There’s a line in the movie Dogma that goes something like “You Catholics don’t celebrate your faith, you mourn it” which I have always thought summed it up well.

I had to go to the Presbyterian church until I was about 16. I didn't really enjoy it too much. I can count the amount of times I have been there on my right hand since that age.

Well, it has affected my moral compass, I feel like I'm reasonably well rounded, and it probably is because I listened to Jesus stories for so long, some of it has sunk in. I overthrow tables now at sales and I try to resurrect the dead wherever possible.

Nay, it was in the middle of nowhere. Yet strangely the graveyard was always filled with beer tins and condoms.

Fire and wind struck down these giants, and they threw their bodies into the waters, but in their rage, the gods forgot the secret of steel and left it on the battlefield. We who found it are just men. Not gods. Not giants. Just men.

This is basically what I believe.

I have the collectors edited of Life of Brian. Jesus is in that briefly. "Blessed are the cheese makers". That's about as close as I like to get to religion.

How disappointing, I once knew a girl who lived on Gordon Street. But that was a long time ago, when I was a young man. Not a day passes I don't think her, and the promise that I made which I will always keep. That one perfect day on Gordon Street.

You've got it backwards, not only are they God-fearing, but Atheist-fearing too. You're not trapped there with them, they're trapped with you.

My girlfriend is Catholic and so is her daughter who also goes to a Catholic school, but it doesnt interfere with my life. They both know Im a godless heathen but I do go to the church to support them at christmas or whatever. I hate it there because the seats are uncomfortable and the services go on too long, but its rare I have to attend so I just get on with it.

My main problem with Catholicism (apart from the child molestation and money laundering) is its constant focus on sin and suffering. Its a religion of guilt and shame rather than one of freedom and care. The damn Jesus statue is all covered in gore, every sermon is about failings and pain. I also hate how behind the altar there is a special place only the priest is allowed into, its all covered in gold and gooseberry fool, but the worshippers are sat on cold hard wood.

Congratulations, you’re Martin Luther.

I still get a bit lairy when people talk smack about Catholicism, even though there is literally no counter-argument to any of the things you’ve said there, and a literal breakaway religion was founded off the back of the massive wealth disparity between church and laymen.

But all those guys support Rangers. :dread:

In two of his later works, Luther expressed antagonistic views towards Jews, writing that Jewish homes and synagogues should be destroyed, their money confiscated, and liberty curtailed.

Atheist. I don't care about religion, it does not interest me, I am not bothered if someone wants to believe in something, I will respect their views. However, if someone tries to impress or force their views onto me or someone else I have no problem interjecting to gently remind them that respect of one's beliefs is a two-way street.

I'll respect their right to have their views, but actually respecting their views is not something I can usually manage.

That is what I am saying. I am obviously not going to undertake the same rituals (i.e. prayer) that they do.

I actually find it interesting, but more in a historical way. It’s fascinating to read about beliefs that people have held or still hold and to look at how they came about.

To actually believe in any of it is very strange to me, there have been thousands of gods and goddesses across all of the worlds cultures, why would your belief be the correct one? Even if you pick the “right” religion, have you chosen the correct flavour of it? Imagine arriving at the gates of heaven and being told that sure you picked out Christianity and got it right, but unfortunately you are Catholic and it was actually the Methodists that got it right. Unlucky pal, you are going to hell for your papist ways.

Christian here. I was brought up in an atheist household so had little or no exposure to religion beyond RE lessons at school and whatever I picked up on TV.

Came to Christianity in my 20's and have attended both Baptist and Church of England churches since then with varying levels of involvement - I was on the PCC and for a period served as church warden at a previous CofE church, but generally I would say I have more of a passive involvement.

I don't see it as my role to go around badgering people about their beliefs or aggressively trying to convert them to Christianity - some might argue this means I'm doing it wrong, but there you go!

Couldn’t agree more. The whole thing is masochistic.
