Something a bit funny about the number of viewers Fox News was getting in the UK. Sky are claiming a shocking average of 2,000 viewers. BARB on the other hand are putting it at just under 60,000. So either BARB are out by a very wide margin (a complaint some have levelled at how TV Ratings are calculated before) or Sky (who would actually know what channel the box is tuned in to) are lying.

Sky is far more accurate if Sky have access to the figures. I don't know if they do.

I guess the suggestion is that Sky think that getting rid of Fox will make their upcoming take over more likely.

I'm not sure why Sky would be stupid enough to completely fabricate a figure though, when a more vague statement would have sufficed. Worth noting how Sky News continues to lose money hand over fist as well (thus some of the budget cutting, some of it visible on-air).

My contacts in the Met are saying all leave around October time is being cancelled. Word is they suspect a surprise Trump visit.

In other news Trump apparently had a breakdown when his rally crowd wasn't big enough.

Donald Trump was in a bad mood before he emerged for a confrontational speech in Arizona last week.

TV and social media coverage showed that the site of his campaign rally, the Phoenix Convention Center, was less than full. Backstage, waiting in a room with a television monitor, Trump was displeased, one person familiar with the incident said: TV optics and crowd sizes are extremely important to the president.

As his surrogates warmed up the audience, the expanse of shiny concrete eventually filled in with cheering Trump fans. But it was too late for a longtime Trump aide, George Gigicos, the former White House director of advance who had organized the event as a contractor to the Republican National Committee. Trump later had his top security aide, Keith Schiller, inform Gigicos that he’d never manage a Trump rally again, according to three people familiar with the matter.

Working for Trump sounds like complete gooseberry fool.
He demands absolute loyalty but also the right to drop you with no warning and then treat you like scum.

That CNN video :(

Bet the reporter felt like a right piece of gooseberry fool, and rightly so. Still uncomfortable to watch though.

We seem to be skipping past how useless BARB actually are if they are off by a factor of 30.

BBC News wrote:A major dam outside Houston has begun spilling over as Storm Harvey pushes the reservoir past capacity, a Texas official says.

Engineers have tried to prevent nearby communities from being inundated by releasing some of the water held by the Addicks dam.

But flood control official Jeff Lindner says water levels are now over the height of the reservoir edge.

More rain on the way too.

They've known for decades that the defences were inadequate and that the area was due a hurricane. We actually had it as a case study in a level geography of an incoming disaster :fp:

But if a disaster is only overdue and the area isn't typically prone to them, even if defenses are woefully inadequate, lawmakers aren't going to see any need to do anything about it.

There is hope when it comes to the far right. They just have to go to jail first. ;)

BARB uses a similar method to the pollsters. BARB takes 5100 households and fits them with a meter, special remote control, and software for other devices (provided through Kantar Media). That information is supposed to get an accurate figure of what the country is watching. People often make the common mistake of thinking what they're viewing on a normal TV has any bearing on the rating, but it doesn't whatsoever.

Theoretically speaking, the viewership figures could be just as wrong as the opinion polls if those chosen to reflect the nation are wrong. Streaming and on-demand services in comparison are 100% accurate (unless they're lying, but then they'd also be lying to shareholders).

That won't happen in the numbers needed though - the US prison system is full of black people doing multiple years or decades of time each for low level offences, thanks to mandatory minimums pushed by racist politicians.

Did you think I was being 100% serious?

It’s a good story and it was nice to see somebody change their life and behaviour for the better. I am well aware that the majority will not change just because they played cribbage with a Jamaican though.

At the bottom of that story is a link to another story about a violent far right gay guy, that one is also worth reading, terrifying man but fascinating to read about.

The problem with the US is you have states where politicians will push for less and less coverage for disaster relief and upgrading infrastructure because they see it as wasteful government spending and the supporters they have love nothing more than claiming that any government spending is wasteful.
When you have a bunch of people who actively call government workers "Parasites on society and thieves and that tax is theft" it's rather hard to have much sympathy for them when they find out that the roads are all falling apart and because they stopped all funding for public transport there's zero alternative.

For those people places like London with good public transport that gets millions of people to work every day must seems like a communist hellscape.

I understand how BARB works, but it appears that they've just over estimated the viewing figures of Fox News by a factor of 30. I'm guessing it's to do with the method being imprecise with smaller channels, but there seems to be very little point in them continuing with their business
