I have a confession to make;

I am one of those people who actually likes Shiny Happy People.

You have no idea how much I hate U2. Yes even the Joshua Tree was gooseberry fool! It doesn't help that Bono is a Grade A banana split

At the time when I was an edgy young man into drugs and esoteric 60s psychedelia I thought it was strawberry floating gooseberry fool and I thought that people who danced to it were strawberry floating gooseberry fool too (see also: people who sat down to Sit Down by James).

Nowadays I'm not so sure.

They were just starting when I was at high school. There was me, jumping about to The Sex Pistols and The Clash and (Big Country :shifty: ), surrounded by arseholes with streaks and Charlie Nicholas mullets, listening to U2 and Simple Minds. :x

1982. The Clash had just released Should I stay or Should I go/Straight to Hell and Combat Rock.

Yeah, I bought all my records from the psychedelic section of Eastern Bloc Records which was owned by 808 State. I think they sold it to Pete Waterman.

And then there was "Gunchester". Great times!

I never wore those baggy jeans though, my legs were too skinny.

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

I've always liked them and found enough merit in their older stuff. Saw them live in 2005 and it was stupendous. Automatic for the people got a scary amount of playtime for me in my late teens early twenties.

Some of the gooseberry fool in here for a band who've made some great music and now made a mature and realistic assessment and decision of themselves is laughable. Makes me so angry i'll try not to breathe.

I think most people have really just said that they used to be good, but haven't been for years. Even you say it was the older stuff you liked.

They've never really been my kind of band, but I can see why others like them. They were excellent at what they did, and I've been told they put on one hell of a show. Not many bands can claim to have been together for 30 years, and even fewer can claim to have spilt in such an amicable and mature way.

Yes, but thats means gooseberry fool all, as Rock'n'roll should never be about being mature. That is incredibly unrock'n'roll

I saw them at T in the Park back in the mists of time (2003 or 2004?). I enjoyed their performance and have liked most of their music. I am not sure I have heard any new stuff from them in the last 5 years or so though, so have no idea if that is any good (am guessing not from this thread :D ).

The comparison with U2 is an interesting one.

Only comparison is, they've been going for similar about of time. U2 have a sort of self indulgent, pompous, air of wankery to them that REM have never had.

They are were a fantastic band. Absolutely collosal back-catalogue of incredible songs that have bridged a surprising range of styles.

Let Me In or Circus Envy from Monster, or Leave from New Adventures in Hi-Fi, are examples of their breadth and scope. Country Feedback, At My Most Beautiful, Imitation of Life, amongst the obvious bigger songs, are simply proof of some of the best songwriting of the past 25 ish years.

I can't say I've got into any of their stuff since Reveal in 2001, but if nothing else, their split is going to draw me back in to listen to a load of their old stuff for a few days.

Shiny Happy People is their best song, though. And it's nice that Michael Stipe's dad let him borrow his hot back-up singer to perform on that track. it really gave them a leg-up and got his career going.

Dads are great.

Both Bands are fantastic. No Line on the Horizon was a good album.
