PostRecommended HDrive upgrade for PS3 and the best guide

Ok folks, another query.... ;)

My 80gb fat PS3 is full to max, i've binned all my demos, have no music/videos/pics on and i've binned all game saves/updates for games I no longer have.
What with all the forced installs, updates etc. I need to upgrade my storage space.

I don't want to spend anymore than £50. I *think* 160GB should be enough (but then I thought 80GB was huge when I first bought the machine :| )
There's plenty of choice I see on Amazon and customer reviews, but what do u guys recommend? Who's done it, and did everything go to plan?

I've got a 4gb micro SD card (to use with a USB adapter) to backup my saves. Can I copy installed data to this as well?
Does my profile reside on the HD or will I need to recover my profile online? Does trophy info stay the same etc etc.
I got inFamous free after the PSN hack and Little Big Planet with my US account - what will happen to these? Are they still available on the store? If I can't get them back that will effectively be the same as binning them on my current HD and getting 10GB back, so I wouldn't bother to change the HD :fp:

Finally any guide recommendations. I believe it is an easy process but I want to cross my t's and dot my i's so to speak

Thanks folks

I bought one of these

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002YZDV5A

It was only £35 when I got it in May, no idea why it's jumped in price now? There's other 320gb drives there for under £50 though, so you'll have plenty of space.

I backed my 40gb PS3 (just about full) to my iPod classic - I didn't realise this could be done, so it saved a lot of time! Changing the drive is stupidly easy, I set out, had my screwdriver, and a 15 min instructional video. The guy yacked away for about 14 mins, undid the screw, slid out the drive, then slid in the new one and screwed the flap back. It's stupidly easy, but no harm in being cautious.

Turned it back on, signed in and reinstalled from the back up, synced everything up, job done.

I think there's a download/purchase history in the PSN store in Account options, so you should be able to get games back, although I'd double check on Free post hack games. Everything I copied across worked as before no problem.

That's my experience, no idea if it helps you, but hopefully there's something in there :)

And I bought this one, which has gone up by £15 since buying it..

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-500GB-Cache-5400RPM-Internal/dp/B002842SRY/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1320311337&sr=1-1

Worth paying that bit extra, you really wouldn't need more than 500GB.

Sync your trophies before doing it. Back up your saves. You can do a complete back up but you will have to delete your downloaded games (iNfamous etc) unless you have something big enough to store them on, you then get them back by going to the Store and top right should be the option for Purchase History.

Make sure you get the correct size screwdriver or you'll tear the heads off them.

Wait. Aforementioned floods in Thailand has forced hard drive prices up noticeably, and so if you wait a few months you'll probably save yourself a noticeably amount of money.
