This may be the mystery behind why it keeps breaking down. Are you overloading it?

Might be on to something here. Do a cycle with a fairly light load and see if any problems arise.

That may be the case but as far as I know my mum and myself are very careful not to overload it. We never fill it more than two thirds because we know it's dodgy.

Cheers for the maintenance recommendation, I'll see if we can afford that. :)

As an aside I'd say the weight of the load might be worth looking into as well as how much you're throwing in there.

Hmm we do wash a lot of heavy clothes like jeans and other denim. Maybe that adds a lot to the weight. Or maybe on just a few occassions my mum has washed something like carpets which are very heavy indeed.

There might be your problem then. Try doing a small load of stuff that's not going to get heavy when wet, socks; undies that kind of thing.

If you've over-loaded it you are lucky it works at all - if something like the bearings go (depending on the model) it might not be economical to repair. So when it is fixed, take it easy!

We just had our hotpoint machine break down a few weeks back. Similar to yours it wouldn;t spin and stopped mid way through. Had a look around John Lewis, Curries, Comet etc. Eventually we called out the local plumber, he managed to get the bottom bit of the machine off and pulled a load of leftover crap (mainly hardened powder) out which had built up over time. He charged £40 and now it's good as new. He did mention the brushes will need replacing soonish.

I'd recommend either calling out a reliable plumber or visiting your local boot fair for one. You can pick them up for as little as £50 there. If you're looking for a new machine to last you several years then you need to look at Miele which is the best make going at the moment.

You're all the wiser after the event!

Yo

Looking at this machine now:

http://www.johnlewis.com/230482272/Product.aspx

We can't be bothered to fix and keep having an unreliable machine in the long term (crappy Hotpoint) and rental looks very expensive in long term.

Zanussi = Tricity Bendix apparently, all made by Electrolux Group so sort of the same company.

Reviews are really really good here: http://www.reevoo.com/reviews/mpn/zanus ... iew_382002

£419 from John Lewis with free delivery, 2 year guarantee and £9 charge to dispose of old machine properly. We hope John Lewis' excelellent customer service reputation will make the guarantee mean something!!

Any potential pitfals guys? Cheers. Especially thanks to Carlos for the brand recommendations, narrows things down a lot.
