Writer and expert on authoritarian regimes Sarah Kendzior appeared on MSNBC Thursday and blasted Republicans for their submissiveness to President Donald Trump.

She and host Joy Reid discussed the bizarre turn-around of Sen. Lindsey Graham who went from calling Trump a “kook” to attacking the media for trying to “label the guy some kind of kook not fit to be president.”

The uncomfortably effusive praise of Trump by Vice President Mike Pence and members of the cabinet, as well as an unctuous speech by long-serving Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) led Kendzior to speculate that Trump might even be blackmailing some officials.

“The RNC was hacked,” Kendzior said. “We don’t know what happened with those e-mails. We know that Lindsey Graham’s personal e-mails were also hacked and we know that Trump has a long track record of blackmailing and threatening those who he sees as his political opponents. That goes back throughout his entire career.”

Kendzior reminded Reid that many Republicans benefitted in 2016 from millions of dollars of dark money donated by Kremlin-aligned Russian nationals living in the U.S. and that Graham is one of those politicians.

“I think what concerns me most is that they seem afraid,” she said of the Republicans gathered to heap compliments on Trump this week. “They seem unable to stand up for themselves. They lack all dignity.”

“Trump has berated them, he has insulted them,” Kendzior said. “He’s often gone after their wives and their family members, saying terrible things and yet they prostrate themselves to him. What kind of leader are you? What kind of man are you?”

Rumors have long swirled about the never-married Graham’s sexual orientation. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee insinuated earlier this year that he has concerns about Graham’s sexuality.

When the South Carolina senator was proving to be insufficiently loyal to Trump in March, Huckabee said, “I sometimes wonder what uniform he puts on each morning when goes out to the field to play… and I’m not just talking about the partisan uniform.”

I would have to question if further destabilising the region and losing another Muslim ally really makes perfect sense. May be to Trump of course, but that might not be the best yardstick to use.

Pakistan aren't a real ally. Neither are Saudi Arabia. It's because they have nukes and oil that they are of importance. They provide safe havens to Bin Laden and state sponsored violence.

In isolation what he says about Pakistan is absolutely true and I'm amazed the West has kept so quiet for so long.

Of course when you look at the wider picture and the other states the US snuggles up with, its just more empty hypocrisy.

The Pakistan situation is way more complicated than you two are making out. While part of the country is pretty hardcore against the west and it's values large chunks are legitimatize on our side and just want to modernize their country.

Trump has gone and called Kim Jong-un "Rocket Man" again. It's astonishing, this gooseberry fool.

Maybe Trumps idea is to start WW3 so he ends up being the last President of the United States and thus totally unforgettable by the few global survivors.

It really is amazing to see just how far US politics has fallen.
From the heady days of Kennedy enthralling the world with his speeches about going to the moon to today and Trump who can barely go more than a sentence or so without sticking his foot in his mouth and tweets like an angry toddler.

The gist of what Trump says against the likes of ISIS, Iran, Syria, Pakistan, North Korea and so on is correct, it's the way he goes about it, and with obviously only a fleeting understanding of the subject. He just barrels on in there like...A WRECKING BAAAAALLL. HASHTAG MILEY CYRUS.

He has no diplomacy skills, and seems to think he's capable of solving problems that have dogged these regions for many, many decades.

He also has a habit of conflating more than one issue, as was shown about a subject we do know about (rising crime in London and the UK). He'll take something factual and bolt on something else to get whatever agenda he's pushing out there.

He's a complete idiot, which wouldn't be so bad if he didn't believe he was a genius.
