PostPersona 3 (Playstation 2)
by Seven » Sun Aug 17, 2008 9:53 pm

Well, I bought a copy off Ebay seller's store for only £20, brand new & sealed of this from eBay. Personally, the story of it sounds interesting, although there seems be no subtitles in FMVs/cut-scenes. Blah.

Oh well, I know this game is out for while, but what's everyone's opinions on this game? I've (pirated) played Persona 1st, which is pretty fun, although FPS dungeon crawling and ridiciously high enemy encounter chance is annoying me off...>_> Although having seen Persona 3 it seems free-roaming instead of FPS view Dungeon Crawling, which is only good thing. And I like the battle system so far.

Also, is there any news of Persona 4 or even re-port of Persona 1&2 for PSP or PSN?

The FES version of Persona 3 is out here in October, nothing on 4 yet though (I'm not even sure if it has been confirmed for the UK).

That's the one I'm getting and it'll be my first introduction to the series.

I don't know FES version is going to come out here! I assume it's only for JAP/US thing.
Och well, I'll be playing Persona 3 now, rather than waiting till October for it. That and it only cost me £20, so...

Good price too.

Gotta order from there when it comes out, then.

Anyway, Persona 3 arrived today. So far, it's basically weird gooseberry fool. But brilliant, I love the battle system - turn based with some things making it different. And story's pretty interesting as well.

Must play moar.

Just started playing this on PSP. Less than two hours in, I'm enjoying it so far. I like how the gameplay isn't just combat focused, there seems to be quite a lot to do while outside of dungeons.

Did well in midterms. 8-)

Did you ever finish this Seven? Wondering how long it is.

Depending on what difficulty level you're playing on and how much you care about social links, I'd say easily over 60+ hours. Probably closer to 80.

The game ends proper in around December/January.

I put about 6 hours into this before giving up for a couple of reasons, one was the fact I didn't know what I doing & the other was the characters getting tired mechanic when exploring the main dungeon.

I found Persona 4 a much more friendly game. Put around 90 hrs into that

You can definitely see where P4 improves upon it but by no means is P3 a bad game. There's still some good characters and a decent story.

The tiredness mechanic does definitely get irritating though but it's kinda equivalent to the mp mechanic of P4 where it doesn't recover until you leave the TV world.

I got 3 FES a year or so ago and I just can't get into it. I played 4 first and as plaido says, it's a much friendlier game to get into.

Persona 4! There aren't enough  smilies in the world.

I reckon the SP mechanic was a lot less annoying than getting tired (although I didn't play 3 anywhere near as much as I played 4, and I played 4 first...). I'm liking that it's been toned down in P3P.

Nah, I pretty much gave up :( Kept getting dying just floor below bosses, I did like it though but I wish I'd put it on Easy instead  I'll be reattempting it sometime in future due to me having FES version sealed.

The tiredness mechanic does become less of an issue as your characters level up, so you're able to spend longer in the dungeon before your characters start to actually get tired.
I've almost completed P4 and really should go back and have another crack at P3 FES....I did get a fair chunk in and then stopped playing for one reason or another.

I agree that P4 does have just the right tweaks to improve the formula though, especially with being able to control the actions of my entire party.

Still, even though the PSP version does apparently make some improvements, I would still recommend the PS2 version over it. I hear the PSP version has removed all of the anime cut scenes in favour of still shots, which would rather annoy me. The free movement around the world has also been removed in favour of little more than a menu system I believe. The only thing the PSP version does better is adopt the P4 battle system.

To be fair, the way you navigate the world in P3P works pretty well. It's playing to the constraints of being on a portable system. And yes, it does remove all the anime cutscenes and replaces them with stills, but that comes down to personal taste. I don't mind it, it kind of reminds me a little of Fire Emblem I suppose. Also, you can choose the gender of the main character, changing the flow of the story a little and giving you different social links.

Jesus.

I'm only about 7 hours in. I've been playing on Normal. I haven't had any real difficulty problems yet. Hopefully it says that way.

Wellll...

From the difference I saw in playing P3 on Easy then P4 on normal, the major difference is that you're just going to have to grind a lot more whenever you hit a sub boss/main boss.

Personally I'd say if you're averse to having to grind for levels you may want to consider restarting while it's "only" 7 hours.

Then again, this is from the man who abandoned a 50 hour P3 save since I'd forgotten the majority of the plot when I went back to it.
