I wonder if the former is on any curriculums in the US. I can imagine it would be a uncomfortable topic for numerous reasons.

I'm sure there's plenty of schools that would be actively against teaching it because reasons.

Oh, it gets taught.. sort of....

I seem to recall the Slave Triangle being taught in school, but I'd imagine in the States it would open a complete can of worms on the subject...

That textbook thing shows that the vastness of the country is part of the major issues, as half of it want one thing whilst a state next door might not...

I seem to recall Dan Carlin doing an interesting Common Sense episode on US text books. I think It boiled down to the larger states getting the say so basically down to numbers.

Theresa May on Trump comments: Far-right should always be condemned

The PM said: "I see no equivalence between those who propound fascist views and those who oppose them."

The UK prime minister added: "I think it is important for all those in positions of responsibility to condemn far-right views wherever we hear them."

Asked about Mr Trump's response to the incidents, Mrs May said: "As I made clear at the weekend following the horrendous scenes that we saw in Charlottesville, I absolutely abhor the racism, the hatred and the violence that we have seen portrayed by these groups.

"The United Kingdom has taken action to ban far-right groups here, we have proscribed certain far-right groups here in the United Kingdom.

"And there is no equivalence."

Two of Mrs May's ministers, Sajid Javid and Sam Gyimah, attacked his response in Tweets on Wednesday.

"The 'leader of the free world' loses moral authority when he cannot call fascism by its name," Mr Gyimah wrote.

And Scottish Conservatives leader Ruth Davidson tweeted: "The president of the United States has just turned his face to the world to defend Nazis, fascists and racists. For shame."

A number of Labour MPs have called on Mrs May's offer of a visit with state honours for Mr Trump to be withdrawn.

Shadow defence secretary Nia Griffith tweeted: "A state visit by Donald Trump would shame this country and betray all we stand for. Theresa May should revoke the invitation immediately."

Nottingham South MP Lilian Greenwood said Mr Trump's comments were "sickening" and a "new low".

Lib Dem leader Sir Vince Cable said it would be "completely wrong" for Mr Trump's state visit to the UK to go ahead.

"Donald Trump has shown he is unable to detach himself from the extreme right and racial supremacists," he added.

It was in his will. They weren't freed until a year after he died.

The Washington Post has a timeline of how things played out over the weekend in Charlottesville and who initiated what:

Joking aside, this Nazi march and Trumps 'fake news' and 'what about'isms has direct comparisons with the origins of Nazi Germany. Now I don't think it will ever get to that point but it's bizarre none the less.

Would they be the same sort of people that want to keep up Confederate statues because "you can't change history"?

Funny how a statue of an old Confederate is an important piece of history but schools should brush over the horror of what happened....

Trump would be correct in saying that there agitators on the left as well as the right, but the comparison is disingenuous and misleading on this occasion. Charlottesville was so, so clearly about one side - the strawberry floating Nazis (I hate these guys) - being the aggressor. Trump is correct when saying that there are decent people on both sides - doubtless there were a tiny minority of marchers who just wanted the statue to stay and were hoodwinked into joining the throng of Neo-Nazis - but his problem is where he ascribes moral equivalence to the motives and actions of both sides, which is ludicrous.

He seeks to lessen the importance of the Neo-Nazi actions while pathetically trying to amplify a tiny (and barely reported as violent on this occasion) element of anti-Nazi protest. Then he pretends there are 'more facts' about the events in Charlottesville that only he seems to know, but doesn't enlighten anyone on what these are. How convenient that this feeds into his fake news narrative. He's trying to convince his supporters that there is some untold story of Charlottesville that the likes of CNN won't tell you. It's pretty obvious that he's appeasing his base so that he doesn't lose even more support, but in doing that he's surely actually losing many of the more reasonable people who (stupidly) voted for him. He's also in the middle of a tug of war between written statements drafted by White House staffers, versus what he himself clearly thinks. I don't think we're in the endgame of his Presidency yet, though, because he still has the war card to play if things get too bad.

Depressing times in the States.

Normally I'd laugh at this desperate tweet, but I've now reached a point where I have to imagine him getting Kennedy'd to cheer myself up.

This is actually something I'm strawberry floating terrified of. Can you imagine if someone killed him? Can you imagine the furor and the rage from the right, not to mention the far-right? The GOP would have absolute authority to do whatever the strawberry float it wanted and it would completely erase the America we have known in our lifetimes.
