realise, deep, deep inside you, that life is pointless...... My parents are still active members of their church, my dad is a church warden. I could never get my head around my dad believing in all that crap as he was one of the most intelligent men I'd ever known otherwise. (Note, I no longer see my blood family.)

I don't think religion will ever go away I'm afraid. I think the need for belief in something other than ourselves is wired deep inside us.

The only 'religion' I have any respect for now is Buddhism - but only really the 'non-belief' kinds. I've got several hundred books on it, particularly Zen. (But also many books on Japan generally, gardens, architecture, haiku and other poetry etc. etc. etc.)

Oh and a few years ago I attended Quakers for three and a half years as I'd read all about atheist Quakers. Unfortunately I don't think my local branch was ready for such thinking so, despite the fact that I enjoyed it and it gave me a lot, I packed in in respect to more traditional types. I've still got a lot of time for Quakers though.

Its all a load of bollocks, every single bit of it. But if believing in magic helps you sleep at night then go for it, just dont expect me to care or respect it just cos you say so.

Also I cant wait to see $ilvas reaction to this thread, is he still active or did he get banned again?

He came back for a bit a few months ago and then vanished again when his anti-religion views clashed with Our Lord and Saviour (Karl). I am not saying that Karl banned him for his dissent, but nobody has seen him since and there is a suspicious pile of ashes in the US Politics thread. Was he burnt as an offering to Lord Karl the Saviour? I couldn’t say, but….

When it comes to my own beliefs, i prefer to keep an open mind. If you asked me a decade ago if in the future i would go into a church, light a candle, and say a prayer, i would have likely said no, yet that is now something i do quite often.

I have no problem with religion when it doesn’t affect anyone else or is used for good, I can’t stand how religion is used as a excuse for someone to be hateful towards groups of other people or extremely sexist.

Im not religious. Im christened CofE but I think thats basically because it was the done thing. My mother has said one of her regrets is christening me before I could make a decision myself, but I dont really care.

My girlfriend is Catholic and so is her daughter who also goes to a Catholic school, but it doesnt interfere with my life. They both know Im a godless heathen but I do go to the church to support them at christmas or whatever. I hate it there because the seats are uncomfortable and the services go on too long, but its rare I have to attend so I just get on with it.

My main problem with Catholicism (apart from the child molestation and money laundering) is its constant focus on sin and suffering. Its a religion of guilt and shame rather than one of freedom and care. The damn Jesus statue is all covered in gore, every sermon is about failings and pain. I also hate how behind the altar there is a special place only the priest is allowed into, its all covered in gold and gooseberry fool, but the worshippers are sat on cold hard wood.

The thing i've noticed about Catholicism is just how beautifully decorated some of their churches are.

I found this tiny one last year in Italy, it was gorgeous...
